Shaping the transition
The Walloon industrail valley is seen as a Walloon metropolis, albeit much more linear and less centralized than most. A key characteristic of linear cities is directionality. Next to this, zoning is what distinguishes a long-stretched urban plan from a linear city. With zoning, work is separated from living in order to provide a better climate of living.
By seeing the Mons Transition Hub as part of the linear city, the railway tracks itself forms an obstruction that has to be treated as such. This raises questions such as how to cross, bridge or program the obstruction. Next to this, it becomes important how to materialize the obstruction in order to make it part of the existing situation. These topics form the first steps in shaping the transition, both on city scale as well as on the larger scale as part of a transportation network.

Transformation
The project started of with a typical closed building block. With some basic transformations, we managed to create a building block that opened itself to the public. Next to this, the block turned out to score very good in daylight studies throughout the day. We managed to design a framework, quite literally, that is able to adept to a large number of different circumstances. The angle, height, width and appearance of the volume; basically everything can be changed within the project to create a suitable block for every single context.
When placed in a grid plan, a series of blocks is able to create interesting routes and spaces. By rotating one or more blocks by steps of ninety degrees, an arrangement of blocks can open or cover a public space. Also, exceptions can be articulated by just lifting one or two edges.

Linking and bridging
The Sixhaven metro station is situated in between the Overhoeks urban renewal project, the neighbourhood of Amsterdam North and a marina. Laying on the riverbank opposite the central station, a new development can attract a lot of users. A user type analysis helps in determining the programmatic needs.
A scheme based on the situation and programmatic input makes it possible to bring the three areas together and link them. Within the scheme, specific parts are extracted and examined in order to find specific ordering and layout. Through research in three dimensional modifications and operations such as bifurcation, typical elements are created on which the building design is based on. By multiply, scale or rotate these typical elements, they can be manipulated to serve specific program or needs.

The black box principle
In a black box, the internal end external are not connected. Whatever happens inside is not influenced by its surroundings, or, whatever happens outside will never influence the internal of a black box. The only given parameters are input and output. This is what makes the black box pavilion the ideal place for student parties, conferences and meetings between students and professors.
The pavilion is a temporary building, that will last for only five years. Also, the pavilion will not be used every day. For these reasons, the appearance of the building must be strong, even when it is not in use. The design of the interior may, according to the black box principle, differ from the external appearance.

Signature lamp
Light is one of the most important aspects of architecture. Without light, one will not be able to experience space. Both natural as well as artificial light contribute in the perception of the surrounding area.
With this standing lamp, I have tried to capture some basic aspects of light. First of all, the light itself illuminates the space around it. Because of the use of multiple light sources positioned on different heights, the lamp itself reflects and refracts its own light. This also enables the lamp to create its own shadows when placed along a surface.
The design of the lamp is based on my signature, S2, in braille language, which is the start of five vertically placed tubes. Each tube ends with a light bulb in which the filament is placed horizontally.

Architect Assistant
For a period of one and a half years, I have been working at the Rotterdam |NL| office of KCAP Architects & Planners. First as an intern and later on as architects assistant, I have been involved in several projects. As it was my first professional experience, I have learned a lot about the daily routine in a internationally operating office.
