TASTE BUDS

The Shoalhaven wine-growing region stretches south to Durras with 20 vineyards and 11 cellar

doors to choose from. With its high summer rainfall, humidity and sea breezes, the region’s

favourite grape is chambourcin and other popular varieties produced here include chardonnay,

verdelho, sauvignon blanc, semillon, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz.

Alexander Berry planted the region’s first grapevines at Coolangatta Estate in the 1820s and

during the 1870s, Silos Estate vines were established. Both these estates have restored their early

buildings, which add a strong character to their cellar doors and tasting rooms.

The first serious viticulture in the region commenced back in the 1980s with Coolangatta Estate,

followed by Jasper Valley Wines and Silos Estate. Cambewarra Estate vines were planted in the

early 1990s. Later new cellar doors were opened at Two Figs, Mountain Ridge Wines, Kladis

Estate, Cupitt’s, Nowra Hill Vineyard, Bawley Vale and Yarrawa Estate. Salet Wines at Currarong,

identified by the French term – garagiste – produces boutique wines from handpicked fruit, using

traditional methods.

Each June long weekend, the Shoalhaven Coast Wine Festival offers visitors three days of fine wine

and food. Cellar doors host various events from wine and cheese tastings, dinners, vineyard tours,

winery talks, themed lunches, produce and market stalls and live entertainment in the vineyards.

They say a good (and fun) way to get a real feel for a region is to taste the wines it produces. And fortunately we have superb drops on offer.

visit to the Treat Factory is a must!

The Jindyandy Shops at Pyree offer a delicious café, restaurant, specialty shops, as well as a

beauty retreat. Everyone will love the lolly store, and the sweets on offer will bring back great

childhood memories.

To the south, with a fantastic range of boutique stores, Milton has a vibrant and unique town centre

reflecting the passionate locals who reside there. Art galleries, specialty stores and the renowned

Pilgrim’s Café all combine to give you a great day out in this friendly town.

Nowra and Ulladulla feature the larger shopping centres and malls so you will never have to leave

town to find what you need.

Whether you’re on the lookout for a forgotten gem tucked away in an op shop, or just love to

uncover quirky fashion items, the Shoalhaven has a host of second-hand outlets to trawl through.

You never know what you might discover in a local charity store, and if you’re looking out for a

good read while you’re kicking back on the coast, check out one of our excellent new and used

book stores.

you can book an indulgent tour to uncover the gourmet secrets of the region.

Here on the South Coast, we’re known for our seafood, and lovers of the ocean’s bounty will not

Arthur Boyd is known for his many works that featured the beauty of the Shoalhaven River and,

today, this much- loved waterway continues to inspire artists, craftspeople, musicians, performers

and writers.

The city is blessed with art galleries, museums and organisations dedicated to showcasing visual

arts and enriching the sense of community. The Bundanon and Riversdale properties, Arthur

and Yvonne Boyd’s gift to the Australian people, offer educational and entertainment events

combined with a strong artist- in-residence program to foster creativity in the local community as

well as nationally and internationally.

For more than ten years, the Shoalhaven City Arts Centre and Regional Gallery, has attracted

exhibitions from renowned Australian and international artists while showcasing works from the

best of the region’s artists. The Centre has hosted poetry and music performances and continues

to develop strong bonds with the community.

Other significant museums are the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum at Huskisson, Meroogal in Nowra

and the Fleet Air Arm Museum at HMAS Albatross. These major galleries and museums, combined

with a host of private and commercial galleries showing contemporary arts, ceramics, timber and

other crafts, ensure the City of Shoalhaven is more than an idyllic natural environment, but also

an important and vibrant cultural destination. See the Service Directory in the back section of this

guide for a full list of museums and galleries.

A diverse community of artists respond in many ways to the landscape of the Shoalhaven, creating traditional and contemporary works that reflect the true spirit of the city.

Over 20,000 years ago, Indigenous people inhabited the Shoalhaven region. It was not until 1822 that European settlement began, with Alexander Berry taking up a land grant on the Shoalhaven River at Coolangatta.

Indigenous people lived in the Shoalhaven region around

20,000 years ago when the coastline stretched 20 km

further east. With the melting of ice, sea levels rose and all

evidence of habitation was buried under sand and sea.

The present shoreline has been in place for the past

6000 years and many archaeological sites have

survived, giving historians rich evidence of the lives of

these people.

Although the Indigenous people encountered

Europeans from time to time, for instance shipwreck

survivors, timber getters and whalers, it was not until

1822, when Alexander Berry took up a land grant, that

serious European settlement occurred. Berry settled

permanently at Coolangatta on the north bank of the

Shoalhaven River.

By the 1830s, the Indigenous population had been

severely reduced by disease and loss of land use.

People were relocated to reserves such as Roseby Park

at Orient Point and Bilong at Myola.

Around 1914, groups of Indigenous fisherman settled at

Wreck Bay, south of Jervis Bay. The area was gazetted

as an Aboriginal Reserve in 1952, with the the Wreck

Bay Community granted land rights over an area of

403 hectares in 1986. Today there are about 50 families

resident at Wreck Bay who are descended from or

related to the original settlers.

In the early days, Shoalhaven was noted for its timber,

which supplied sleepers for the early railways and

red cedar for fine furniture. Wool and wheat, as well

as fresh vegetables and fruit were shipped to Sydney

from Jervis Bay Harbour. Goods were hauled from as

far away as the Southern Highlands, and Jervis Bay was

considered a rival port to Sydney Harbour.

Inland at Yalwal, payable gold was found in 1874 and

TIMES PAST

the following year the first stamp battery was erected.

In its heyday, Yalwal was a thriving mining town but as

the mines became less productive, people moved on,

buildings were dismantled and many were destroyed

by bushfires in 1939.

The Dent and Settree families from Currambene Creek,

pioneered shipbuilding at Huskisson. Built by the Dent

family, the former Sydney Harbour ferry, Lady Denman,

has been restored and is now on display at the Jervis

Bay Maritime Museum on the shores of Huskisson.

The history of the Southern Shoalhaven is recorded

as far back as the voyage of Captain Cook, who

recorded in his log on the 21 April 1770 that he had

sighted a prominent landmark. Cook gave this feature

a European name, ‘Pigeon House’ unaware of the name

‘Didthul’ given to it by the Indigenous people.

One of the first residents in the Ulladulla area was

Rev. Thomas Kendall, who settled just north of the

present township of Milton in 1828. It was here that his

grandson, Henry Kendall was born in 1839. The people

of Ulladulla considered him to be Australia’s poet

laureate and in March 1862 instigated the publishing by

subscription of his poems and songs.

The traditional custodians of the land surrounding the

lower reaches of the Shoalhaven River are the peoples

of the Yuin nation. In the land north of the river, are the

people from the Wodi Wodi clan and south of the river,

the Wandi Wandian clan are the traditional custodians.

Some of the culturally important Aboriginal places

in the Shoalhaven include Coolangatta Mountain

(Cullunghutti), Bundarwa (Beecroft Headland),

Cambewarra Mountain, Didthul or Pigeon House

Mountain, Kangaroo Valley, Burrill Lake, and

Murramarang Aboriginal Area and its environs.

There are a myriad of opportunities to indulge in

your favourite water sport or to take the plunge and

try something new. Diving and snorkelling sites offer

fascinating marine life with several wrecks around for

the more adventurous. There are dive shops in major

centres and fully qualified diving schools providing dive

courses and packages.

You can learn to surf, sail, windsurf, waterski, or ride a

wakeboard with qualified instructors or you can hire

catamarans and boards for independent sailing and

windsurfing. For an exciting experience, enjoy a sea

kayaking trip around Jervis Bay. Inland, canoe or kayak

down the river at Kangaroo Valley or upstream from

Nowra on the Shoalhaven River.

If you’re into equestrian activities, why not explore the

high mountain country of Kangaroo Valley on horse

back, a trail ride at Falls Creek or Termeil. Experienced

riding schools conduct lessons and guided rides in

most areas.

The Bay & Basin Leisure Centre offers a fitness centre,

indoor pools, water slide, spa, crèche, café and sports

shop. In the southern areas, the Ulladulla Leisure Centre

offers aquatic and leisure activities. There are several

other pool complexes throughout the city, ask the

Visitors Information Centre for details.

Dolphin watching cruises operate on Jervis Bay, leaving

Huskisson daily, with whale watching a popular activity

from June to November.

You can cruise the majestic Shoalhaven River to see for

yourself what the buzz is about. If you prefer, you can

sail, snorkel, swim or dolphin watch on purpose-built

boats for day charter on Jervis Bay.

Whatever your fitness or skill level, the Shoalhaven offers visitors a host of outdoor activities.

CHOOSE YOUR NEXT ADVENTURE

Fisher folk are well catered for with charter boats

operating out of major centres. Try your hand at deep

sea fishing or discover game, sport estuary and reef

bottom fishing.

For those who are at home in the tree canopy or simply

want to check it out, the tree adventure course at North

Nowra will have you swinging, leaping, climbing and

flying through the forest. Flying foxes zip between trees

and there are cargo nets, rope bridges and wooden

obstacles – high above the ground. The courses

become increasingly difficult as you climb higher into

the canopy, which means that you can find the right

level to suit you.

If you enjoy a round of golf, you’ll find courses at

Kangaroo Valley, Shoalhaven Heads, Coolangatta,

Nowra, Worrigee, Callala Beach, Vincentia, St Georges

Basin, Sussex Inlet and Mollymook. There are mini golf

courses at East Nowra and Huskisson.

The Shoalhaven region has some of Australia’s best surfing spots to suit all styles and abilities. The local surf culture is fun and relaxed. There are plenty of waves to be caught all-year round and often a surfer can find the water all to themselves or sharing with a playful pod of dolphins.

With water temperatures at a warm 22°C in summer

and a balmy 15°C during winter, summer is the popular

time for most beach-goers. Winter brings the deep, low

pressures and large southerly swells which surfers look

forward to during the long summer months.

As any surfer would know, there are many great breaks

that can be found with a bit of exploration and a useful

2–3m groundswell out of the east.

Whether you’ve been coming to the Shoalhaven region since childhood, or this is your first visit, you’re sure to have the time of your life

Holidays are great for kids and for the kid in every

grown- up. They give you precious time to spend

carefree hours far from the stress of school and

work to simply enjoying being alive in these magical

surroundings.

For the young and not so young adventurer, the

Shoalhaven offers a myriad of activities. The city is

renowned far and wide for its many unspoiled beaches,

from ocean surf breaks to sheltered bays and coves.

For fantastic fun on the water, you can hire canoes,

kayaks, stand up paddle boards and boats and paddle

our rivers, lakes and beaches or rent a surfboard from

several locations. Take the family aboard a dolphin

or whale cruise for the thrill of seeing these amazing

animals up close.

The swimming pools and leisure centres throughout the

Shoalhaven give you a chance to relax while the kids tire

themselves out with aquatic activities.

Bring your bikes and take them on a bush track to explore

some of the many forests. For younger children, try out

the shared pathway along the Shoalhaven River in Nowra,

or the track running along Collingwood Beach. Or for

something different, head out to Shoalhaven Heads to see

the sky filled with colourful kites.

Horse riding is a great family pastime, and we have

magnificent surroundings for horse riding escapades,

whether it’s a lush forest mountain ride or a dense and

woody bush scrub trail, there’s nothing like taking in the

dramatic Shoalhaven scenery on horseback. Horse riding

adventures can be found at Kangaroo Valley, Falls Creek

and Termeil.

And for a different sort of ride, experience the region on

an amazing, guided Segway Tour.

FAMILY FUN

The city has a vast selection of parks and reserves,

equipped with safe play equipment for the littlies,

together with facilities for a laid-back barbeque or

picnic. And for the energetic family, discover one of

Shoalhaven’s many bushwalks, from easy to the more

adventurous.

For something different, try the new Trees Adventure

at Shoalhaven Zoo – giving you a different view of the

animals while hanging from a tree like a monkey! The

cliff and tree adventure will push your boundaries but you

will be pleased you overcame your fears to experience this

thrilling tree-top quest!

For those who have a need for speed, the Nowra

Speedway holds regular speedcar races, guaranteed to

delight your little ones and provide an entertaining night

out for the whole family.

If you’re looking for a slightly more relaxed family outing,

Nowra and Ulladulla both have multi-screen cinemas,

showing the latest blockbusters, while a more intimate

screening session can be found at the smaller Huskisson

and Sussex Inlet cinemas. You just can’t beat the

experience of watching a movie on a big screen.

With laser skirmish, rides, dodgems and arcade games,

it’s a fun time all year round at Ulladulla Funland. The

indoor amusement park has three floors of rides and

games ensuring there is plenty to keep the youngsters

(and the young at heart) amused long enough for you to

have a well-earned rest.

Older kids will be hanging out to try one of the city’s

skate parks, from Berry to Ulladulla. There are so many

wonderful activities, you’ll want to come again and again

just to fit them all in.

As if the gorgeous beaches, beautiful scenery, and fantastic community events weren’t enough incentive to visit Shoalhaven, there’s the added display of migrating whales each year from June to November.

These majestic creatures are the greatest travellers on the planet and those who are lucky enough

to get up close and personal describe an intensely moving experience.

The calm waters of Jervis Bay make ideal conditions for viewing these beautiful creatures up close.

The Bay is a place where mothers and their calves come to rest and have a little play on the return

leg of their journey.

Some of the finest whale watching in New South Wales can be seen here in the Shoalhaven,

either by going out in search of whales on a tour, or from the many vantage points throughout the

Shoalhaven. Penguin Head at Culburra, the old ruined lighthouse at Booderee National Park and

the Ulladulla Lighthouse on Warden Street, Ulladulla are great places to track whale activity.

Visit wildaboutwhales.com.au or download the app. to stay up to date with whale movements via

the interactive map and find out about planned whale discovery tours during whale season.

It’s not all about the whales – the coast is teeming with seals, little penguins, dolphins and

amazing birdlife making your visit a truly memorable experience.

If you would like to see the whales up close and personal, book a whale watching tour with one of

the local tour operators.

As you travel along the south coast, you can see the distinctive outline of Pigeon House Mountain Didthul against the horizon from miles away.

At 719 metres above sea level, the peak was named by Captain Cook in 1770 as the Endeavour

sailed up the coast, because Cook considered the peak resembled the shape of a dovecote. The

local Indigenous people had always called the mountain Didthul, so now it bears dual names.

Drive off the Princes Highway either from Milton or south of Burrill Lake onto Wheelbarrow Road,

around 30 km. The gravel road passes through forests of spotted gum, bloodwood and silvertop

ash to arrive at the base of the walking track, a picnic area with tables, barbeque and toilet facilities.

The return walk to the summit takes around four hours and is in four stages with the first part a

steep 800 metres, then a flat kilometre followed by a steep 500 metre climb and then onto a series

of steel ladders attached to the cliff face.

Around 8000 people climb Pigeon House Mountain Didthul each year to experience the

exhilaration of the climb and the reward of the magnificent views from the summit. Spread

out below are rugged cliffs and gorges carved out by the Clyde River and its tributaries, as

well as Byangee Walls and The Castle. On a clear day, you can see as far to the north as Point

Perpendicular and Mount Dromedary in the south.

If you’re planning to drive out to Pigeon House Mountain Didthul, it’s suggested you first check

with the visitors centre on the condition of the road.

The star attractions of Jervis Bay are the humpback whales, their acrobatic antics an

awe-inspiring thrill to watch. They make their passage up the east coast to mate in the warm

tropical waters of Queensland, and Jervis Bay is a regular haunt on their journey. Whale-watching

tours are offered during June to November migration season.

The waters of Jervis Bay abound with underwater life and are home to more than 100 bottle-nose

dolphins, with dolphin cruises operating daily from Huskisson.

The history of the area revolves around the bay and its ship-building activities. The Jervis Bay

Marine Museum in Huskisson has permanent and travelling exhibitions and the ferry, the Lady

Denman, is housed in the maritime museum. The museum concentrates on the history of Jervis Bay

and district, including early exploration, the timber industry, Aboriginal history, early settlement,

lighthouse history, shipwrecks, coastal shipping, whaling history and Naval base history.

With sheltered coves providing safe mooring and great fishing opportunities, the Jervis Bay area is

a favourite for avid sailors. All of the townships in the area are positioned on the coast, taking great

advantage of the fantastic views, the sun, surf and sea atmosphere.

There are good holiday services for the holiday maker and lots of accommodation from top-of-the-

range guesthouses and bed and breakfasts to motels, tourist parks, holiday cottages and

eco-camping.

JERVIS BAYRenowned as having the whitest sand in the world, Jervis Bay is ideal for a variety of water activities including sailing, swimming, fishing, sailboarding, SCUBA diving, snorkelling and stand-up paddle boarding.
