Queen Street Brisbane was a dirt road with hitching posts and horse troughs and one room shacks. Adelaide Street a wide track with deep gutters either side with wooden planks to cross them and reach the private homes on both sides of the street. The fi rst Victoria Bridge was under construction and James Swan was the twelfth Mayor of Brisbane. In this, the year 1873, Mr. Samuel Smith decided that Brisbane needed a fi rst-class manufacturer of rubber stamps.

135 years later, from that fi rst one-room business, on the corner of Adelaide and Edward streets, the Smith family carries on the tradition of quality manufacture. Now, the fi fth generation, family owned and managed, company has grown to become Australia’s largest signage manufacturer.

The company’s growth from 1873, then known as Smith & Sons Pty Ltd., later as Albert Smith Signs, and today known as Albert Smith Group, has been achieved by the Smith family’s commitment to manufacturing excellence, continued investment in research and development, and their strong desire to build a solid future for both their family and staff.

Quality systems and procedures were introduced in the Albert Smith workplace long before it was fashionable. The demand for Albert Smith’s quality products grew both locally and internationally, developing into successful export to Asia. Many of the standards and technologies within the sign industry today were pioneered by Albert Smith Signs.

Today, the Albert Smith Group is lead by Samuel Smiths great grandsons Rodney Smith, Managing Director, and Mitchell Smith, General Manager. The company proudly boasts manufacturing facilities in eight countries and the ASG customer base reads like the who’s who of the corporate world. This Australian family proudly carries on the tradition of their forebears and continues to run the business from the head offi ce in Brisbane.

global resources – local solutionsAlbert Smith attributes its ongoing success and growth internationally to the sharing and utilisation of the varied resources available to it from throughout the Albert Smith Group network. ASG has literally thousands of hours of experience to draw upon not only from a technical and business perspective but culturally also. This strength and fl exibility has proven invaluable to our company and, in turn, our customers. Thanks to the combined support of the Group we have been able to successfully manage the varying cultural issues that arise when rolling out a re-imaging program throughout the region. As the various projects listed below illustrates; the Groups strength offers us greater fl exibility, allowing us to better manage risks, whilst offering continuity of a dependable service globally. We can ensure high quality product backed up by the Albert Smith Group warranty, thereby enabling us to meet and/or exceed the objectives of our diversifi ed customer base.

New RCH Busway brings relief to commuters..24

Hi and welcome to the last AAI magazine for 2005.

Another year has flown by. Where do they go? I can remember the days when

a year actually took a year to pass, though that was back in the days before I

had an annual business plan to manage. Maybe that's the difference. In any

event, 2005 has produced many firsts and set some new records. In the

manufacturing world we have rarely experienced such movement in material

costs. Oil prices have sky rocketed costs of plastics and many paints, demand

for steel has surged prices, electronics have been effected and in some of our

plants, basics such as water, electricity and land taxes have leapt ahead. At

the same time, customers are demanding price relief. Ah, the joys of being a

manufacturer! We must however be responding well, as all plants are enjoy-

ing extremely buoyant sales. In Australia, November was the highest ever

recorded sales month in our 132 year history. We are obviously excited at the prospect of maintaining the same

momentum through 2006.

Albert Smith have enjoyed many highlights through 2005, including the opening of the new China facility, launch of

two new ASG divisions, record sales across the Group, launch of several new products, five year warranted and

maintained products in Australia, to mention only a few. 2006 will no doubt come with new highs and challenges,

however, due to the "hard yards" all at ASG have continued to put in, the Group has never been better prepared

for the future.

The Albert Smith team is of course a multi cultural group. With plants across Australia, New Zealand and throughout

Asia, we enjoy the benefits of the various cultures. For instance, two 'New Years' parties, different customs and foods,

the fun of rivalries between countries [including Kiwi v Aussie] and we especially enjoy the uniqueness and exclusivity

of our situation. By that I mean there is no other identity company in the Asia Pacific region [maybe the world] that is

even close to our 'offer'. For instance, who can offer ... uniform quality of manufacturing through seven plants,strate-

gically placed in the power areas of the global economy, innovative research and development, shared and spread

across these countries, benefits of competitive manufacture via integration of each ASG plant, operational and

individual strengths, multi lingual communication, guaranteed quality manufacture backed by 132 years of experience

and integrity, ongoing investment in technology insuring Albert Smith stay ahead of innovation. All capped off via

committed and trained teams who know exactly what identity is, no matter which ASG country you may call upon.

To say the least, I am extremely proud [some even say biased] of the Albert Smith family, in fact, almost as much as

I am, of our clients. Albert Smith customers include many of the worlds leading global brands, covering projects both

large and small. We also enjoy a huge spread of individual and smaller brand customers relying on Albert Smith to

meet their every need. We nurture and encourage all opportunities, consistently building on our experiences in our

efforts to offer even better services and products.

Maintaining and expanding our customer base is Albert Smith's most important goal. Without customers we have

nothing, and as such, from all of us at Albert Smith we want to thank you, our truly valued customers, for your

continued loyal support and confidence. Hopefully it has not happened too often; however, as manufacturing is not

always an exact science, we may have tested your patience at some point. If so, I doubly thank you for your under-

standing and look forward to when next we are able to serve you.

Well that's it from me for 2005, except to say have a Merry Xmas, a safe and happy new year, may 2006 deliver on

all your expectations.

See you next year! Regards,

quality

Albert Smith Group design, develop, manufacture, install and service commercial signage.

The quality and reliability of the company's products and services are the concern and responsibility of every person in our organisation.

Quality assurance encompasses every aspect of our business, each process in each department, from administration through to installation.

In-built quality starts with research and development and continues right through design, project management, production, installation and maintenance, every section has quality related responsibilities.

Each work centre is responsible for manufacturing and providing the scheduled quality, in the required time in accordance with the planned estimate and also at the required quality level. Consequently a 'Do it right the fi rst time' approach is the key to quality, cost reduction, productivity and customer satisfaction.

To help achieve this objective, quality problems arising in various areas are to be identifi ed and solved with speed, technical effi ciency, and economy. The methods employed are kept continually under review and techniques improved whenever and wherever necessary.

'Quality Assurance' means exactly what it implies: assurance that quality is satisfactory when compared with the reference standard or specifi cation by using testing, sampling or other accredited methods. The company requires such assurance before goods can be supplied to the customer.

The above broad principles are basic to this company for the assurance of product and service quality, and ultimately customer satisfaction.

Albert Smith Group has a strong belief that the only way to achieve a successful outcome on any signage project, is to 'manage' the project. Whilst that may sound simplistic, we do more than just talk about the process, we rely on it, for the successful execution of your project.

Successful management of any project begins with careful planning. This investment in planning in the early stages starts with the use of a detailed MRP system for our estimating process followed by material procurement, comprehensive material schedules preparation, and assembly of Project Management Team personnel.

The Project Management Team consists of project specifi c, Project Managers, supported by the Procurement Offi cer, the original Estimating & Design personnel, QA Offi cer, Operations and Logistics Managers and Installation Management team. As the team get to work… the real work begins, with the design team committing the details required to Working Drawings, for customer approval.

With approval of the Working Drawings and the project timeline, in hand, our Project Management team bring our Operations people into play, while our Installation Management team begin the site establishment process. The site teams task is often complex with multiple reporting functions required, and it is essential that the highest level of security and Occupational Health & Safety is implemented to meet all regulatory and site specifi c requirements and that they maintain a fully auditable reporting trail for the protection and peace of mind of our valued customer.

Project Management are responsible for implementing and maintaining site and project specifi c controls and measures, such as: Occupational Health & Safety Management Plan encompassing; Site Safety Management Plan including Security; Contractor Induction Training; Quality Assurance & Audit Programme; Traffi c Control

Asset Management; Customer liaison and reporting; Subcontractor and specialist services co-ordination and management; Statutory and Union management.

safe delivery of product locally, nationally and internationally Safe packaging and freight consignment management is paramount to the success of any signage project, whether the delivery point is 10 or 10,000km from the despatch point.

Following many years and thousands of cubic metres of experience, in the right (and the wrong) way to approach this task, we fully understand the most cost effective and reliable methodology to ensure the freight arrives on time, in 'one piece'. Taking into consideration all relevant issues such as; ensuring the goods are received at the other end in the right confi guration for goods lifting and access restrictions, Customs inspections and clearances, Line of Credit facilitation and administration – nothing is overlooked.

Whether we are forwarding one piece of glass neon tube or a 20 metre pylon packing a small door sign or economically packing a 12 metre container to maximise the cubic, whether we are sending it across the street or sending it around the world, Albert Smith Group have the proven experience and the know how to do it right.
