Striking a perfect balance between technical education & soft skills is the need of time. In the eraof globalization, engineering students need to enhance their English communication skills andother soft skills in order to cope with the increasingly tough competition in the job market. Keep-ing this in mind, we have included a course in Soft Skills right from the first year. In addition tothis, the students are also trained for the international examinations like GESE (GRADED Examin-ations in Spoken and English) by Trinity College, London.
Everybody encounters problems in his/her personal, social, academic and professional life. Ourchairperson Dr. Tarita Shankar has created a platform for the members in her Indira family whereshe listens to the problems of people and try to guide them in solving them. The CARE Club launc-hed by the chairperson of Indira Group of Institutes, Dr. Tarita Shankar, is an innovative initiativetaken by her where the students as well as the staff members of Indira Group of Institutes are able
Indira College of Engineering and Management (ICEM) was established in 2007 under the aegis of ShreeChanakya Education Society. to seek her guidance and benefit from her rich experience of life. Being a voracious reader herself, Dr. Shankarunderstands the importance of reading in the development of students. Hence, she has also started a 'bookclub' for the students who are interested in reading. Tarita ma'am herself conducts the book club session twicea month at ICEM. The students spend two hours reading a book of their choice and at the end of the sessionsummarize the book they have read and discuss about the book with other participants.
It is rightly said that “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.' We, at ICEM, aim for the holistic developmentof our students. We believe in equipping them with all the tools to fight the battle in the professional groundahead of them & emerge victorious in their fields of choice. Hence, ICEM arranges 'Avishkar' every year. Thefestival helps the students to present their skills in technical field, arts, sports and other intrinsic qualities. Thestudents at Indira utilize these opportunities available to them on the campus every year and evolve ascompetent and balanced professionals at the end of their respective courses.

FROM THECHAIRPERSON’S DESK The haze of uncertainty over India's growth story is at last seen to be lifting. Rate of GDP growth in the past year, is nothing short of encou-raging and it may not be too ambitious to envision a double digit growth in the next few years. Widely predicted to overtake China's rate of the past 30 years, it carries a lot of meaning for students inthe country. More growth will mean more industries, services, highertechnology, greater accent on faster communication, and disseminati-on of information – especially in critical areas like agriculture. Andthis will require qualified and knowledgeable manpower to guide thecountry on its way.
DR. TARITA SHANKARCHAIRPERSONINDIRA GROUP OF INSTITUTES
Welcome to Indira Group. Welcome to ICEM.
The growth story of India has not come as a surprise to Indira Group. With the need for more and more qualified manpower, Indira College of Engineering and Management was set up in 2007 for exactly the purpose it is serving so well today. From being the baby of the Indira Group Family in 2007, in the space of just 8 years ICEM has claimed its rightful place among the 50 best Engineering Institutions in the coun-try ranked by some of the best known agencies in the business. Also,it has become a flag bearer of engineering and management talent throughout India with its successful and prize winning efforts at all-India competitions with IVY League institutions and presentations on the some of the most complex technical subjects. Today, ICEM is among the most respected Engineering institutions in the country, thanks to the never ending effort of all stakeholders – the faculty, staff and students who have proven their worth time and again. Be it any branch of engineering, the college has some of the best in class infrastructure to take you to the heights of achievement that you aspire for. A visit to the website of ICEM will bring home the enormousvalue that ICEM is building for the students, where academics is but apart of the total education effort – the CARE Club, Book Club, ScholarClub etc are forums that ensure you get to grow into a full-fledged,total personality that you could be proud of in your ambition to be atthe helm of India's growth story.

SOFT SKILLS In the era of globalization, engineering students need to enhance their English communication skills and other soft skills in order to cope with the increasingly tough competition in the job market. Multinational corporations (MNCs) and major information technology (IT) companies in India recruit engineering candidates who have good English communication skills. In this highly competitive world, proficiency in English is considered one of the employability skills. In other words, English communication skills are considered 'life skills' or 'survival skills' in the twenty-first century.
We, at Indira College of Engineering and Management (ICEM), understand that it is an era of innovation that ourstudents step into after completing their educational stint with us. Hence we believe in equipping them with all the tools to fight the battle in the professional ground ahead of them & emerge victorious in their fields of choice.
Striking a perfect balance between technical education & soft skills is the need of time. Such skills includecommunication, cooperation, creativity, leadership, and organization. Keeping this in mind, we have included a course in Soft Skills right from the first year.
First year engineering students are trained in the basics of English communication skills where they are encouraged to speak in English. They are also exposed to other soft skills like team work, politeness principle etc.
The second year engineering students are exposed to the formal register of English language as a part of their softskills training. Along with spoken English, they are also trained in formal writing, i.e., formal letters and formal emails. They are given tasks to hone and practice different soft skills.
The third year engineering students receive soft skills training required for placements. The students are exposed to various group discussion topics and personal interview questions. They are also trained in writing CV and covering letter.
The engineering students need to be able to think critically, solve problems, communicate clearly, be creative andwork in a team in order to get placed in a reputed company. Thus, good English communication skills have become a sine qua non for professionals to create a successful career. The students should utilize such opportunities available to them on the campus which certainly helps them broaden their horizons and have a successful career.

INNOVATIVE CLUBS AT ICEMThe chairperson of Indira Group of Institutes, Dr. Tarita Shankar established Shree Chanakya Education Society in the year 1994 when she realized that the core of India's development issue lies in providing much needed education to its youth. Dr. Tarita Shankar is an excellent orator, renowned for her free, frank and fearless expression of her views. She loves to travel and has explored all major countries in the world. Her love for travelling and reading coupled with the rich experiences in her life has transformed her into a dynamic person she is now. She has been an evangelist for social good throughout her illustrious career. This includes assistance to students, physically handicapped and orphaned children, senior citizens etc. She is known for her out-of-the-box thinking and innovative ideas. Someone has rightly said, “It is not about ideas. It is about making ideas happen.” She has transformed her creative ideas into innovative forums like Scholar Club, CARE club and Book club for the holistic development of the students.
21st century engineers need versatile skills and ability to perform in different conditions. We, at Indira College ofEngineering & Management, aim to develop and nurture these versatile skills of our students for their holisticdevelopment through intensive training. ICEM has introduced the innovative concept of the Scholar Club in order to enhance the employability of the students. The students are selected for scholar club based on their past performance in academics. They are given exceptional inputs in academic excellence, interpersonal skills enhancement, entrepreneurship, career awareness, work etiquette, communication skills, presentation skills, problem solving techniques, leadership skills and innovative thinking skills. This scholar club programme is sponsored by the Management. The students selected for this program receive specialized training related to their respective domain subjects and soft skills.
The scholar club students are also given placement-oriented training such as training for Aptitude Test, GroupDiscussions and Personal Interviews. These students are encouraged to take the international certification in English i.e. GESE (Graded Examinations in Spoken English) by Trinity College, London every year. In this highly competitive world, English language skills are considered 'life skills' or 'survival skills.' This initiative aims to make the students more employable so that they can cope with the increasingly tough competition in the job market. The management also encourages some of the faculty members to take this exam and trains them for the same. The students at ICEM utilize this opportunity available to them on the campus which certainly helps them broaden their horizons and have a successful career.
SCHOLAR CLUB
CARE club is an Innovative initiative by our Honorable Chairperson, Dr. Tarita Shankar for Indiraites. She launched the CARE club on 25th July 2013 on the occasion of the induction programme of the MBA students at Indira GlobalBusiness School.
It is an innovative initiative taken by Dr. Shankar where the students as well as the staff members of Indira Group of Institutes will be able to seek her guidance and benefit from her rich experience of life. She says, “My dream of doing this started when I meet students with varied problems and fears and directionless each day… I plan to counsel at least 10 students per week on a one to one basis …helping them transform into better and caring human beings adding happiness in society!”
CARE CLUBC- Counsel A- Advise R- Rise E- Evolve

This club is open to all Indira members. It is said that the best giftyou can give to people is time. Tarita ma'am herself is available for counseling the people. Everybody encounters problems in his/her personal, social, academic and professional life. These problems lead to stress and anxiety in our life. It is a common experience that we are not able to achieve our full potential due our stressful lives. One of the English proverbs says, “A problem shared is halved.” We all have desire to express our deepest concerns with someone we can confide in. Our chairperson Dr. Tarita Shankar has created a platform for the members in her Indira family where she listens to the problems of people and try to guide them in solving them.
BOOK CLUBReading a the doorway into the mind of the world's greatest thinkers. It is rightly said that “The hand that puts down the book is a different hand.” Being a voracious reader herself, Dr. Shankar understands the importance of reading in the development of students. Hence, she has started a 'book club' for the students who are interested in reading. A book club is a group of people who meet to discuss a book or books that they have read and express their opinions, likes, dislikes, etc. Tarita ma'am herself conducts the book club session twice a month at ICEM. The students spend two hours reading a book of their choice and at the end of the session summarize the book they have read and discuss about the book with the other participants.
The following are the objectives of the book club:
• To encourage reading among students• To make reading a social experience as well as an individual activity• To develop the ability to express of ideas and feelings• To encourage critical thinking• To develop the feeling of belonging to a group, being respected, and treating other group members with respect• To bond with other students of similar age or cross-generational• To give students time for reflection and introspection• To give students time for sharing• To give students time for exploration• To give students a chance to see others in a new way• To give students an opportunity to see literature in a new way
In order to carry out this activity smoothly and effectively, our hon'ble chairperson hasdonated near about 300 books i.e. fiction, non- fiction, Auto- biographies and more to the library which is displayed as a Chairperson's Corner in the reading hall. The collection also includes the books of great authors like Arches, Jeffrey; Child, Lee; Datta, Durjoy; Murty,Sudha; and so on.
The book club students were also taken to the Crossword where Tarita ma'am gifted books to the members of the book club of their own choice.
