From The President

by Bill Jollie

It’s always amazing to me how much our club has going on at any given time. We’re moving into our 12th year and the board believes that we should begin recognizing members who have done the most for the club. So we voted to create a Hall of Fame com-mittee. I will set this up as soon as we write up the rules under which this will

be established. (I love this)

The board has updated the by-laws to reflect more closely how we operate. I recommend every-one, especially committee members, read them. A lot has changed and schedules have been added to them.

The most important thing that all members

should be considering, at this time, is who you will nominate to run for office. Make sure to choose wisely.

We’re less than a month away from getting

our first $300 strike. It’s time to send in your drawings for our 12th year coin. We’ll soon be selecting SOTY and HOF strikes. The previous is a short list of things going on. If I don’t see you this month I hope to see you in January. B Jollie

Changes Recently I received an e-mail from a former friend/club member who was going to re-join the club. He sent in his $10 annual dues to our membership VP Cheri Jollie who promptly notified him that there was an $8 processing fee for new members. This up-set him and he e-mailed me expressing his displeasure. The processing fee in part provides new members with a roster of all club members. I began to think about the processing fee and decided we do not need it. The board agreed and it no longer exists. If a new member wants a roster they can order one from Cheri Jollie. Remember, times change and so can our club. Re-cently, Jim Quinn suggested we update the by-laws and with Cheri taking the lead we did. I suggest that every member read the updated by-laws. Anyone with an idea or suggestion that could help the club should e-mail the Board. We are not opposed to change and look forward to your suggestions. B Jollie

Four Queens Tournament In an effort to be fair and give as many club members a chance to be at a Four Queens Tournament directed mainly at silver strikers, I asked Shaun Webster (Four Queens slot manager) if our club could choose the month that would best work for the majority of our members in place of the June tournament. Shaun agreed with one concern, if something was previously planned we would have to work around it. Here’s what I suggest. During the month of October every member who believes that they and or their partner/friend/child, etc. would attend a tournament, as suggested above, e-mail me with the month you would prefer and the number of people you believe would be in your party. I will collect the info and work with Shaun to see if it can happen. FYI The January tournament is still on and you may choose June if you wish. This is not a firm commitment and we would need at least 120 people on any given month. This would be a Four Queens event. B Jollie

It’s Time

Yes it’s time to update, change out, fix, or just replace the old with new. That’s right, nominations for your 2011/2012 Board of Directors is due by this December 23, 2010. You can’t stop time but you can change leadership. This year’s nominations committee is comprised of Carol Chrzanowski (Chairperson), Bob Chambers and Bill Metten committee members. Nominations of those who have agreed to run may be made by members in good standing for the office of President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. Send or call your nominations in to any committee member along with the name of the person who second the nomination. It’s very important to get nominations in early so ballots can be made and voting can take place for installation at our next convention. Carol’s phone number is (909) 882-1694 and her e-mail is [email protected]. B Jollie

Please Be Patient

E-mails and phone calls come in often to board members from club members, former club members and others who have business with our club. We try very hard to an-swer everyone quickly but it’s not always possible depending on timing. We meet usu-ally once a month and aren’t always home on a daily basis. Please be patient, we will get back to everyone who deserves an answer. B Jollie

2011 Club Strike Design Contest By Jo Reifer The contest went very well and we have a new logo for our club strike. If you haven’t purchased one it is not too late. We still have 24 left of the 2010 strikes and still a few of the 2009. The order form can be downloaded from our club web site. You can also email me and I will send you a form. We also will accept a hand written form. We need your name and address, and what year strike you want. Don’t forget to enclose your check. Jamie Martin will head the Design Contest Committee this next year. I will still computer enhance designs. If you want them done on computer send them to me and I will enhance them and send them back to you then you can submit them to Jamie. You must submit them to Jamie before they are entered into the contest. You have about six months until they have to be submitted. The deadline will be announced later but it is not too early to get started. This year will be the anniversary of our 12th year as the Silver Strikers Club. That will be the theme for the strike. If you have entered the contest in previous years and not won you can re-enter that idea making it for the 12th anniversary. It has been my pleasure to have worked with the Design Contest. For computer enhancement send to: Jo Riefer 2283 Panoramic Dr. Concord, CA 94520 [email protected]

SILVER STRIKES THEY ARE CHANGING

As the price of silver continues to rise so does the cost of silver strikes and our hobby has to change with it. First it was $10 clad with the $10 red caps only being silver. Now its a $300 one pound silver strike. The Four Queens released their $200 silver strike Queen of Dia-monds in August which turns out to be the last $200 one pound sil-ver strike minted. The Four Queens will be releasing the first $300

one pound silver strikes on Friday October 29, 2010. The Four Queens takes the honor of the last $200 and the first $300. Yes the new $300 require 30 $10 silver strike for the one pound $300 silver strike. How this will effect the strike program remains to be seen. The price of silver as I am writing this article is $22.06 an ounce. That's $264.72 for the silver in a one pound sil-ver strike, now consider the cost of the dye, artist fees, minting of the strike, blue box and cover plus shipping. As silver rises so does the cost of minting silver strikes but the value of our strikes also increase. How this will effect the collectors of the one pound silver strike remains to be seen with the first $300 one pound of silver strike to be released Friday Halloween week end. My money is on the collectors, from what I am hearing we are going to have a big group of collectors there for this release and I will bet money the new $300 will be gone within the first 30 minutes of release. Halloween is on the Sunday and its a full moon, what a week end its going to be. Hope to see you there Pam

Meet Ralph Bjornson: Silver Strike Pioneer by Bill Metten

Ninth in a series of articles about club members who started col-lecting strikes in the early days and have contributed to the club’s success. Silver Strikers Club Charter Member Ralph Bjornson (CHSS-0056) was present at the club’s founding/organization on June 17, 1999 at the Orleans in Las Vegas. Ralph’s wife Donna is also a Charter Member (CHSS-056-A). “We made many friends from the original group of collectors –

Dave Widlak, Dave and Rich Ruffel, Roger Bryant, Peter Van der Kar, Lloyd Malani, Gary Heinz, Dennis Finn, Clayton and Marylou Waterbury and many more,” Ralph says. Ralph played for $7.00 strikes when they first appeared, but he became a serious col-lector in 1993-1994 when the $10.00 silver strikes came out. “I thought, hey, these things are .999 silver and it sure was nice taking something home with me that I could collect and that had value,” he says. Ralph credits a fire chief from the Los Angelas area for getting him hooked on silver strikes and learning early on that strikes were available at many casinos and that it was easy to find collectors to trade with. “I collected all Nevada silver strikes until all the errors started coming out,” Ralph says. “At that point, I was missing only eight from having every Nevada strike of all denomi-nations.” Ralph and his wife decided not to pay the price for all the error strikes and in 2000 they decided to sell their collection, only keeping and collecting the strikes they liked. “My favorites are the $7.00 strikes so I kept the complete collection. I also have al-most all of the Colorado $7.00 strikes. I collect all silver strikes with casino buildings and all Silver Strikers Club and Club-related strikes. So I guess you could say that I still have a lot of those little puppies!” When eBay began in 1995 Ralph was one of the first to sell silver strikes on eBay. “I created a silver strike page, “he says, “with every Nevada silver strike listed and I kept it up diligently. If you queried “silver strikes” you would find Ralph’s web page listed. It was number one on all search engines. He has since taken the web page off line. ‘”During that time, I was traveling to Las Vegas almost weekly to keep up with the de-mands for silver strikes on eBay and bought numerous collections from people con-tacting me through my web page. When I sold a strike on eBay it also gave me the opportunity to sell many more to the same person,” says Ralph. He still trades and sells strikes. When asked about his most exciting silver strike “finds,” Ralph says, “I walked into a coin shop and walked out with two McCarran Blackjack Spades for $15.00 each! I

(Continued from page 9) Call for Nominations - The nomination period is getting close. A “call for nominations” will be put in the October newsletter. Cheri will create the ballot form that will be used. - Cheri to create ballot form. Plaque for Four Queens Owner - Bill feels we should create a plaque for the owner of the Four Queens because of all of his support of Shaun and our club. We could pre-sent it in October when the Halloween coin comes out or it could be presented in pri-vate. Bill made a motion to have a recognition plaque made not to exceed $75. Judy seconded, Approve - 3, Against - 1, Motion passed. - Bill to obtain plaque. Club Coin - Bill made a motion to do a club coin for year 12. There was a discussion about the quantity to be made. It was decided to make the same as 2010 - 175. Becky seconded. Motion unanimously passed. Tournament - Bill stated that he has received a few complaints about when the June tournament was conducted. We discussed options; but since the tournament is a “Casino” function and not a club function, this item was dismissed. Bill will talk to Shaun about moving the tournament to a time that ties into the convention instead of before the convention so club members do not have to choose between the two. Con-vention should be the priority since that is when we conduct our annual meeting. - Bill to talk to Shaun about moving June tournament. CCGTCC Meetings Bill is going to talk to CC&GTCC about not being able to get into our assigned room at our assigned time two years in a row. He is also going to request that the forum and club meeting be scheduled back-to-back. - Bill to talk to CC&GTCC regarding scheduling and access for forum and club meeting. Web Page Re: CC&GTCC - We need to update the wording on the CC&GTCC web site regarding the Silver Strikers Club. Judy will send out for everyone’s review in the next day or two. We will all review/revise and make a decision on the statement. Will also update wording on banners. - Judy to send Board current CC&GTCC statement. Members to review and submit revisions. New Price for One-Pound Coins - A request to change the price from $200 to $300 for the one pound coins has been submitted to the Nevada Gaming Commission. - None required. Bylaws - The Board members reviewed the proposed changes to Bylaws. Bill made a motion to accept changes and post the revised Bylaws. Becky seconded. Motion unanimously approved. - Bill notified webmaster to post revised Bylaws. Treasurer’s Report - Beginning balance of $20,171.75. Deposits of $1,536.00. Invoices of $253.14. Ending balance $21,454.61 - None required. Fall Newsletter - Becky noted that the deadline for submittals for the next newsletter is 9-30-10. - None required. Adjournment - Meeting adjourned at 6:14 p.m.

Club History By Jeff Gaffke

Some milestones in Silver Strike history: In 2002, one of the newest casinos in Las Vegas (at that time), The Palms, installed three $10. Also at this time, 28 casinos located on the strip and on Fremont Street had Silver Strike machines. Three casinos allowed trading to complete sets, and fif-teen casinos were selling obsolete strikes. The memberships drives were successful for several years, and in the year 2004 there were over 600 members in the club. In January of 2004, the Board of Directors of the CC&GTCC revoked the charters of all the chapters in order to protect the 501(c)(3) tax status of the national club. All club activities continued as usual. Club officers worked toward organizing our own club and seek tax exempt status. As of September of 2004, the Silver Strikers Club was incorporated in the State of Nevada and eventually attained tax exempt status. In the next newsletter, I intend to provide a history of this years events to be used as a reference guide into the future. From an article in The Wall Street Journal about the closing of the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas : “In 1955, Liberace earned $50,000 a week in Las Vegas (about $400,000 in today’s dollars). In the 1960’s he became the highest paid Vegas act.”

also discovered the Riverside error. Nothing feels better than making a great discov-ery!” High on Ralph’s list of striking is making many great friends though the years and at-tending the first silver striker slot tournament . . . and thanks to and because of Gary Heinz and his endless efforts we still have tournaments which we are all able to at-tend. Ralph vividly remembers his “most challenging encounter with a strike machine.” It was in Verdi at the single Gold Ranch machine. “I put in my $20.00. Nothing. Another $20.00. Nothing. And on it went. It was now me against the machine and I was not going to fail. Well, after $160.00 I gave up. I was beaten. Not a single strike! As I walked away with my head down, I passed one of the change booths and said, “Excuse me, you don’t happen to have any strikes I could buy?” The attendant’s response was, “How many would you like, Sir?” When asked for his thoughts about the future of strike collecting and/or the club, Ralph replied, “While talking with my San Diego friends Gary Heinz and Bill Brooks, through the efforts of Pam Martin and other, we are hopeful that more casinos will soon be putting in silver strike machines (fingers crossed).”
