From our Clergy Team

My reflection this week is rather brief, and it’s not because I’m slacking.
Sometimes, a few words can provide plenty of food for thought. My
ponderings are inspired by some familiar words. If you’ve ever listened
to Msgr. Ron Lengwin on his weekly Sunday evening radio program,
Amplify, he always ends his show by saying, “May you feel the warmth
of God’s love in your life this day! May it be for you a gentle and joy
filled day.” While we’ve had a few temperate days throughout the winter
months, warmth is something that we’ve been longing for over the past
few week. Maybe we snuggle under a blanket, put on a thick sweater or
turn up the thermostat on our heater. Yet, I can’t help but think of those
who don’t have the luxury of finding that extra warmth so easily.

I pray each day as I encourage you to for all those who are served at the Red Door downtown,
those who seek shelter at Light of Life Rescue Mission, Saint Joseph’s House of Hospitality or the
emergency winter shelters, and especially for those who spend the long winter nights out in the cold.
While we may not be able to solve or provide for every instance of homelessness or poverty, we can
bring warmth to the hearts of those in need in some of the simplest ways. At times a homeless person
might go three or four weeks without someone calling them by name. Taking a few moments to get to
know someone who is in need and calling them by name can provide warmth and light for their heart
that surpasses any blanket or sweater. The most unlikely of relationships can form and the joy of God
wells up in all involved. God knows each of us by name and we have the responsibility to do the same.
May we be the instruments that give warmth, gentleness and joy to all we meet.

God bless!
Fr. Nick

BLESSING OF THROATS IN HONOR OF THE FEAST OF SAINT BLAISE

After all Masses next weekend, February 1 and 2, the blessing of throats will be offered to all who wish
to receive it. Saint Blaise, whose feast day is February 3, is the patron saint of diseases of the throat.
He is also revered as the patron saint of Dubrovnik, Croatia where a number of his relics can be found.
According to the Acts of Saint Blaise, a young child who was choking was cured through the prayers of
Saint Blaise. This blessing is especially timely as many suffer from throat ailments during the winter
months.

SPECIAL CANDLELIGHT MASS FOR THE FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD

On Saturday, February 1, there will be a special Candlelight Mass in the Strip District for the Vigil of the
Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. This feast is the unofficial end of the Christmas Season as it
marks the final mystery in the life of the child Jesus as Mary and Joseph present him in the temple, as
all Jewish families would have done with their firstborn son. It was at this time that Jesus is revealed by
the prophet Simeon as the Light of the Nations, and so the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is the
traditional day on which candles are blessed for use in churches.

The schedule will be as follows:
7:15 p.m. Gather at Old Saint Patrick Church (Liberty Avenue at 17
th
Street in the Strip)
7:30 p.m. Blessing of Candles and Candlelight Process to Saint Stanislaus Kostka
8:00 p.m. Solemn Mass for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord
