Page 3: Show Open Times - Der WEINbau · A PREVIEW TO THE LONDON INTERNATIONAL WINE FAIR & DISTIL 2012 Show Open Times: Tuesday 22nd May 9.30 – 18.00 Wednesday 23rd May 9.30 – 18.00

It’s been a remarkable year for the team preparing for the 32nd London International Wine Fair and Distil. Much of the summer of 2011 was spent in consultation with exhibitors and visitors as to whether the event should change venue, and more radically, whether or not consumers should be invited to attend. The question of venue was all but answered for us when Earl’s Court confirmed plans to redevelop the entire site, and Olympia lost its dedicated tube service while still suffering from stifling heat under its glass roof.

The question of consumers being allowed to attend the Fair, however, did reveal something of a split decision. Nobody doubts the value of being ‘consumer facing’ in these tough economic times, but would the LIWF become a better event if wine-loving members of the general public were invited to attend, either at certain times, or to a specific section of the Fair?

The debate gathered momentum and opinions from producers, buyers and the trade at large were canvassed. The results were some 75% in favour of remaining firmly trade only without concessions, which in turn led us to keeping the existing format for another year at least.

That said, the 2012 event is still packed with other new initiatives, features and tastings. We’re delighted to welcome the finals of the UK Sommelier of the Year on the Wednesday, and a new zone aimed at championing niche producers and importers, our Small Independents Pavilion, will have pride of place at the front of the hall.

The International Wine Challenge will, for the first time, hold their ‘Discovery Tasting’ at the Fair. The tasting provides buyers with the opportunity to assess any style of wine entered into the IWC whose producers are seeking an importer. Over 1,000 wines will be available and are grouped by country/style and split into three sections: on-trade, high street & supermarkets and independent off-trade. A truly remarkable tasting – and one not to be missed.

Specific features too have been introduced for independent retailers and the on-trade, with details in your copy of this year’s Grapevine. For the most up-to-date show news, or to book seminars and masterclasses, please visit www.londonwinefair.com

All in all, the 2012 LIWF will be an exceptional showcase of the global wine trade today; and with some fifty tastings, debates, seminars and briefings taking place, I am positive that your three-day voyage will lead to many discoveries and rewarding business opportunities.

ArgentinaThe Argentine export council (Consejo Federal de Inversiones)

(N60-O60) will host 17 wineries at this year’s LIWF. Amongst the wineries there are three producers making their very first steps on UK soil, Vina Qaramy, Garbin Estate and Funckenhausen Vineyards. Familiar names include, La Riojana and Don Cristobal as well as award-winning winery, La Guarda from San Juan. An unusual addition to the

group is Bodegas del Desierto which produces wines from vineyards planted in pure sand desert terrain. Renowned winemaker and consultant, Mauricio Lorca will be present too with his own label range.

La Riojana (N60-O60) will showcase a number of its award-winning Torrontés alongside an impressive selection

of organic, Fairtrade, conventional, still and sparkling wines together with new vintage releases. La Riojana’s top award winners on show will include Tilimuqui Single Vineyard Fairtrade Organic Torrontés 2011 which scooped the highly-coveted Torrontés

Trophy at the Argentina Wine Awards 2012. La Riojana will also be launching its Raza Signature Series Malbec 2011 and Raza Signature Series Torrontés 2011 at the Fair. The Raza Signature Series is a new range of wines, dressed in elegant packaging, which have been created to target the UK on-trade and independents.

Trivento (O54) will show its Otra Vida range which has been repackaged and slimmed down to comprise two varieties; Malbec and Chardonnay. Punchy blue and white packaging in a typical Argentine art deco style gives the brand new shelf appeal. Following a complete re-brand, both the Reserva on and off-trade labels are sporting elegant new labels which reflect the quality of the wine in the bottle. On-trade visitors should check out the repackaged Zonda brand, which will introduce a new Merlot Rosé to the range.

Australia

Visit A+ Australian wines (N32) for an insight into the quality and diversity of fine wines now coming out of this great country, with producer zones and feature tastings. It’s a celebration of being the market leader in the UK for a decade. On-stand feature tastings will give a snapshot of different facets of the Australian story. These will include a taste of

the A+ Australian One Day Wine School and themed tastings such as ‘Old Vines, New Wines’ to look at the wealth of historic vineyards in Australia. Visit www.wineaustralia.com/uk for more information. Wine Australia will be offering Little Creatures beer on the stand from 5.30pm on Wednesday 23rd. This is for any attendees and exhibitors to turn up and wind down with a cold beer.

D’Aquino Wine (O15) will launch its redesigned Starfish brand label and will also show new vintages. Starfish is a range of table wines from Hunter Wine Services, focusing on classic varietal flavours. Chief winemaker John Hordern has blended these current vintages to specifically complement a wide variety of

cuisines – from spicy Asian dishes through to rich Mediterranean platters. The fruit for these wines is sourced from selected vineyards in the Central Ranges, New South Wales. (RRSP £8.99 – £10.99).

Third generation Australian family wine company De Bortoli Wines (N33) will preview wines from the 2012 vintage. Victor De Bortoli, Leanne De Bortoli & chief-winemaker, Steve Webber, are flying over to the UK.

Austria 22 producers will be exhibiting in the Austrian Pavilion (I50 & J50) this year, focusing on the country’s outstanding grape varieties and an in-depth look at the “Archetypes of Austrian Wines” will be featured in a series of wine tasting seminars. The seminars will highlight indigenous grape varieties, such as the

black grapes Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, Sankt Laurent, alongside Austria’s signature white wine variety Grüner Veltliner. These seminars will be held daily at 11.00am in a designated tasting area at the Austrian wine pavilion. In addition to the seminars, there will be themed Austrian wine tastings held daily at the Wine Bar of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board stand, as well a presentation featuring the renowned Austrian glass maker, Riedel.

The Müller Estate (I50/J50) is located in the middle of the wine producing village of Krustetten, which is situated in the southern region of the Krems Valley. Leopold Müller and his family create a range of fruitful and typical wines with a focus on Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. The Müller estate is also known for its velvety-spicy red wines and a broad selection of its portfolio will be at the LIWF.

Austrian sparkling wine brand, Schlumberger (J50), is previewing its award-winning White Secco brand this year. The brand has recently launched in other world markets and is enjoying unprecedented success across the countries where it is now available. White Secco is bridging the gap between Champagne and Prosecco

and is now seeking on-trade and specialist off-trade distribution in the UK.

The Schmelz Winery (I50) is situated in the small winemaking village Joching where it has been cultivating vines for five generations. The small family winery is currently run by Johann and Monika, supported by their two sons Thomas and Florian. Grüner Veltliner is a focus for the winery and makes up about 60% of the vineyards area

followed by Riesling at 30%. They will be showing a range of wines at the LIWF.

Winzerhof Hoch (I50/J50) will be exhibiting on the Austrian Pavilion this year and is

looking for an importer to develop retail sales in the UK. A key focus for the Hoch family is Grüner Veltliner and it will show a range from this varietal which illustrate the effect of terroir on style; its vineyards are located in the newly-created Kremstal DAC on Hollenburg soil which produces full bodied, mineral wines.

BrazilWith the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016, the eyes of the world will be on Wines of Brasil (K43). Brazil is one of the main wine producing countries of the southern hemisphere. The wine industry is now established and family-based, the economy is strong and the producers are investing in key export markets. The wines are generally of lower alcohol compared to the rest of South America, fitting in with the growing trend in this area. The stand will host producers showing still and sparkling wines, with a particular focus on Moscato. Attending producers will include those seeking distribution in the UK and Europe, including Aurora, Salton, Casa Valduga, Boscato, Dunamis, Basso, Pizzato, Lidio Carraro, Miolo and ViniBrasil.

ChileCono Sur’s (O54) varietal range has been repackaged and the new look will be unveiled for the first time. The front labels still feature the old-style bicycle that has become Cono Sur’s trademark but the use of colour and gold embossing makes the packaging

look and feel more premium and eye-catching. Cono Sur’s Reserva Especial and Single Vineyard ranges also have new packaging and both will be unveiled at the show. Head Winemaker Adolfo Hurtado will show new wines: Cosecha Noble is a late harvest Riesling from the Bío Bío Valley, bottled in 37.5cl format with a screwcap. Also new is Cono Sur Sparkling Brut Rosé, made from 100% Pinot Noir from the Bío Bío Valley.

Dyonisos Wines (P65/15) will be at the LIWF for the first time. The estate produces five ranges covering varietals and blends from the Casablanca and Maule Valleys. They also produce two icon wines from a single vineyard in the Maipo Alto Valley. Pascal Marty, CEO and winemaker, has an impressive track record making icon wines, including Opus One and Almaviva.

The vineyards grown by the Errázuriz Ovalle Family (O54) lie in the western end of the Colchagua Valley – Marchigue. This year the winery will celebrate its 10th harvest and now exports 700,000 cases of wine for the off-trade markets. It will show the 2010 vintage of its Tricycle wine, a blend of Merlot, Cabernet

Sauvignon and Syrah.

Francois Lurton (O54) will show its 2009 Gran Araucano Cabernet Sauvignon which won Best Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon earlier this year.

Santa Rita Estates (2, P55) are to showcase a new brand makeover and four new releases at the Fair. The Carmen Winemakers Reserve

wine has been re-branded, organic brand Nativa will be available for tasting under

a new label and Santa Rita has added a new wine to their hugely successful 120 tier. Santa Rita Estates will also show the two ultra-premium Carmen Winemakers Reserve wines, each of which are based on a single variety: Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignon. Nativa will have three wines available for tasting on the stand of its new UK distributor, Liberty Wines (P40). These three new wines – Nativa Sauvignon Blanc 2011, Nativa Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 and Nativa Carmenère 2009 – will have an RRSP of approximately £9.99.

FranceThis year’s French Zone will host 51 companies showcasing an amazing diversity of French wines including wines from the following regions: Beaujolais, Bordeaux, Loire, Provence, and the South of France. The

Fast-Track to France stand, located at the heart of the French Zone, will feature a selection of award-winning French wines from LIWF exhibitors. This self-service tasting area is designed as a qualitative shortcut for visitors keen to get an overview of the French offering at the Fair.

The “Stand by Beaujolais” (G40/2) at this year’s Fair showcases wines from all 12 Beaujolais appellations including Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages and the 10 Crus. It presents an opportunity to taste high-quality and versatile Beaujolais wines and meet some of the most talented and innovative producers who make them. Beaujolais Wines will also host a series of seminars, presented by well-known wine experts, Charles Metcalfe, Sarah Jane Evans MW and Sally Easton MW, on its stand.

BIOtiful wines (G30/6) is a new association

of independent winegrowers who share the same philosophy: to produce exceptional wines from organic/biodynamic grapes. They are participating at the LIWF for the first time. The family estates include Camille Braun from Alsace, Champagne Collard-Picard, Bordeaux’s Chateau Ferran, Bourgogne Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson, Muscadet Domaine le Fay d’Homme, Domaine Rouge Garance from the Rhône and Vignobles Despagne Rapin from Saint Emilion and Pomerol. BIOtiful wines are exclusively dedicated to the UK on-trade.

La Chablisienne – Caves Bailly Lapierre – Vignerons de Buxy (G30/7) will show a new Crèmant from Caves de Bailley Lapierre. Vive-la-Joie is both a white and rose cuvée, made with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It is designed for ageing. A full range of winery portfolios will also be shown.

Châteaux Cailley, from Bordeaux will be celebrating 200 years of winemaking on the French Pavilion (F40/2). A family operation, they produce two wines which winemaker Evelyne Cailley will present on stand: Château Toulouze, Graves de Vayres and Château Le Maine Martin, Bordeaux Supérieur. Both are made using traditional methods – ploughing, organic

vegetable composting, hand-harvesting and long fermentations. They also sell wines from small producers from Bordeaux’s top appellations (Margaux, Saint Emilion, Saint Estephe and Haut Medoc). All wines are available for both the on and off-trade.

L’Original Combier will be shown on the Combier stand (F30). Created in Saumur in 1834, it is the world’s first crystal clear orange liqueur. Composed of a harmonious blend of

exotic sun dried orange peels steeped in alcohol and triple distilled in the very same 175 year-old copper alembics first used by the Combier family, this vibrant liqueur can be enjoyed over ice or as a cocktail ingredient – it makes an excellent base for a Margarita.

Firmly focused on France, supplier to multiple retailers Dedicated Wines (O21) wants to inject some theatre, fun and “joie de vivre” to the show this year with their new stand Le Bistro O21, which will offer a menu of classic French wines in a French bistro environment.

The inspiration for the new stand was Les Dauphins from the Rhône, created by Dedicated Wines in 2011, which will show new brand extensions. This brand has met with huge acclaim from buyers and consumers since its launch. Tables will be hosted by Dedicated Wines, their French winemakers and producer representatives.

Les Vignobles Foncalieu (F30/2G) will launch three on-trade lines at this year’s LIWF: Domaine Laure B, a range of organic

IGP Languedoc wines comprising a Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon all from the 2011 vintage and with an RRSP of £6.99; two new wines from the up-and-coming appellation Côtes-du-Rhône Villages – Saint Gervais – will also be shown: Domaine La Ricoune and Les Rouvières both from the 2011 vintage and with an RRSP of £7.49. Additionally, a new range

of premium IGP Pays d’Oc wines designed for partnering great food will be launched, Gourmandises. These varietal wines include a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Malbec, a Grenache and a Syrah (RRP £6.29).

Brigitte Lurton (F40/7) is a French wholesaler specialising in “terroir” wines. She has created a range of five wines, all bottled on the estate, and sold under the “Brigitte Lurton” brand. The wines are positioned as approachable, with clear, uncluttered labels, flash codes and sub 10 price points. The range encourages consumers to explore little-known appellations and include a 100% Grenache Côtes Catalanes red, two Côteaux du Salagou wines (one red and one white), a local country wine from the Lot, made from 100% Malbec, and a red local country wine from Montauban. Bottled in lightweight Ecova bottles, these wines are environmentally-friendly.

Mare Magnum (G23) will show its Bag-in-Bag wine Vernissage, which has taken both wine-lovers and the press by storm, internationally. Behind the success are Sofia Blomberg, creator of the unique packaging design and Takis Soldatos, creator of the wine. The results are elegant design

and typical French blends: Chardonnay-Viognier, Syrah-Cabernet and Syrah Rosé. The

idea behind Vernissage is a playful approach for the modern wine consumer.

Marrenon (F40/8), the leading producer in the Luberon Natural Park, will be at the Fair. Based in Southern Rhône Valley and in the heart of Provence, Marrenon will be showing new wines and Chief Winemaker, Philippe Tolleret, will host a Vermentino tasting – the signature variety of the Luberon. Export Director, Robert Oustric will be showing the “Orca” cuvées, made from 100 year old Grenache vines and Noémie Coursodon, Marrenon ambassador, will highlight the Luberon Syrah, including the recently launched ‘Gardarem’, made from 98% Syrah.

will be showing a range of wines covering a wide variety of price points and wine styles, including new vintages from the Arrogant Frog and La Forge Estate brands, as well as wines from some of the most exciting Languedoc appellations and crus including Picpoul de Pinet. Winemakers showcase

Larry Cherubino is Director of Production at Robert Oatley Vineyards. Based in Pemberton, Larry has worked with the Oatley family winemaking team since 2007. He is one of Australia’s most acclaimed

winemakers, with extensive experience in large and small wineries in Australia and major overseas wine producing regions, and around 300 wine show medals attached to his extensive CV. He is renowned for his passionate commitment to maximising wine quality in both vineyard and winery and for having a highly developed understanding of modern wine styles. A graduate of Roseworthy College, Larry had a distinguished career with BRL Hardy at Tintara in South Australia and then at Houghton in Western Australia. ● Ehrmanns (N42)

Laurent Chevalier was born in 1973 in Paris. His family comes from the Bresse region, not too

far from Beaujolais, where his grandfather was a négociant. While studying in Paris, Laurent discovered his passion for viticulture and enology. His new found passion led him to pursue studies in Montpellier where he acquired a degree in Agricultural Engineering and The Diploma in Enology from the School of Agronomy. Laurent began his career as Technical Director of the Cellar with a significant vineyard in the South West of

France where he specialized in white wines. In 2009, Laurent Chevalier was appointed Director of the Maison Henry Fessy. ● Louis Latour Agencies (P20)

Winemaker and figurehead for Colombo & Fille, Laure Colombo has a fine pedigree in wine. Daughter of top Rhône winemaker, Jean-Luc Colombo, Laure has been surrounded by wine all her life. Following

some time out travelling the world after studying for a Masters in Management, Laure returned to her roots and has subsequently passed her Bachelor degree in Viticulture and Master in Oenology. Laure is perfectly placed to add her personal touch to the elegant wines of Colombo & Fille, with a feminine edge. Jean-Luc Colombo is a man of passions. When he is not in his vineyards or cellar, he is on the Blue Coast, fishing or hunting with his golden retrievers: Syrah, Corton & Fitou. Independent and family owned, Jean-Luc Colombo, is a relatively young winery. In 1982 Jean-Luc moved to Cornas, with his wife Anne, to set up a pharmacy and oenology lab. Four years later they bought their first vineyard – Les Ruchets. Today, as well as working as a negociant, they have their own vineyards, winery and oenology laboratory. ● Hatch Mansfield (P45)

After graduating in oenology at Bordeaux University, Delphine Glangetas

worked in a number of regions across France before travelling to Australia to work for Cape Mentelle and Yalumba. She returned to France in 1996 to join James Herrick’s team in Narbonne. During those years she acquired a high sense of precision in winemaking and trained her palate to modern wines. After this, she spent five years with Domaine Sainte Rose, a boutique winery near Pézenas, managing the vineyard and designing high quality wines mainly for the UK market. After a few years as a consultant, Delphine moved to Foncalieu and started another adventure.● Les Vignobles Foncalieu (F30/2G)

Faouzi Issa is one of Lebanon’s youngest winemakers. Born and raised in the Bekaa valley, his interest in wine began at the age of 16 when his family purchased Domaine des Tourelles, Lebanon’s oldest winery.

He studied winemaking at Montpellier and during his Masters he worked in Côte-Rôtie at Domaine René Rostaing before joining the legendary Château Margaux, after which he returned home to Lebanon in 2009 to take over the winemaking at Domaine des Tourelles. In the three years since he has been working full time at Domaine des Tourelles, his wines have begun to enjoy great success on the international market and at wine competitions around the world.● Wines of Lebanon (N11)

António Maçanita is one of the leading winemakers of his generation, who has been surprising the wine world with his modern and refined wine styles. He is the winemaker at 13

wineries in Portugal, from the Douro Valley to the Algarve, Including wineries such Quinta de Sant’Ana and Fitapreta (his own project). Leader of innovation and research, he was responsible for implementing NDVI maps (satellite images of vegetative growth) in Portugal’s vineyards. He is also responsible for creating a revolutionary method to reduce volatile acidity in wines and recently has been involved in recovering a near extinct grape variety “Terrantez do Pico” in the Azores Islands. His first Trophy was awarded at the age of 24, and his Quinta de Sant’Ana Riesling was selected as one of the 50 greatest Portuguese wines. ● Oakley Wine Agencies (G4)

Csaba Malatinszky was Hungary’s leading sommelier before turning to winemaking in 1997. He is obsessive about tending his vines and says his 30 hectares, farmed organically in Villány

and Siklos since 2009, are as much as he’d ever want to own as that’ll he can manage himself without delegating. Malatinszky is an experimental winemaker, who does not follow the traditions but considers them in his decision making. He is a conscious fan of the Villány – Siklós terroir and his viticultural philosophy is based upon the complexity of the local environment. His focus is Cabernet France, but he makes excellent whites, including Chardonnay, as well. ● Malatinszky, Wines of Hungary (I20/J25)

Dimiter Panov & Kapka Georgieva are part of the Domaine Boyar winemaking team and are among

the most prominent professionals in their field, proving their knowledge and mastery both in Bulgaria and around the world. Each wine and spirit they create is a reflection of their unique style and creative approach. Dimiter supervises wine production in the

Greg Powers is Director of Winemaking at Badger Mountain Vineyard and has been involved with the operation

with his father, Bill Powers, since the planting of the vineyard in 1982. As Vineyard Manager from 1982 to 1990, Greg was responsible for development of the estate vineyard. In 1990, Greg’s role expanded, moving into the winery to oversee the expansion from 100,000 gallon capacity to the present 550,000 gallons. Under Greg’s leadership, Badger Mountain and Powers wines have received accolades around the world. Greg continues to focus on finding the right growers and vineyard sites to showcase the best of Washington State. He lives in Kennewick with his wife and three children.● World Wine Agencies (F10)

Eyal Rotem of Clos de Gat, learned winemaking at Giaconda, Australia. In 1998 he planted vines

on land surrounding his house in the foothills of Israel’s Judean Mountains. Blessed with unique terroir, he used minimal-interference, coupled with traditional viticultural and winemaking methods and allowed nature to do the rest. The resulting wines are of a consistently superb quality, like his iconic 2006 Sycra Syrah Muscat, which achieved 96 “Parker points”. Showing the excellent 2009 vintage amongst others, Eyal will be giving an insight into his wines and wine-making philosophy.● Maison Sichel (G55)

Oldenburg was founded in 2003 by Adrian Vanderspuy and after extensive research into its winemaking potential he employed renowned viticulturist and winemaker Simon Thompson to

oversee his project to completely re-plant the vineyard and to make the wines. Simon previously worked nearby at Tokara. He shares the belief with Adrian that with the unique terroir of Oldenburg, he has the potential to produce wines of outstanding quality and his aim is to establish Oldenburg Vineyards as one of the best boutique wineries in South Africa. The first commercial vintage from Oldenburg was 2008 and the wines were released in 2010, meeting with unprecedented international acclaim. Simon is a strict practitioner of “bio-viticulture”.● Connoisseur Estates (F6)

Chris Tyrrell is a fifth generation of the Tyrrell winemaking family dynasty. Growing up on the vineyard, Chris has been involved with wine for as long as he can remember and began winemaking

at the age of 17 under the guidance of his grandfather, Australian winemaking icon Murray Tyrrell. Chris’ first vintage was in 2001 whilst he was studying Wine Science at Charles Sturt University. Chris then travelled extensively overseas where he worked in some of the world’s greatest wine regions including Burgundy, The Rhône, Bordeaux and Spain. Now 29, Chris is a director of Tyrrell’s Wines and the Assistant Winemaker.● Fells (P35)

producer and developer of the most significant plantings in Marlborough’s premium sub-region – the Awatere Valley. Tamra produces the Yealands Estate range from grapes grown on the Seaview Vineyard where the micro-climates of the terraces, rolling contours, gullies and ridges produce grapes with an exciting range of phenolic profiles, flavours and structures. Before joining to set up Yealands Estate in 2007, Tamra was a respected winemaker in Sicily, Veneto, Abruzzo, Napa Valley, Margaret River, Hunter Valley, Tunisia and Marlborough. ● Enotria (N40)

Steve Webber is married to Leanne De Bortoli and together they manage the De Bortoli family vineyards in the Yarra Valley. Passionate about enjoying delicious food and wine they are infamous for their

down-to-earth hospitality. Webber has long been a champion of Australia’s Yarra Valley wine region and was awarded Winemaker of the Year by Gourmet Traveler Wine in 2007. Webber’s philosophy is that great wine begins in the vineyard. ‘It’s about site and season, making wines with detail, texture and minerality, charm and interest. Character and personality in wine comes from the imperfections of nature.’● De Bortoli (N33)

Tuesday 22 May10.30 – 11.30Nicolas Joly, La Coulée de Serrant, Savennieres, France

‘The Real Deal’ According the Nicolas Joly, the definition “Best of the Best” belongs to the past. This is what has pushed many winegrowers into using technology to the point of obscenity. This process obscures the natural beauty of winemaking in the vineyard which should respect hierarchies at different stages. Joly insists that a wine should first come from the matrix which bring life to our planet. It is what is called “the expression of nature” ( soil and climate ). Many so-called natural wines are still using herbicides which kill the living agents of the soil and prevent the roots from feeding itself. Many are still using methods which disturb the photosynthesis and taste processes. The consumer has the right to know if the “red fruit” flavour of the wine is achieved through nature or aromatic yeast genetic alternation.

Nicolas will do a talk. No wines. Invitation only.

12.30 – 13.30Paul Beavis, Managing Director of Lanson International UK in association with The Academy of Food and Wine Service

The Lanson Champagne Category Report On 14th March 2012 the market’s first Champagne Category Report was unveiled by Lanson International. The report, which uses unique consumer research and Nielsen and CGA sales data, aims to provide one central point of reference for insight into the UK Champagne market. The report will aid navigation through the Champagne category, provide a greater understanding of the ‘Champagne Shopper’, their motivations to purchase, and provide an overview of the state of the UK trade together with a perspective on the growth prospects for the category.

The briefing at LIWF will focus on the on-trade relevant findings in association with Lanson International’s partnership with AFWS and will be relevant for all sommeliers, on-trade buyers and consultants. The session will finish with a tasting of different styles of Champagne and a look at the Champagne flavour map developed by Lanson and an independent expert.

Attendees will be presented with a hard copy of the category report. To register to attend, email Sarah Peters at [email protected]

Wednesday 23 May11.30 – 13.00UK Sommelier of the Year Competition presented by The Academy of Food & Wine Service

The Champagne Pour! The finest Sommeliers in the country, all competing to become the UK Sommelier of the Year, have only 6 minutes to pour a Magnum of Champagne into 16 glasses.

Each of the glasses must be filled at precisely the same level. Once the sommelier has moved to another glass he or she must not return to a glass already filled and the bottle must be empty at the end. Can it be done, on stage in front of an audience?

The Academy Judges will award marks for the skill of service, the accuracy and the performance of the pour within the time limit. To register to attend, please email your details to Sarah Peters at [email protected]

16.00 – 17.00Frank Martell, Director of Fine and Rare Wines for Heritage Auctions

Buyer be AwareFrank Martell, Director of Heritage Auction’s Fine Wines Dept will lead a candid discussion about what to look for to help ensure a wine’s provenance and condition. If you think that counterfeit wines and the importance of a wine’s provenance affect only Petrus and DRC wine buyers, think again. The trickle down effect tremendously impacts the everyday consumer.

A recent counterfeiter arrest made headlines and left the wine community in shock. Never before has it been more important to be able to demonstrate top provenance in the secondary market, and never before has it been more difficult to do so. The wine trade faces a number of growing and emerging challenges that simply did not exist only a couple decades ago. From the changes and conflicts inherent to modern distribution models, through to storage conditions in the US and Asian markets and of course, the proliferation of fraudulent wines from Lafite to Jacob’s Creek.

This discussion will encompass a relevant tasting component, as well as an interactive demonstration of how wines are tampered with. Invitation only.

The Access ZoneThe Access Zone returns to the London International Wine Fair with its popular mix of seminars, discussions, interviews and tastings combining wine and social media.

Ryan Opaz and the team will again explore the potential of social networks to promote wine stories to a broader audience and find new ways to engage consumers of all levels. With widespread participation in social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google+ and others, we are all now active consumers but also involved in communicating about wine. Sessions will include; the popular introduction to social media, understanding online “influence”, developing wine apps and other practical advice. There will be opportunities to talk to marketing groups with online communication programmes, such as The Grenache Symposium and even a chance to taste a mystery grape and help to decide its future in the UK market. For those who enjoy more vigorous debate, Robert Joseph will ask “Why the wine trade hates customers”, plus we will taste the low sulphite wines from Freewine before attempting to find a middle ground in the Natural Wine debate with Isabelle Legeron MW and others. The Access Zone will also be the venue for the announcement of the second annual Born Digital Wine Awards winners on Wednesday and a launch of the EWBC Digital Wine Communications Conference accompanied by some fabulous Turkish wines supplied by our 2012 sponsor, Wines of Turkey, on Thursday. The Vrazon team looks forward to welcoming everyone, with free wifi for sharing your #LIWF and wine thoughts and a great place to network with a range of bloggers, digital communicators and other wine trade professionals.

Come and taste uniquenessAustrian Wine to highlight diversity with seminar series at LIWF

Austria’s outstanding grape varieties and an in-depth look at the “Archetypes of Austrian Wines” will be featured in a series of wine tasting seminars at the London International Wine Fair 2012.

A daily seminar on the “Archetypes of Austrian Wines”, including Austria’s prized indigenous grape varieties and their typical origins will be held at this year’s LIWF at the spacious Austrian stand I50 and J50. The seminars will be presented by Austrian wine specialist Jason Turner, who will present tutored tastings of the wines and wine regions of Austria. These shall be held in the special tasting area amongst the 28 Austrian wineries and sparkling producers presenting their wines at the fair.

The seminars will highlight all indigenous grape varieties, such as the black grapes Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, Sankt Laurent, alongside Austria’s signature white wine variety Grüner Veltliner, and their typical origins. These seminars will be held daily at 11 am in a designated tasting area at the Austrian wine pavilion. In addition to the seminars, there will be themed Austrian wine tastings held daily at the Wine Bar of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board Stand, as well as a presentation featuring the renowned Austrian glass maker, Riedel on Thursday at 1 pm.

The strong presence of Austrian wineries at this year’s LIWF, combined with the series of seminars, underscores the continued growing interest and success of Austrian wines in the international arena. These hand-crafted wines are sought after for their unique, food-friendly varieties and styles, and come from some of the world’s most distinctive terroirs. Producers from across Austria’s wine-growing regions will be personally represented at the LIWF – from the Wachau, Kremstal and Kamptal in the Danube Valley to Burgenland in the east and Steiermark (Styria) to the south.

Ch Musar at the LIWF

The key to the complex character of Chateau Musar Red is time: from harvest to release each vintage spends a full seven years gently developing (via vat, barrel and bottle) in the Hochar family’s 18th century cellar north of Beirut. So this year’s LIWF sees the launch of the 2005, made from organically-produced grapes slowly ripened to perfection through a mild Bekaa Valley summer. This mellow, spicy wine benefits from decanting and measured appreciation. By contrast, the unoaked Musar Jeune wines, in Red, White and Rosé, offer appealing immediacy, their intense fruit flavours reflecting their high-altitude origins and wholly natural winemaking.

Serge, Ronald, Ralph, Marc and Gaston Hochar, together with winemaker Tarek Sakr will be at stand Q64 (and a series of Masterclasses on Wednesday) to present all the current Musar wines including Hochar Pere et Fils Red 2007 alongside a range of Chateau Musar older vintages.

We are really excited to be exhibiting at the Fair again this year,” says Madeleine Waters who runs the Wines of Lebanon campaign in the UK. “Last year was about introducing people to the concept of Lebanon as a wine-producing country and we received a lot of interest. Over the last 12 months, we have run tastings and masterclasses throughout the UK to give the trade more insight into Lebanese wines and the people behind them. This year we want to encourage people to take a closer look at Lebanon and the diverse range of wines produces.”

2012 Wine Faults WorkshopREDUCTION – where have all the flavours gone?

It’s often hard to put a finger on why a wine loses it’s ‘zing’..... difficult to identify reductive aromas, the tell-tale sign that what’s in the bottle has dulled. But what is ‘reduction? How is it caused? And how can you spot it – at different stages?

These are questions that occupy the minds of the whole wine trade, from wine makers to retailers and sommeliers. So come along on Wednesday 23rd May to the Wine Faults Workshop, conducted by well-known wine scientist Pascal Chatonnet, where he will examine the problem of reduction both scientifically – and practically with wines in the glass.

Sponsored by Amorim, the world’s largest cork producer, this Workshop is one of a regular series at successive London International Wine Fairs that takes a factual look at the various faults that can be found in wine. And the reasons they occur.

There will be two sessions this year at London International Wine Fair at ExCel, both held in South Gallery Room 13. The first runs from 10.30am to 12 noon, and the second from 2.30 to 4pm.

Entry is free, but only by tickets issued in advance, as space is limited. To book your place, contact Fiona Campbell on [email protected] or telephone 01225 782095.

Provence wine shows its true colours

Wines from three appellations, Côtes de Provence, Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence and Coteaux Varois en Provence will be offered for a free tasting by Provence wines at this year’s London International Wine fair.

This is a great opportunity to sample some high-quality and versatile Provence rosé wines, as well as red and white, and meet producers from Château Henri Bonnaud, Château Saint Pierre and Château La Mascaronne.

For the first time Provence wines will also be exhibiting rosé magnums, which are enjoying an increase in consumption.

Also of interest to visitors will be the rosé colour scale which aims to help both

professionals and consumers to precisely describe the colour of a rosé wine. Gooseberry, Peach, Grapefruit, Cantaloupe, Mango and Mandarin are the six names that have been attributed to the six colours which best represent those rose wines from the region. This has been created by the Rosé Wine Experimentation and Research Centre in co-operation with the Provence Wine. It is useful not only for professionals looking to determine precise colour characteristics for their wines, but also for many consumers who would like to share their feelings about a wine they’ve tasted by putting their thoughts into words.

Now in its fifth year, LIWF and TastingBuddy have firmly established The List as the world’s largest searchable wine database used at any trade event.

Thousands of visitors each year use The List to find specific wines to match their specific business needs: plugging gaps in wine lists; increasing the number of lower alcohol wines; responding to the growing demand for rosé; or simply sourcing that wonderful gem yet to be discovered.

Faced with an ocean of wine – some 25,000 bottles – The List enables you to whittle down those thousands of wines into a concise, bespoke list that fits your needs. Most importantly it allows you to browse all those wines in advance and decide which you want to taste at the Fair.

You can search using a range of drop down search criteria, including: country; region; grape variety; price point; organic; ABV; style and closure. This means that if you are looking for, say, an £8.99 organic Sauvignon with a screwcap, you can create a search fitting these criteria, and produce a personalised tasting trail which plots the location of each wine on the online interactive floorplan. The List is now live at www.londonwinefair.com
