AT VIENNA
Dr. M. Ravi Kant, Joint Sectretary, Ministry of Power,
Government of India and Shri V.V. Pattanshetti, Scientific
Officer Gr.5, CPRI visited UNIDO, Vienna, Austria from
10.05.2010 to 13.05.2010 to present the progress of the project
to the Board of Directors representing various countries in
UNIDO.
UNIDO, Vienna, Austria, in its mission of environmentally Sound
Management of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP) has
awarded a project to India, wherein quantification and its
ultimate disposal is envisaged.
The project is being executed by Ministry of Environment and
Forests (MoEF). Central Power Research Institute has been
identified as nodal organization for eliminating Poly Chlorinated
Biphenyl (PCB one of Persistent Organic Pollutants), part of the
project in India. The project “National Implementation Plan for
Environmentally sound management of Poly Chlorinated
Biphenyls in India”, with an outlay of Rs. 100 Lakhs was
awarded to the institute in January 2009 and to be completed by
December 2010.

Party Independent Evaluation Agency – Energy
Accounting (TPIEA-EA)” under Restructured-
Accelerated Power Development and Reforms
Programme (R-APDRP) of the Ministry of Power, Govt.
of India for the State of Karnataka. The duration of the
assignment is 6 years.
CPRI, as TPIEA-EA shall carry out energy accounting
and verification of Administrative, Technical &
Commercial (AT & C) losses for all the ESCOMs of
Karnataka covering 102 towns in the entire state. CPRI
has to establish and verify the baseline AT&C loss
figures and also verify the annual AT&C loss figures for
these identified project areas as per the guidelines
issued by M/s. Power Finance Corporation which is the
nodal agency for R-APDRP.
The job involves extensive field visit to the substations
and the project areas for establishing and verification of
the necessary data.

“Design and Development of Smart Grid Pilot
Project in BESCOM”. The assignment was bagged
by CPRI. This is for the first time that a Pilot Project
on 'Smart grid' is being conceived in an Indian
Power Utility. CPRI has been chosen to be the

TESTING OF DISTRIBUTION TRANSFORMERS FOR BANGLADESHCPRI, Bangalore tested single phase and three phase Distribution Transformers (of ratings 5kVA, 15kVA, 35
kVA, 50kVA, 75 kVA, 100kVA - 1 F and 16 kVA, 25 kVA and 100 kVA - 3 ) for a leading Transformer
manufacturing company in Bangladesh. The tests conducted on the Distribution Transformers include
Dynamic Ability to Short Circuit test, Impulse test, Temperature rise test and Air pressure tests. The testing
has been completed at Short Circuit and High Voltage laboratories of CPRI during May/Jun2010. The
customer from Bangladesh was in CPRI, Bangalore for witnessing the testing activity.

SHORT CIRCUIT TEST FACILITY REFURBISHED
The 50MVA short circuit test facility has been
refurbished. The new system has modern AC drive
controls for the Motor and Static excitation for the
generator field with a feedback system. With this,
the laboratory can carryout tests at 50Hz & 60Hz
frequency. The new system is now operational and
commercial tests are being carried out. This set up
would help to speed up testing.

Tower testing station of CPRI which was established first
time in the country during 1976 has reached a new era in the
field of Testing of transmission line towers, aerial masts,
communication towers and Steel poles with unique facilities
having 78m height crane to facilitate safe and fast erection
of towers and fully automated Tower Testing operation using
PLC and SCADA. So far 485 numbers of towers have been
tested successfully in CPRI. This is a great contribution to
Power sector. The facility caters to testing new UHV
transmission with 765kV/800kV AC and 800kV HVDC
ratings. The land mark contribution to India is by Testing of
400 and 800 kV AC/HVDC Towers when such transmission
system was introduced first time in the country. The facility is
being augmented for catering to futuristic demand up to
1200kV HVAC transmissions system. Following are the
salient features of the new facilities added.
1. Automation of Tower Testing Station (TTS):
To compete with new generation Tower Testing Stations in
India the TTS of CPRI is fully automated with the facility
using PLC and SCADA for smooth control of testing. The
facility has the flexibility of switch changing mechanism
between Auto/Semi-Auto/ Manual modes. In addition to the
above facility for 3-channel video camera is installed in the
control room to record and monitor the test tower during
testing. This facility is very much useful especially for
analysing premature failures of the towers. It will be a good
tool for the purpose of analysis of failures especially to adopt
remedial measures in design before re-testing.
2. Tower Crane
The equipment facilitates the faster erection and dismantling of test tower and structures in addition to ensuring reliable and safe performance of activity. The advantages enable catering to more customers than before by way of reduction of total time involved in the entire activity of testing.

NEW FACILITIES ADDED FOR TESTING TOWERS

CPRI has signed an MoU with M/s.Crompton Greaves Ltd.,
Mumbai, on 16th June, 2010, for joint execution of the
approved National Perspective Plan (NPP) project tilted
“Development of HTS based Fault Current Limiter (FCL)” at
CCAR, CPRI, Bangalore. M/s.Crompton Greaves Ltd.,
Mumbai is the Project Implementing Organisation of the
above NPP Project. While welcoming the delegation,
Director General, CPRI, emphasized the importance of
such projects in the context of present power
sector scenario. Dr. J J Patel, Vice President - Global
R&D, Crompton Greaves, attended the meeting.

application characteristics of 2nd generation superconductor
to 'Design and development of High Temperature
Superconducting Fault Current Limiter' by understanding the

main objective as to Design and develop 11kV, 1250A, 3-
phase Superconductor Fault Current Limiter, for
implementation in Indian Power Sector.

For the first time, CPRI has carried out GPS synchronized End-To-End testing of Distance Protection
schemes on Hoody-HAL 220 kV feeder & Hoody-Nelamangala 400 kV feeder. The project study was
carried out by Power System Group of CPRI.

1. Automation of Tower Testing Station (TTS):
To compete with new generation Tower Testing Stations in
India the TTS of CPRI is fully automated with the facility
using PLC and SCADA for smooth control of testing. The
facility has the flexibility of switch changing mechanism
between Auto/Semi-Auto/ Manual modes. In addition to the
above facility for 3-channel video camera is installed in the
control room to record and monitor the test tower during
testing. This facility is very much useful especially for
analysing premature failures of the towers. It will be a good
tool for the purpose of analysis of failures especially to adopt
remedial measures in design before re-testing.
2. Tower Crane
The equipment facilitates the faster erection and dismantling of test tower and structures in addition to ensuring reliable and safe performance of activity. The advantages enable catering to more customers than before by way of reduction of total time involved in the entire activity of testing.

CPRI has signed an MoU with M/s.Crompton Greaves Ltd.,
Mumbai, on 16th June, 2010, for joint execution of the
approved National Perspective Plan (NPP) project tilted
“Development of HTS based Fault Current Limiter (FCL)” at
CCAR, CPRI, Bangalore. M/s.Crompton Greaves Ltd.,
Mumbai is the Project Implementing Organisation of the
above NPP Project. While welcoming the delegation,
Director General, CPRI, emphasized the importance of
such projects in the context of present power
sector scenario. Dr. J J Patel, Vice President - Global
R&D, Crompton Greaves, attended the meeting.

The main objectives of the Research project is to Study
application characteristics of 2nd generation superconductor
to 'Design and development of High Temperature
Superconducting Fault Current Limiter' by understanding the
basics of the phenomena of super-conductivity through
literature, experiments and generating design guidelines with
main objective as to Design and develop 11kV, 1250A, 3-
phase Superconductor Fault Current Limiter, for
implementation in Indian Power Sector.

For the first time, CPRI has carried out GPS synchronized End-To-End testing of Distance Protection

END-TO-END TESTING OF TRANSMISSION LINE PROTECTION

UHV research laboratory, Hyderabad has established facilities for conducting dielectric tests, RIV test and corona test on High-Voltage equipment of rating up to 1200 kV. Recently, UHVRL conducted Radio Interference Voltage and Corona Inception and Extinction Voltage tests on 765 kV Power Connectors of M/s. Klemmen Engineering Corporation, Chennai during June 2010. The test setup is shown in figure below. The power connectors consisted of:
1) Expansion type terminal connector to suit 120 mm outer diameter aluminium tube on transformer
2) Expansion type terminal connector to suit 120 mm outer diameter aluminium tube on isolator
3) Rigid type terminal connector to suit 120 mm outer diameter aluminium tube on isolator
4) Rigid / sliding type terminal connector to suit 120 mm outer diameter aluminium tube on bus post insulator
UHVRL SUCCESSFULLY CONDUCTS RIV AND CORONA TESTS ON 765 kV POWER CONNECTORS

The above connectors were mounted on two 800 kV support insulators of 5.5 m height supported on two metal structures of 8.0 m height. RIV test was conducted as per customer's request following procedure specified in IEC: 60437. Corona test was conducted as per customer's procedure.

Shri. N. Murugesan, Director General, visited Seoul, South Korea as a member of Indian delegation lead by thShri. Bharat Sinh Solanki, Hon'ble Union Minister of State for Power along with IEEMA Members during 11 to
th14 May, 2010. The delegation had discussions with KEPCO, KERI and visited the KERI Laboratories at
Changwon, Korea. The main theme of the delegations' deliberations was Smart Grids being implemented in
Korea and related issues.
