Shepherd’s Voice
January 2019
1
We plan to start taking photos starting in mid-January to begin building our new Photo Directory. Dixie Bridgewater has graciously agreed to take the pictures for us. We will be setting up a portrait area in HIS room where she can conveniently capture your individual or family photos either before or after services on Sundays. We will also be updating the address and phone information at that time. I look forward to seeing you in our new directory soon.

Happy New Year! While it hardly seems possible that another year is in the rearview mirror, it is indeed a fact. I’m quite sure that this past year held many victories as well as many challenges. If your life is anything like mine, it can seem like you’re on an intense roller coaster ride. Often we might feel like we didn’t even sign up for the trip but we’re on it anyway. Well, one thing is for sure, and that is that this year will have its share of ups and downs as well. I believe with all my heart that the same God who walked with us every step of the way during 2018 is the same God that will walk with us in the days and months that are ahead. I want to encourage you this year to be proactive as you encounter people in your life in need of hearing the Gospel message. We meet people on a daily basis in all walks of life who need Jesus, so why not listen to the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit as it leads up to the right person the right moment? Our lives find a great sense of satisfaction when we are helping others, and I believe the most significant help we can offer humanity is to declare God loves them! You don’t have to be a theologian to hear the good news. The best way you can share the gospel is to simply to let people know the difference Jesus has made in your life! I think you will be amazed at how receptive people are. And if they aren’t, move on and ask the Holy Spirit to open the next door. Kindness goes a long way in sharing the gospel. A person cannot be “argued into” a relationship with Christ. I know God will help all of us as we endeavor to live for God and to share our Faith in 2019. Again, happy new year!
Rev. Tweedy Navarrete

We know everyone has a hard time with changes and there are times it is hard to accept.
However, there are also times when change is really good for us and therefore, we need
to look forward to it and embrace the change. Having said that, here are the changes
that will begin in January of 2019 and what a time to begin the new changes in a new
year as we move forward.
Worship Team has met and this is what we will be doing.
We will go to no bulletins in our hands. However, there will be a bulletin in the pew
before you and all of the necessary words like Call to Worship/Prayers/
Benedictions will be on the screen at the front of the church.
We will continue to greet each other at the beginning of our worship time together
and it will be the Pastor that will bring us back into order for the worship time.
We will no longer announce birthdays and anniversaries. Although these are
important celebrations in our life, we will have a celebration Sunday on the fourth
Sunday of every month. We will ask all those persons celebrating birthdays and
anniversaries to stand. We will then take a moment to recognize you and sing
Happy Birthday to all who are celebrating that month. Unfortunately, there is no
song for Anniversaries but we will recognize those who are celebrating.
Finally, on the first Sunday of each month, during communion there will be a basket
or a bucket placed in front and as you move forward to receive communion we are
asking that you donate any and all loose funds in your pocket to the Helping Hand
Fund. All proceeds that are gathered will be put into our Helping Hand Fund. As
you well know the Helping Hand Fund is a fund that allows us to reach out to
those in need. People passing through needing gas or maybe their looking for a job.
People who need assistance with their utilities, persons needing assistance with
groceries. Whatever the need is, the Helping Hand Fund allows us to assist these
persons. (note: Now if you give to helping hand fund already, then this will be a
donation that is up and beyond what you already give.)
On January 13th of 2019 – There will be a Servant Training scheduled for anyone who
currently serves as or are wishing to serve as Liturgist, Communion Servant, Usher,
Tech, Greeter, etc. To better help navigate these changes. This will also help us to
compile a list of ALL who are willing to be tapped as a volunteer for these Vital Duties.
REMEMBER THOSE CHANGES
WE MENTIONED?
Well here they are!

A group of UMC congregations mostly in the west and northwest valley have enjoyed a monthly
combined youth activity - usually, but not always, on the 3rd Sunday - for about 3 years. Most of
these churches have small groups of youth, some with 2 or 3 teens. This combined youth
gathering has allowed us to participate in activities that we would not be able to do alone. We
have a mix of social and ministry events.
It's an open group, always subject to input and tweeking. Feel free to invite pastors or youth
leaders from any other UMCs in the north and west valley.

Children’s Sermon Help Needed!
Our church still needs one more volunteer to help with the
2019 children’s sermons. It would be once every other
month; only six times a year! Short holiday and Bible
sermon related themes from free
on-line children’s sermons sites are available to help you.
Never done it before? No problem!
Please prayerfully consider this ministry to the
youngest among us!
Contact Suzanne Shaw for more information.

Storage Unit Auction
Ever watch “Storage Wars” on TV? Ever want to participate?
There are ongoing storage unit live auctions at Dollar Storage,
4170 W Peoria Ave, Phoenix.
At least One unit will be a fundraiser unit to assist with various
worthy causes and individuals throughout the valley. Item
donations for these special units are always welcome. Check in
with the storage office for item donations and Auction details.
Here’s how the auction works. Registration is at 8:30 am and
requires a $50 CASH deposit (returned to you if you don’t have
a successful unit bid). All bids are cash only, no cards, so you
must bring cash. Each unit is opened one at a time so you can
see inside. You can’t enter or rummage; just a plain view look!
The bidding begins, and the highest bidder gets everything in
the unit. If mystery sales appeal to you, attend!
This Dollar Storage provides a free storage unit for our church
which has allowed us to have our rummage sales. Be sure to
thank them if you attend any of the auctions!
