THEWOMENThroughtheiradventures,contributionstoadvocacyefforts,artsandentertainment,conservation,education,literature,media,sport,andSTEMresearch,thesewomenhaveimpactedourpastandpresent.Selectedfromalonglistofnomineesresearchedandsubmittedbymembers,theirfriendsandcolleagues,thereweretwocriteriathatpareddownthelist.ThefirstisthattheyeitheroriginatedorcametotheMarkham-Torontoregion.Thesecondisthattheydidsomethinginteresting,eitherone-timeorlifelong,thatsparkedawe, joy, laughter, and lively debate.While they all accomplished different things, the circumstances inwhich they lived is notdissimilartoourown.

WhenKathleenMcKaymetFredVarley,sheformedalife-longfriendship with the artist and an appreciation for Canadianmodernart.WhenVarleybecameill,Kathleenandherhusbandinvitedhimto livewith them.Theyeventuallymoved intoherfamilyhome,theSalem-EckhardthouseonUnionville’shistoricMainStreet,andconvertedthebasementintoanartstudioforVarley.KathleenlatersoldthehousetotheTownofMarkham.Upon her death, the remainder of her Estate, including anextensiveartcollection,wasbequeathedtotheTown.

HelenSawyerHoggwasanastronomerwhopioneeredresearchintoglobularclustersandvariablestars.Shewasthefirstfemalepresident of several astronomical organizations and a notablewoman of science at a timewhenmany universitieswould notawardscientificdegreestowomen.WorkingattheDDOandtheUniversityofToronto,Helenalsobroughtastronomytothemassesin her Toronto Star column, With the Stars, and activelyencouragedwomentopursuecareersinscience.

Mary Ann Shadd Cary, was an American-Canadian anti-slaveryactivist,journalist,lawyer,publisher,andteacher.ShewasthefirstBlack female publisher in North America and the first femalepublisherinCanada.Hernewspaper,TheProvincialFreeman,wascirculatedonbothsidesoftheborder.BorntofreeparentswhohelpedslavesescapetheUSviatheUndergroundRailroad,MaryAnnadvocatedimmigrationtoCanada.

JuneCallwood,wasajournalist,writer,andsocialjusticeactivist.She helped found over 50 organizations, including youth andwomen’s shelters, CaseyHouse, PEN Canada, and the CanadianCivilLibertiesAssociation.

Allison Dore is the founder of Howl & Roar, a female-centriccomedyrecordlabelaimedatempoweringartistsandfacilitatingcontentforwomenandunderrepresentedperformersincomedy.

Lilly Singh is a motivational speaker, performer, YouTubecomedian and vlogger. From female empowerment to anti-bullying initiatives, Lilly’s wide reaching influence is effectingchange.

Bobbie Rosenfeld, was named Canada’s female athlete of the half-century (1900–1950). She won two medals at the 1928 SummerOlympicsandexcelledatbasketball,icehockey,softball,andtennis.

In1924,AdaMackenziefulfilledadreamtocreatetheLadies’GolfClubofToronto.Achampiongolfer,Adacouldn’tgetaccesstoweekendteetimeandpracticeopportunities.Withbackers’moneyandastellargolfarchitectonboard,Adapurchasedthefarmlandandgot itdone.AtNorthAmerica’sonlyactiveprivategolfclubestablishedbywomenforwomen,menarewelcometoo.

OneofthefirsttwowomentobeinductedintotheHockeyHallofFame,AngelaJamesovercamemanyobstaclestopioneer women’s hockey. She first played organizedhockey in a boys’ house league and led the league inscoring, but her right to play ended when the league’sPresident instigated an official policy to ban girls. Aversatile star in the sport, Angela won four Women’sWorld Championship gold medals for Canada but wasdeniedtheopportunitytoplayattheOlympics.

Laura Fortino has been a player on Canada’s nationalwomen’s hockey team since 2008, earning an OlympicgoldmedalattheSochiWinterGamesin2014,andasilvermedalatthePyeongChangWinterGamesin2018.LauraisadefenseplayerfortheMarkhamThunderwhowere2018CWHLchampionsandwinnersoftheClarksonCup.

ElsieMacGillwas a polio survivor. Contracting polio before shegraduated from the University of Toronto with a degree inelectricalengineering,shewastoldshewouldspendtherestofherlife in a wheelchair. Refusing to settle for that prognosis, sherelearnedhowtowalkwithtwometalcanes.Aftershequalifiedasanaeronauticalengineer,ElsieoversawtheCanadianproductionoftheHawkerHurricanefighterplanesduringtheSecondWorldWar. She devoted time advocating women's rights and wasappointed to theRoyal Commissionon the StatusofWomen inCanada.

Hilda Macmorine was a supervising technician at ConnaughtMedicalResearchLaboratories(nowSanofiPasteurCanada).Shewas part of the Canadian research team that successfullycultivated thepoliovirus in largequantities.Usingwhat becameknownasthe“TorontoMethod”,thepolioviruswasculturedinasynthetic solution of "Medium 199" and monkey kidney cellsstoredinlargePovitskybottlesandincubatedonaspecialrockingmachine.ThatsuccessledtothesafeproductionoftheSalkpoliovaccineandtheneareradicationofpolioworldwide.

This fused sextet shows ElsieMacGill and the aircraft that impacted theoutcomeoftheSecondWorldWar,thepoliovirusinvariousforms,andHildaMacmorinesupervisingitsproduction.

CeciliaKriegerwasthefirstwomaninCanadatoearnaPhDinmathematics.While she was a strong supporter of women inmathematics, her generation faced barriers working at theUniversityofTorontoaftertheymarriedandfewwerepromoted.Ceciliaremainedadedicatedinstructorandresearcherwithouteverreceivingaprofessorship.

KatieRicestudiedastronomy,mathematics,andphysicsattheUniversityofToronto.Movingoutwest,shechangedcareersandturned to homesteading. As women were not yet consideredlegalpersons,sheenlistedherbrothertopurchaseproperty inManitoba.While farming,sheheardofgoldfinds intheregionand started staking claims.With the assistance of Cree guideswhotaughthertheirlanguageandhuntingandsurvivalskills,shefoundzinc,copper,andnickeldeposits. Thissix-panelfusedpiecefeatureseachpersonandsymbolsassociatedwiththeirtruth.

Amanda Strong is an innovativeMichif stop-action filmmakerand major contributor to indigenous cinema. Her films havebroughtoraltraditiontolife.Whetherexploringdarkchaptersin Canadian history or spotlighting environmental issues, herworkfindstruthinitstelling.

OlivineBousquet-TiedemawasAmandaStrong’sgrandmother.She in turn was granddaughter to Napoleon Bousquet adefender of Métis land rights and freedoms. An advocate ofMétisculture,OlivinehelpedfoundtheMétisNationofOntario(MNO)TorontoandYorkRegionMétisCouncil,Oshawa-DurhamRegionMétisCouncilandCreditRiverMétisCouncil,andservedasanMNOSenator.

BeatriceWorsleyearnedthefirstPhDincomputerscienceandwasthefirstfemalecomputerscientistinCanada.Apioneerinthisfield,shecreatedananaloguecomputerfromMeccano.Shewentontoco-developTranscode,acomputermarkuplanguage,for Canada’s first electronic computer at the University ofToronto.

VioletMilsteadWarrenwasoneof fourfemaleCanadianstofly intheAirTransportationAuxiliary(ATA)duringtheSecondWorldWar,andwasitslongestservingCanadianfemalepilot.Sheferriedaircraftbetweenfactoriesandmilitaryzones.UpondischargefromtheATA,sheworkedasa flight instructorandbecameCanada’s first femalebushpilot.

MollyFentonBeallReillywastakingflyinglessonswhentheoutbreakofwargroundedcivilians.ShetriedenlistingintheRoyalCanadianAirForce(RCAF)tocompleteherpilotcertification,butwasrejecteddueto her gender. The ATA accepted women, butMolly couldn't joinwithoutapilot'slicense.Determinedtofindajobthatinvolvedflying,sheenlistedwiththeRCAFasaphotographer inthenewWomen'sDivision. She continuedworkingas anon-commissionedofficer fortheRCAFuntilafter thewar.Aftershewas finallyable toearnherprivatepilot'slicensesheobtainedhercommercialflightlicenseandpublic transport license. She became a charter pilot for SouthernProvincialAirlines.ShewasthefirstwomantoflyprofessionallytotheArctic,andassistedinthedevelopmentoftheairline’sairambulanceservice.MollylaterbecamechiefpilotforCanadianCoachwaysandthe first female corporatepilot in Canada. She loggedover 10,000flighthoursasapilot-in-command—withoutasingleaccident.

In1929,onadarefromtheirhusbands,EvaBullockandAnnieEdlundembarkedontheadventureofalifetime.Armedwithamap and no compass, the women mushed by dog sled fromEdlund,Ontario,1300kmsouthtoToronto,afeatthathadneverbeenaccomplished in recordedhistory.Battling theelements,surviving bear andwolf encounters, they trekked through thewildernessstoppinginsmallcommunitiesalongtheway.Oftenrescuedorshelteredbystrangers,theypassedthroughremoteFirst Nations territories and lumber camps. Their journeycaptured the attention of news outlets that reported theiradventuresastheyheadedtowardsToronto.Escortedbypolice,theytravelleddownYongeStreetthroughThornhilltoToronto.Thousandsofpeoplecheered theirarrivalatTorontoCityHallwheretheyweregreetedbythemayor.

A pioneer in special needs education, Lan Kwan Sum devisedcreativemethods for students to increase their academic anddevelopmentalabilities.Lanwasakeenhikerandnaturalist.Onher death, she left a generous bequest to the Bruce TrailConservancywhichenabledthemtopurchase18acresoflandtocreate the Lan Kwan Sum Nature Reserve, a habitat forindigenoustreesandplantspecies.

While a councillor for the town of Markham, Valerie Burkehelped bring the Butterflyway Project to the region. InconjunctionwiththeDavidSuzukiFoundation,severalreclaimedcanoes were planted by the community and local schoolchildren. Thornhill Meadow was transformed by the PomonaMills Park Conservationists and residents into an importantpollinatormeadowformonarchbutterflies.
