2. INTRODUCTION Todays Society Focusing on what is going on today and how did we getto this method Old School Techniques Look back on previous generations and review theirmethods What Should Be The Steps For The Future Do things need to change or should we continue topractice this method 3. TODAYS SOCIETY Why we started to hand awards to everyone? People argue that handing out awards to only the winners willmake the children see themselves as no good at sports or aslosers, feeling discouraged and tend to drop out Teachers and coaches have been encouraged to make childrenfeel an equal sense of accomplishment by boosting their selfesteem and to ignore the weaknesses. This creates noaccountability for the children at such a young impressionable age Awards are for worthy deeds that actually encourage children totry harder, take pride in their own abilities and do the right thing Some people feel that children should be motivated to participatein sports to keep them healthy and fit, they believe that rewardingchildren for attendance is the right method of encouragement Click to watch video (skip ahead and watch from 3:00-4:00minutes of the video) 4. TODAYS SOCIETY Providing children with participation ribbons/trophies/etc sets children up for entitlement for the rest of their lives. Generation Z believes that things should just be handed to them It is a poor message to send that no matter how little they try they will still receive something for nothing If rewards were only distributed for the winners, it would encourage children to practice and work harder to improve their skills and achieve success 5. TODAYS SOCIETY A article on parenting states that research repeatedly shows that the more you reward people for doing something, the more they tend to lose interest in whatever they had to do to get the reward A blogger for an online debate voiced their opinion by saying You dont get rewarded for losing in the real world. Why should we blind our children with lies? They will grow up and face problems in the world. They should know that you only get rewarded for over coming things, not for only trying 6. OLD SCHOOL METHOD 7. WHAT SHOULD BE THE STEPS BE FOR THEFUTURE?Options: Continue with handing out awards to everyone? Give just the winners an award? New technique/Possible compromise? Have we gone too far with all this praise? 8. CONTINUE WITH CURRENT SYSTEM Today, we live in a everyone wins society The millennial generation and youngergrew up with participation trophies Boosts self-esteem in some kids Many kids expect a trophy for being a part of ateam 9. PROBLEMS WITH CURRENT SYSTEM Coddles youth Sense of entitlement No loser Always a winner (losing opportunity to teach a lifelesson) 10. ONLY WINNERS SHOULD GET A TROPHY (OLDSCHOOL METHOD) Old school method Only reward winners May show other kids what they can get if they workharder A great motivational tool Teaches great life lessons at a younger age Teaches sportsmanship amongst many other things 11. PROBLEMS WITH OLD SCHOOL METHOD You are going to tell my six-year old isnt getting atrophy Adds more pressure to win Puts less emphasis on participation Could deter youth from wanting to participate If you aint first youre last mentality Could take fun out of youth sports 12. BEST SOLUTION GOING FORWARD Look at the reasons we hand out trophies 1. To recognize something special 2. For motivation Find a balance between the old schooland current system Award players for first place Add coaches awards Participation trophies for U-8leagues The goal of a trophy should be to award hard workand motivate others to work hard There is a need for a combination of the two methods 13. CONCLUSION Pros and cons of both methods Trophies and other awards have been a longstanding way of rewarding athletes In the past the top players and teams would get areward Now we give awards just for participating So many trophies may devalue the meaning We want to boost our children self-esteem Balancing praise and rewards Make sure sports continue to teach valuable lifelessons 14.
