Location HighlightsDallas delivers all the excitement and conveniences of a big city, but without the big city hassles. Whether you’re a history buff, an architect-aficionado, a foodie, an art lover, a sports fan, a cowboy at heart, or love to shop-til-you-drop, Dallas has something for everyone.

Located in the northwest corridor of Downtown Dallas, the West End Historic District is where you’ll find attractions like The Sixth Floor Museum at the Dealey Plaza – the site of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination and one of the most visited spots in Downtown Dallas. West End is also where you will find authentic shops like Wild Bill’s Western Store, while the several blocks of rehabbed brick warehouses host a selection of restaurants and bars. Here you will find one of the top-rated Texas steakhouses, the famous Palm Restaurant, known also for its traditional Italian fare.

Due north is the 68-acre, 19-block Dallas Arts District, the largest contiguous urban arts district in the nation, boasts world-class museums, theaters and other venues hosting star-studded performances in music, dance, theater and more. Have a moment of serenity among celebrated sculpture at the Nasher Sculpture Center, or admire art for free at the Dallas Museum of Art or Crow

Collection of Asian Art. From performing arts at the AT&T Performance Arts Center, striking beauty in sight and sound at the Winspear Opera House or a magnificent performance from Dallas Black Dance Theater, there’s no shortage of visual and performing arts to enjoy.

Klyde Warren Park, a 5.2-acre urban green space in the middle of the bustling downtown district is the perfect place to enjoy the nearly year-round warm weather. Try one of the rotating food trucks, stop by for a custom cocktail at Savor Gastropub, or on the other side of the park is Stampede 66, an ideal place to taste a haute-creative version of Texas cuisine.

You can also see Dallas from a bird’s eye view at Reunion Tower GeO-Deck. The observation deck – 460 feet in the sky – includes an outdoor walkway and Halo, a hands-on digital screen system that gives you the inside scoop on Dallas’ most famous landmarks and events.

2017 Tellepsen ChallengePHOENIX UBELONG PLANNING COMMITTEE

Phoenix Society provides a supportive community empowering everyone affected by a burn injury to live the fullest life possible. Since 1977, we have championed the needs of burn survivors and their families as the only national organization providing the support and resources needed to thrive again.

While we offer many programs and resources, Phoenix World Burn Congress is our largest program. It brings together nearly 1,000 burn survivors, their families, medical professionals, and fire service for educational programming, training, support groups and resources each year. We look forward to having you join us in Dallas!

To support our vision, the Phoenix Society kicked off our Never Alone capacity campaign. We have set an ambitious goal of raising $6 million by the end of 2017, specifically to support those strategic initiatives that will enable us to make our vision a reality and serve more survivors than ever before. We are grateful to these initial donors of the Never Alone Capacity Campaign—partners whose generosity honors our history and supports our vision of tomorrow:

Phoenix donor and burn survivor, Howard Tellepsen, has established the 2017 Tellepsen Challenge to double the impact of gifts made to the Phoenix Society in 2017. All annual charitable gifts up to $10,000 made in 2017 will be matched.

Contact Rachel Webster, Annual Development Manager, at (800) 888-2876 or email at [email protected] with any questions.

FEATURED SPEAKERS & PRESENTATIONSBEYOND THE BURNSMANNY GONZALEZ, USMC (RET)

DO IT WELL. MAKE IT FUN. THE KEY TO SUCCESS IN LIFE, DEATH, AND ALMOST EVERYTHING IN BETWEENRON CULBERSON, MSW, CSP, CPAE

STRESS AND HEALING: AN UNLIKELY PARTNERSHIP KAREN COLLIGAN

Growing up, he always knew he wanted to follow in his father and grandfather’s footsteps and serve our Nation. As a United States Marine, Manny Gonzalez was fulfilling that dream. On July 18, 1996, that all changed. A combat exercise went horribly wrong when a fire broke out from training grenades used to simulate chemical warfare. After a failed attempt to fight the fire, chaos ensued as everyone ran to safety. Manny saw there was a Marine down and went into the line of fire, forever changing his life, and saving another.

Manny’s struggle went beyond just surviving the burns. Medically retired at the young age of 22, he struggled to find his place in the world around him. His story is of perseverance and strength of mind, tackling the challenges of young adulthood, in addition to discovering his identity as a burn survivor. He has opened up about his experiences with various audiences to demonstrate that one’s tragedy does not mean you cannot go on living. The courage to be himself above all else found him true love and a family he never imagined possible. Manny’s story is not just of being a burn survivor, but of living a life beyond the burns.

Do it Well, Make it Fun. is about personal and professional development. This hilarious presentation shows attendees how excellence combined with fun and humor can decrease stress, improve relationships, and lead to a successful work experience and more fulfilling life.

With a master’s degree in social work, Ron Culberson spent the first part of his career working in a large hospice organization as a clinical social worker, middle manager, and senior leader. As a speaker, humorist, and author of Do it Well. Make it Fun. The Key to Success in Life, Death, and Almost Everything in Between, his mission is to change the workplace culture so that organizations are more productive and staff are more content. He was the 2012-2013 president of the National Speakers Association and is a recognized expert on the benefits of humor and laughter.

Let’s face it, we all experience stress. Especially in the aftermath of a traumatic event. When stressed, most of us try to either manage it, deny it, overcome it or just live with it. But here’s a thought. What if, instead, we learn to USE that stress to motivate healing and to find a way forward?

Karen Colligan, who suffered burn injuries at the age of two, will share about the different types of stress, and how by increasing self-awareness of our stress triggers and behaviors we can use stress to our benefit.  She’ll explain how, based on our personality, stress may impact us differently, and will provide actionable ideas that you can implement immediately to embrace stress and accelerate your journey toward healing.

Karen is a recognized expert in leadership, team effectiveness and organizational development. She is founder and principal of PeopleThink, an organizational development firm, and author of The Get Real Guide to Your Career, and The AdviseHERy Board. Karen’s work centers around helping people discover their true potential and turn possibilities into reality. Karen earned her BS in Organizational Behavior from the University of San Francisco.

PASSION BUILDS PARTHENONS: HOW TO BUILD CONNECTIONS THAT LAST!ELLIOTT KRONENFELD, LICSW, CST

We never know what life experience will bring us to a deeper understanding of the journey we are on and how our relationships are impacted. Elliott found his awakening half way around the world. Under the Aegean sun, Elliott had a transformational experience that set him on a path of change that has driven personal, professional and spiritual development. This experience created a deep understanding of relationship based in curiosity and has fueled an intentional drive to create something long lasting... something with real meaning. Elliott has taken this transformation and used it to look at how to incorporate passion, intention and curiosity in relationships and connections.

By attending this presentation, listeners will be encouraged tap into their personal passion and take an assessment of their relationship goals and how they would like to connect to with others. Participants will learn the importance of curiosity and intention as strategic relationship tools.

Elliott comes to his work as a clinical social worker and certified sex therapist with a passion to help others find their long-lasting happiness. Based on his training as a practitioner of the 4-Dimensional approach to sex and intimacy, He takes a holistic approach to the human experience. Elliott is the founder of Insight Brookline Psychotherapy—one of Boston’s largest psychotherapy practices, and the cofounder of Colibri Integrative Group —a training and education group for clinicians. His new book Couples by Intention: Creating and Growing Intimacy is due out this year.

The workshop will be drawing from the work of The Daring Way™, the curriculum developed by Dr. Brené Brown created with the primary focus on developing shame resilience skills and a courage practice of wholehearted living that transforms the way we live, love, parent, and lead. We will discuss ideas about the courage it takes to engage in the tough arenas of life. We all experience challenges whether in our life and in our relationships. This workshop will explore how to bravely enter the arena with courage, compassion and connection. The workshop will be led by Dianne Morris Jones, a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator-Consultant, therapist and author of Stop Breathe Believe, Mindful Living One Thought at a Time and I’m Fine, a real feelings journal.

This power-packed workshop provides the “tools” for survivors and families to get back to living after a burn injury. It enables YOU to successfully feel comfortable and confident in any social, work, or school setting. You will learn common sense, specific, and smart ways to confidently manage stares, startled glances, abrupt questions, and whispers from three burn survivors who use these tools in their daily lives. This workshop is designed for survivors, family, friends, and burn care professionals. Everyone leaves with crucial, easy-to-use tools to build REAL social control, social comfort, and social competence!

RESEARCH, ADVOCACY, AND THE PHOENIX SOCIETYMODERATED BY: AMY ACTON RN, BSN AND RADHA HOLAVANAHALLI, PHD PANELISTS TO INCLUDE: CRAIG CRANDALL, PHD; PHALA HELM, PHD; LEWIS KAZIS, PHD; CATE MILLER, PHD; AND STEPHEN T. WEGENER, PHD, ABPP

What are the impacts of life after burn injury? What are the best supports and resources, and how can we continue to improve these? Join Moderators Amy Acton and Dr. Radha along with a team of experts as we review key milestones in the trends of burn care, research, and advocacy—and help shape the future.

This session will include what we have learned from recent advocacy and research efforts supported by Phoenix Society members on living with a burn, including: the life impacts of burn injury, social reintegration, physical impacts of injury including temperature regulation for burn survivors’ active living and exercise, chronic pain and itching- along with other long-term outcomes. We’ll discuss goals of government funding and advocacy to inform current practice and future research.

So what’s next? Help us shape the future of thriving after burn injury!

We ask that you kindly commit to all portions of the workshop:• Wednesday 8:45-5:00pm (includes

offsite trip, must be present for entire time)

• Thursday 5:15-6:30pm Support Group• Friday 2-3:30pm Discussion Group• Saturday 10-11am Workshop closing

activity (informal meetups will be arranged for general sessions, meals, etc., too!)

Do you have a story the world needs to hear? Have you tried to write it but felt stuck in the process? This interactive workshop provides seven “steps” for survivors to develop their personal story.  It will enable YOU to successfully make sure your story is clear to you.  This will allow you to give your future reading audience a chance to learn. Participants will also learn critical fundamentals for developing a story such as what part of your story should you share, where you should start, who your audience is, and much more.

This workshop is designed for survivors, family, friends, and burn care professionals. A personal story comes from the heart and speaks to the heart. Participants will leave with clarity and creative tools to craft their personal story. Everyone has a story to tell and that story will sell!

What’s trapping you? Preventing you from moving beyond your current setting?

Do you know how to find the answers within yourself?

As a young adult there can be many challenges, obstacles, and locked doors that can seem to be in your way. Join us for the Young Adult Workshop as we explore Dallas, Texas and work together as we find the clues to unlocking our own wisdom within ourselves.

In this combination of friendship and self-exploration experiences, we’ll realign our thought patterns and identify helpful resources and strengths to make our own vision and journey work together. We will be challenging our participants to work as a group during our visit to one of Dallas’ challenging Escape Rooms, and see if we can identify the clues as a team.

Alternate routes and doors can be found if you can see what’s inside you and those around you. Join us to better understand the power of the young adult community as we see what we can be.

PHOENIX UBELONG YOUTH AND TEEN: We welcome 7 to 17-year-old burn survivors, siblings and children of survivors to participate in

the Phoenix UBelong Youth and Teen Program. This purposefully structured, three-day program runs concurrently to the general Congress and offers an age-appropriate, supportive atmosphere for youth and teens.

UBELONG YOUTH AND TEEN PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:Our program theme this year is “Rising Up”, where we will encourage and guide each group to

explore self-advocacy, team building, and community interaction. • Youth and Teen Tracks – The program is divided into two tracks: the youth track (ages 7-12)

and the teen track (ages 13-17). Within each track, participants will be divided into smaller groups with other attendees their age to learn reintegration skills such as addressing stares, answering questions, dealing with bullying/teasing, and also discuss common concerns relative to their age. Our teen track participants will have a special focus on leadership, mentorship and service to others.

• Large group connections – Thursday and Friday we will begin our day as a large group participating in Zumba. We will also have the opportunity to develop a “code of living” as a group, intended to foster feelings of safety and support within the program. Our time together in the large group will provide a sense of community, connection, mentorship, and therapeutic expression.

• Special activities – Our main focus of this year’s sessions will be on team building, which is a simple but important skill that we use throughout our lives! Being able to collaborate as a team member encourages us to raise our voices to express our ideas, helps us consider multiple perspectives, allows us to experiment with leadership roles, and urges us to support others as they develop these skills. The youth track will work on these skills on site with a special visiting group and the teen track will go off site to “Group Dynamix” (http://groupdynamix.com/) experience their teambuilding abilities.

• Mentorship – An annual, favorite activity of our oldest two teen groups is receiving a visit from UBelong Young Adult program participants who share stories of healing and “growing up” and then accompany our 16 and 17 year old’s to open mic.

Requirements for the Phoenix UBelong Youth and Teen Program:• To be eligible to attend, children must be between the ages of 7-17 at the beginning of the Fall

2017 school year, and must have either personally experienced a burn injury, or have been affected by a burn injury of a member of their immediate family.

• Parents or guardians are required to be registered for Phoenix World Burn Congress and to sign their child in and out of the Phoenix UBelong program each day using a photo ID. UBelong Youth and Teen runs from morning until afternoon; parents will be given designated pick up and drop off times specific to each day of the program.

• To allow for the best experience, we ask that you commit your child’s participation each day and for the full program length. Age-appropriate lunch and snacks are provided to participants daily.

To get the most out of these experiences, participants must:• Be able to withstand 5-7 hours of programming that involve some periods of physical activity• Be able to adjust to new people, new places, and new things• Have the ability to separate from parents for several hours• Be able to follow directions from program staff• Be able to cooperate with other participants in his or her age group

HOW TO SIGN UPPre-register each child individually on the Phoenix WBC registration form – regular registration

fees apply. A Phoenix Society representative with contact you to confirm your child’s registration; additional registration forms will be required. Space is limited, please register in advance.
