Feedback fromcustomers andstakeholdershelped toshape thefinal scheme

THE launch of the new SimpliCITYnetwork is very exciting for everyoneat First Glasgow, but what mattersmost is how the changes makethings easier for the overwhelmingmajority of our customers.

Every part of the network hasbeen designed with our customersin mind, from the new buses withleather seating and free WiFi tomore frequent buses on key routeswith renumbering taking place tomake services easier to understand.

Consultation on the new networkran for seven weeks. This was notsomething we were legally obligedto do, but we wanted to be openwith our customers about our plansand give them the opportunity to

have their say on our proposals. We are delighted with the

response we received and wouldlike to thank everyone who puttheir comments forward. Ouroriginal plans have been amendedand strengthened as a result of thefeedback we received during theconsultation. Our customers areone of our most important assets –they are what make our business.

We have tried to keep any fareincreases to a minimum andthousands will benefit from betterservices as well as the cut-priceAdult Day tickets from May 26. Wehope the new network will alsolead to more people opting to travelby bus once they see howimpressive it is.

CUSTOMERS andstakeholders helped to shapechanges to Glasgow’s busnetwork. Original plans forthe SimpliCITY networkwere taken to consultation, with people given theopportunity to give theirfeedback.

More than 8,000 visits weremade to the onlineconsultation website andmore than 500 commentswere received by email.

After taking onboard thefeedback, planners mademore than a dozen changesto strengthen the network.

Revisions have been madeto the network as a result ofthe feedback received. Theyinclude retaining earlymorning buses on the Service36 to Cumbernauld, used byworkers to WestfieldIndustrial Estate.

A15-minute frequency willbe retained on the Service 21during morning and eveningpeak hours instead of theproposed 30 minutefrequency and First will alsoretain the evening service toGardenhall, which had beenscheduled for withdrawal inthe original plans. Concernsabout the loss of service onthe lower section of CrowRoad on the new Service 19Ahave also been listened toand the current route will bekept.

Close workingLetters also went out to

more than 400 stakeholdersto inform them aboutproposals for the newnetwork. MPs, MSPs, localcouncillors and other officialsincluding those fromStrathclyde Partnership forTransport were offered thechance to meet with FirstGlasgow staff to give theirfeedback in a similar way.

First Glasgow’s ManagingDirector Ronnie Park said:“We wanted to be open withour customers and involvethem in the process as muchas possible. We also workedvery closely with ourstakeholders.

“During the consultation, customers and stakeholderssaid they liked the simplifiedservice numbers, but raisedconcerns about the samenumber being used for two ormore destinations. We havetweaked our original plansand service numbers to makethem easier to understand.

Strengthened“The consultation was the

most comprehensiveundertaken in recent yearsand I would like to thankeveryone who contributed. Ibelieve our original planshave been strengthened as aresult of the consultation andeven more passengers willbenefit.”

Services to Clydebank andMilngavie were to be calledService 60, but will nowinstead be named Service 60and Service 60A. Similarroute number changes havebeen introduced throughoutthe revised plans where thesame number is used formore than one destination.

BUS passengers in Glasgow have spoken upabout why a recently relaunched service hasbecome their favourite.

Service 204/205 was upgraded andrenamed The One as part of a £6 millioninvestment by First into improving busservices in the city.

A fleet of brand new single deck busesequipped with complimentary WiFi andleather seats were introduced with a fast, direct and frequent service up to every sixminutes.

First ran a competition to give customersthe chance to feature on dedicated busadverts. The five winners chosen love theservice – which provides a link from theDumbarton area to the city centre via

Clydebank and Scotstoun – because it is fast, efficient and comfy.

Identical twins John and Peter Douglas, aged 76, from Bellsmyre, are fans of theleather seats. They said: “After 40 years oftravelling by bus, it’s a double thumbs up forThe One – our most comfortable journeyever.

“Never did we think that our photographwould appear on the back of a bus. This hasbeen a great experience.”

Lindsay Allan, aged 31, of Old Kilpatrick, won for her entry that read: “Number Onefor school, nursery, work and the shops – meand my boys think this bus rocks. It’s fast, it’ssleek, comfy too. More space, seats and WiFifor you!”

The mum-of-three, who stars in an ad with

her young sons, said: “We regularly travel onThe One and the service is great. The driversare really helpful and courteous and get usto where we want to go quickly and safely.

“It has been a great experience beinginvolved in the competition. It’s really goodthat First Bus is involved in the communityand engages with its customers.”

Andrew Crerand, aged 24, from Clydebank, travels on The One seven days a week. Hisadvert reads: “Meeting friends, going to work, college or a night out, this bus is The One forme.”

Fellow competition winners universitystudent Jodie Lannigan, aged 23, and regularcommuter Gil Guine, aged 31, both fromScotstoun, praised the service for being fast, frequent and efficient.

THE launch of the SimpliCITYnetwork heralds a series of servicenumber changes which aredesigned to make it easier forcustomers to catch a bus to theirdestination, more frequently.

There has been a total of 32number changes which affect citycentre routes and other key FirstBus corridors across GreaterGlasgow.

Planners have been working todevelop the number changes overthe last nine months andpassenger groups have beenheavily involved in theconsultation process too.

The concept was piloted as partof The One service whichreplaced Services 204 and 205.

It has meant buses with afrequency of every five to sixminutes between Scotstoun andthe city centre – with the servicebeing hailed as a success bycustomers.

All the service number changescome into effect on Sunday, May26 with the launch of theSimpliCITY Network.

Split routesA comprehensive guide to all

the service number changes ispublished on page 11 of thisisssue of Shout. Regular Twitterand Facebook updates, advertsand a dedicated information buswill also help to spread themessage.

John Elliot, CommercialManager for First Glasgow said:“The service number changesreflect the streamlinedSimpliCITY network.

“They make it easier forcustomers to catch a bus in aparticular corridor and if theyneed to travel further afield, letters such as A or B have beenused to identify split routes.

For example, the currentService 7 from Halfway to the citycentre via Kings Park has nowbeen separated into Service 7 andService 7A to make distinct thetwo different destinations.

Confident“In general it means people can

catch more buses than everbefore to get to their destination –and passengers, stakeholders andfocus groups are really welcomingthis boost in frequency.”

John added: “Minibus serviceshave been prefixed with an ‘M’ –for instance, the M60 service fromDrumchapel to Clydebank – and, where possible, service numbershave been made simpler. andeasier to remember.

“Public consultation has been akey part of the number changeprocess and where possible wehave taken onboard theircomments in shaping the newservices.

“We are confident this will be abig hit with customers based onthe success we have had with TheOne service – which has helpedus to make bus travel betweenScotstoun and the city centresimpler and more frequent.”

FAMILIES travelling by First Bus inGlasgow have been handed more goodnews to coincide with the launch of theSimpliCITY network.

The cost of children’s fares has beenslashed by 20 per cent – from 75p downto 60p. And while a small 5p increasehas been applied to the cost of itsSingle Adult Short Hop and Long Hoptickets, First has frozen the vastmajority of its other fares.

The big freeze also applies to all FirstDay and return tickets – among themost popular with customers travellingby bus in the city. The Adult City Dayticket will also be reduced in price tomark the SimpliCITY launch.

Ronnie Park, Managing Director ofFirst Glasgow, said: “Despite rising costsand the ongoing challenging economy,we have been able to significantly

reduce children’s tickets and freezemany other ticket types in this faresreview. I am particularly pleased thatwe’ve been able to reduce thechildren's single ticket – I am sure thiswill prove popular amongst familiesacross our network.

“And given that the cost of city centreparking increased from April, we felt itwas important that we freeze themajority of our tickets.

“Our day tickets and season tickets, especially, are more likely to temptmotorists increasingly fed up with thecost and hassle of running a car – notto mention the problems associatedwith city centre parking – to use thebus more often.

“We have had to increase some adultsingle fares, but I can assure customersthat we’ve kept these to the absoluteminimum.

“Almost every single cost associatedwith running a bus company isincreasing. A recent study by theConfederation of Passenger Transportshowed that overall operating costs forbus companies increased by 4.7 percent in 2012.

“Those costs are likely to increasefurther in 2013. However, we have doneeverything possible to avoid passingthose costs on to our customers.”

Ronnie emphasised that bus travelcontinues to represent very good valuefor money. “I think all our ticket offersare terrific value. For example, customers using a First4Week ticketcan enjoy unlimited bus travel acrossthe city for as little as £1.35 a day. Whenyou consider the cost of running a car –fuel, insurance, road tax, depreciationand parking – travelling by bus is anattractive alternative.”

FIRST Glasgow employees have beenurged to carry on enhancing thecompany’s green credentials this yearafter the Group won a series ofenvironment accolades.

First Bus nationally has reduced thevolume of waste going to landfill by 10per cent over the last 12 monthsacross its entire UK operations ofmore than 70 depots.

The company has also successfullyreduced its gas and electricity usageby seven per cent – another significantsaving for the business.

A major reason for First’s successhas been attributed to its internalenvironmental campaign, “SmallChanges, Big Difference”, which aimsto get staff throughout the companyinvolved in waste recycling and energyconservation initiatives.

The campaign, which has beenhailed a success, also picked up twoawards last year – the Silver GreenApple Environment Award and themuch-coveted Environmental prize atthe UK Bus Awards, one of the busindustry’s most respected recognitionevents.

FirstGroup’s Head of EnvironmentKaterina Robinson said: “The ‘SmallChanges Big Difference’ campaign iseffective in helping us to achieve someof the ambitious targets set out in ourfive year Environmental Plan.

“Our environmental focus has

traditionally concentrated on reducingemissions from our buses, the resultsof which have been very rewarding.”

The latest awards capped asuccessful year for the First Groupenvironmental team. In April last year,First jointly won the SustainabilityAward at the Scottish PLC Awards. InMay the sustainability performance ofFirst was named best in the UK and

second best in the world by EIRIS, theleading global provider of independentresearch into the environmental, social, governance and ethicalperformance of companies.

Also, FirstGroup achieved theinternationally acclaimed CarbonTrust Standard which recognises thecompany’s efforts to reduce carbonemissions across its operations.

Deep sea anglercatches the bus!

DEEP sea angler Charles Boyle is adab hand at catching fish – but he’snever tried to hook a bus before!

The Larkfield Driver, picturedabove, was only too happy tocast his rod on dry land to helppromote the launch of First’snew SimpliCITY network inGlasgow.

Charles donned his waterproofgear and wielded one of his rods

at the depot to join in themarketing fun and send out themessage: there are easier waysto catch a bus.

Demonstrating hispresentation skills, the driverrecorded an Augmented Reality(AR) video clip while he wascasting his line.

It’s just the latest proof ofCharles’ versatility – in his sparetime he travels to all points of

the compass to seek out cod, tope and skate, switching fromsea angling to freshwater fishingwherever there’s hope of a bite.

To bring the angling imageabove to life, and access the ARclip showing Charles introducingthe SimpliCITY information inthis newspaper, point yoursmartphone or tablet at thephoto (see instructions on pagethree).
