“And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces
endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope
does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the
Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” - Roman 5:3-5
“We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called
according to his purpose.” - Romans 8:28
There aren’t many I people I know who could honestly say, like Paul, that they “boast in their suf-
ferings.” There aren’t many people I know who wouldn’t give their left arm to avoid suffering, if
that would be possible!
And yet, for all of us, pain, loss and suffering are an inevitable part of life.
Yes, we know (at least retrospectively) that most of the time, suffering does produce endurance
and character and hope, but it just seems that there could be a better way to develop those charac-
ter strengths than by suffering. Although our gut instinct may be to find a “quick fix” that will
immediately relieve any suffering we experience, that may not be the wisest way to deal with pain.
For example, the pain caused by a toothache effectively prevents pressure on the tooth which can
delay healing and potentially spread bacteria. The rapid elimination of pain may, in the long run,
actually contribute to greater pain!
Some people are actually born without any sensation of pain. But their pain-free life is not bliss.
People without the sensation of pain do not feel the discomfort of sitting in the same position for
long periods. Their blood supply is impaired. There is tissue damage. In fact, people who cannot
feel pain are nearly all dead by age thirty.¹
Reactions to pain – whether it’s physical, emotional or spiritual pain – such as avoidance, denial,
blaming, over-simplification or other “easy cures” are all ways of limiting the possibility of learn-
ing from pain. Although “quick fixes” may make pain appear to be gone, there’s a good chance
that it is not, and that it will continue to find ways to wreak havoc in one’s life.
On the other hand, when one recognizes, as Paul did, that pain and suffering are part and parcel of
life, one can respond thoughtfully, hopefully, and even creatively to the discomfort. Trusting in
“God’s love [which] has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit,” and the promise
that in all things God works for good, who knows what “new good” God may call forth in one’s
life?
Be God’s,
Pastor Bonnie

“Flours” is a collection of pantry items or a monetary donation of your discre-
tion to the Cluster. If a cash donation to the Cluster is made, a wheat arrange-
ment will be placed on the altar. Altar flowers are $30.00 and bulletin dedica-
tions are $6.50. Food Sculptures are also gladly accepted.
You can also dedicate a Choir Anthem with a donation of $30. With ever-
increasing costs of choral music, this sponsorship will help stretch our budget
and continue to bring quality music to Shenkel. Dedicate your anthem to some-
one special, an event in your life, or just to the fact that you love music. Thank
you for this needed contribution to Shenkel. Blue envelopes are in the Narthex
for your sponsorships.
The are many dates open for sponsorship and dedication during this and the
upcoming months. Please complete one of the special flower/bulletin/anthem
envelopes below the sign-up chart, enclose your payment, and either put it in
the collection plate or in the Secretary’s box by the office door. You should
sign your name on the chart in the narthex by the appropriate date after you
have completed your envelope.
Shenkel UCC celebrates the sacrament
of Holy Communion at both services on
the first Sunday of each month. Each
time communion is served, some of the
bread and non-alcoholic wine that has
been consecrated at the altar will be
saved in a traveling communion kit,
ready to go to the homes or hospital
rooms of members who were unable to
be present, and would like to receive the
sacrament. Please let Pastor Bonnie
know if you, or someone you know,
would appreciate “distance-communing”
with their Shenkel Church family!

ARE YOU A COMMITTEE OR A MINISTRY TEAM
CHAIRPERSON?
Something to think about…. believe it or not, the end of the
year is fast approaching, and your annual com-mittee report will be due at the church office no later than December 15th in order for the annual report to be completed on time. Ministry team coordinators are also welcome to submit a yearly update for the annual report. Please consider this suggestion for annual reports You can either just add bullets under these categories, or incor-porate these into a more narrative report --
-- accomplishments during 2012 -- concerns or questions that arose dur- ing the year
-- hopes and plans for 2013
Thank you.
DO YOU HAVE NEWS FOR
THE BULLETIN OR THE
NEWSLETTER?
Just a reminder that all bulletin
announcements should be at the church office by
each Tuesday at noon to be included in that week’s
bulletin. Newsletter articles must be submitted by
the 15th of each month to be included in the next
issue. Please remember that the December/
January edition is combined, so all information
about January events must also be at the church
office by November 15th.
SAVE-A-TAPE PROGRAM
This is the easiest way to help our church fi-
nancially. Just ask for a Save-A-Tape card at
the customer service spot at your local Red-
ner’s store. Show your card at the register
when you check out, then bring your register tapes to church
and deposit them in the box in the Narthex. These tapes are
collected routinely, presented to the store, and Redner’s do-
nates a percentage of your total purchase to the church.
Be careful to bring your tapes in regularly instead of saving
them at home, as they do expire if not redeemed within a
certain time period. Also, please return the entire register
tape. Redner’s will not accept any register receipt that has
any part of it removed.
Keep up the good work and thank you, Redner’s!

$175 Challenge You are probably aware that we are
behind in bringing in the funds
needed to pay the bills. We have re-
ceived a challenge to correct that situation. Pas-
tor Bonnie’s father has contributed $175 to our
budget, and has challenged us all to match that
amount. We appreciate his generosity, and
think we can follow his lead. We would like to at
least take action and ask that each of us make a
contribution as we are able. Containers will be
available in the near future as we launch this
campaign. In appreciation of our 175 years as a
church, we suggest that any amount from $1.75
to $175 to $1,750(or even $1,750,000☺) will
help the cause…and everyone who donates will
get a beautiful “175 Shenkel Church” button to
wear proudly.
TOTAL DONATED AS OF PRESS TIME —
$875!
A Veteran’s Day Oldies Spectacular
will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Pottstown Senior High School to benefit the Potts-town Cluster. More informa-tion on the event and reser-vation forms can be found on the flyers in the narthex
and social hall.
Tammy Graef is once again
working with Ministries on
Main Street, helping to
provide holiday meals for
the homeless.
If you can provide any help
with donations of non-
perishable food items, paper
products, and especially frozen
turkeys, please call Tammy at 610-469-
6085. All help is greatly appreciated!

Philadelphia. We’d like to take along items for their Cupboard – Most needed are socks, men’s un-derwear, t-shirts in all adult sizes, pop-top canned food like ravioli and soup, men’s shoes and boots, and men’s hoodies. Items can be given to any member of the confir-mation class, or dropped off at the church office. Thanks!

the month of November is
the All Saint’s Offering, which
benefits the Retired Clergy of
the PSEC. We are also receiving the Thanksgiving Of-
fering this month, which helps stock the North Coven-
try Food Pantry. Please be as generous as you can.
Thank you. The Pottstown Cluster will provide Christmas
holiday box meals to needy families in Potts-
town. This year they have an increase in
families needing groceries and they will
need to distribute 250 boxes. We have
agreed to provide 250 cans of corn as our do-
nation and we will hold this collection during
the month of November. Donated cans can be
placed on the chancel rail in the sanctu-
ary. Thank you for your contributions to this
worthy campaign.
Doing some early Christmas

tra hands. If you like to knit or crochet (or would
like to learn), please contact the church office at

STEWARD’S CORNER
Have we been having fun! I love this 175th anniversary celebration. It is so nice for
so many people getting together and enjoying each other and the activities. I enjoyed
having a “Birthday Party for Everybody.” The tables were so beautiful with the
"flowers of the month” decorating the table. That colorful lady, Mrs. Brown, is really
good at creating beautiful settings and atmosphere. And it was fun to watch the peo-
ple playing “Family Feud.” Bingo was also fun and very clever. It was not the usual
B I N G O…it was birthday words! And Linda Foss is “the party girl”…she knows how to make up fun
games for everyone to play and enjoy. We even had birthday cake at the end of the night, and then every-
one went home happy, and I went to my little corner and finished eating some crumbs from the cake .
Then October 14th was the day for the Time Capsule to be opened. Pastor Dan Moser was the guest
pastor that day, and that was good because he was the pastor here at Shenkel 25 years ago when that
capsule was filled and put in the ground for us to open on this anniversary. There were 11 items in that
capsule. and some of the people submitted a list of what they thought might be stored away in it. There
were some good ideas, but nobody got all 11 items.
If you thought you knew any of those “treasures,” here is the list, as printed in the November, 1987
Shenkel “Sharings and Concerns” newsletter:
“A time capsule was put together by the Youth Fellowship and buried immediately to the left of the front
steps of the church on October 18th, 1987. It contains photos of all the Sunday School Classes, a Sep-
tember Newsletter, a bulletin from Homer Royer’s ordination, and the Mercury article about him. Also
included were note cards, a mug, Book markers, and a tee shirt bearing our logo for our anniversary
year. An article from a West Chester newspaper covering our history, part of the Upper Junior class Sun-
day school lesson from September. and signature sheets with questions for the future from the adult
class, were packed in.
The capsule was provided by Tom Klein and Dick Klein will seal it with a concrete cover giving the date it
was buried and the date it should be opened. Susan Stultz was the instigator behind this project and we
should remember to thank her for it.”
Those articles are now on display on tables in the Social Hall. From this time to November 11th, we will
be gathering items for us to put in a time capsule for the next 25 years. The youth group worked ahead
and created a beautiful photo book as their contribution. You are invited to submit suggestions for what
we should put in the capsule to be opened at the 200th anniversary.
We still have more celebrating to come…a special anniversary pictorial directory. (If you have not put
your order in yet, just give $5 to Jody Sweinhart for your copy.) Also, we are anticipating an up-
dated Book of Shenkel’s History to be available for purchase in November. We will have the dedication
of our new choir robes on November 4th, and the finale celebration will take place on Sunday, November
11, with a memorable service, followed by a ham dinner with “pot-luck” items that you are invited
to contribute. Of course, there will be a special 175th anniversary birthday cake!
What a great celebration we’ve had, and what a great congregation we have, and what a
great church is Shenkel United Church of Christ (“The Little Country Church” that I
love!)
Gratefully,
STEWARD (The church mouse)
Tis the Season…. PAGE 10
Advent Devotional
A catch of the breath, a laugh of delight, a lifting of the heart, quiet tears… Have there been moments in
your life when God’s presence was so real it was absolutely unmistakable? Please consider sharing an
original story, poem, reflection or illustration that we may include in our 2012 Advent Devotional –
“Emmanuel – God With Us”. As we prepare to celebrate the coming of the
One who has promised to be with us always, our Advent season will be that
much richer as we share pieces of our faith journeys with each other.
Please contact Ann Baccari or the church office if you’d like to participate –
people of all ages are invited to contribute! All submissions must be re-
ceived in the church office by Sunday, November 4. Thank you!

Once again, Shenkel will sponsor a Giving Tree to
help make the holidays of those less fortunate a
bit merrier. The tree, which will be in the narthex
near the end of this month, will hold ornaments
that can be used to identify holiday gifts and toys
to be donated to Bethany Children's Home or to
the Pottstown Cluster Toy Drive.
Gift requests for the Cluster will be printed on the back of the
ornaments and a flyer with suggestions for Bethany Children’s
Home gifts will be available in the very near future. Please
help make the holiday special for these children by taking an
ornament and returning it to church, attached to an un-
wrapped toy or gift certificate. Watch the Sunday bulletins
for updated information. Deadline to receive gifts at the
church is December 9th. The Cluster will pick up the toys on
December 12th and the Confirmation Class will deliver the
gifts to Bethany Children’s Home on December 15th. If you
have any questions, please contact Carol Stubbe at 610-326-
5301 or see Pastor Bonnie.
Healing prayers are now be offered on the third
Sunday of each month at both services of worship.
Also, the third Thursday of each month is a time for prayer
and anointing, and also a time for reflection. We will be
meeting in the Agape Room from 9:15 till
10:00 AM. Anyone who is in need of
prayer or anointing is invited to come.
The Prayer Chain list is continually being
updated. Request for prayers should be
placed in the prayer box in the Narthex, or
get in touch with any member of the
Wholeness Committee. Prayer requests will be carried for
one month. If anyone is interested in ministering on the
Prayer Chain, please contact Ann Baccari or Freda Wan-
ner. Members of the Wholeness Committee are Ann Bac-
cari, Ted Gray, Tootie and Louise Hine, June Hartung,
Carol Stubbe and Freda Wanner.
The Chancel Choir is off to a running start! We jumped right in and have begun rehearsing music for
the Holidays, and on into the New Year. It was a joy for us to have, as our first time to sing, Pastor
Dan Moser who returned as part of the Anniversary Celebration on October 14th. Our very first an-
them was one of my favorite pieces, "Rain Down." The Choir did an amazing job with it! We pray
that, as you heard us sing, you did, indeed, feel God's love "raining down" upon you, and showering
you with many blessings!
We are excited about the Service of Dedication for the new Choir Gowns on November 4th; The special Anniversary Cele-
bration on November 11th and; the Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service is on November 18th.
Prior to being hired by Shenkel, I had already agreed to supply preach for a Lutheran colleague on November 25th. That
will fulfill my final outside obligation. I look forward to being with all of you each week thereafter.
The Chancel Choir is looking forward to presenting the Annual Christmas Cantata on December 16th. It is entitled,
"Jeweled Snow."
Several young people introduced themselves to me on my very first Sunday and asked if they might share their musical gifts
with us. I was very happy to learn of their desire to play and sing for us, and I know that you will be blessed by their sharings
with us.
Finally, I wanted to express my thanks to all of you for the opportunity to be here with you as, together, we praise God and
Christ! Please bear with me and John as we continue to get to know all of you. You can help us by telling
us your name (over and over)!
I pray that you are enjoying the beauty of this fall! May you and yours have a most blessed Thanksgiving!
In Christ's love,
Douglas Holder
