Page 3: SIU Foundation Annual Report

As president of the SIU Foundation, I can assure you that the Foundation

Board of Directors takes its mission very seriously. We are devoted

to raising funds for Southern Illinois University, and we do not do this in

a vacuum. The foundation appreciates all those alumni and friends who

contribute their time and treasure to our university.

This annual report will provide you with several stories on how our

alumni and friends have provided essential support not available through

state funds or tuition. For instance, you’ll read about Marsha and Gary

Bertrand, an Austin, Texas, couple, who presented our university with $1

million to establish scholarships for students from middle-class families

who often aren’t qualified for financial aid. You will also learn about

thoughtful individuals who have established scholarships that have

enhanced SIU’s commitment to diversity. I was encouraged by businessman

and philanthropist Lester Crown, who pledged $50,000 to the Paul Simon

Public Policy Institute to match funds raised at a celebration honoring his late friend, Senator Paul Simon.

Some gifts extend beyond the monetary value. Students in our award-winning automotive technology program

are beneficiaries of paid internships and externships funded by corporations and alumni. I hope you will take the

time to read about the legacy of Katy and Gene Simonds, two longtime, devoted friends of SIU. Neither graduated

from SIU, but they loved the university – and their philanthropic gifts will be felt for generations to come.

In FY 2014 the foundation processed a 43 percent increase in gift receipts over the previous fiscal year. The

SIU Foundation received $13.9 million versus the $9.7 million we received in FY 2013. There are many other positive

indicators that can be found in our fiscal reports on pages 32-37. I hope you are as pleased as I am with the results

of the last 12 months.

Once again, thank you for providing us with the resources we need to succeed. We promise that your

investments will continue to build and enhance the educational experiences and opportunities for the students

and faculty at SIU.

A SIMONDS FAMILY LEGACY AT SIU

A couple remembered for their commitment to making a

difference continues to have an impact at SIU.

Katy and Gene Simonds founded Carbondale-based

E.T. Simonds Construction Co. in 1946. While neither

attended SIU, both were important friends of the institution,

and two of their four children attended the university.

One of their children, Gayl Pyatt, a 1976 graduate of the

SIU Law School, says her parents led by example through

their generosity.

“Gene and Katy Simonds taught their children the

importance of financially supporting causes in which they

believed. We just all knew it was the thing to do,” she says.

“Even though neither ever attended SIU, the university was an

important part of their lives in Carbondale for many years.”

Katy died in January at the age of 100, while Gene

passed away in 1989. However, their legacy will continue to

have an impact at SIU for years to come. Among their many

lasting philanthropic initiatives at SIU are the Katy Becker

Simonds Scholarship for Southern Illinois residents majoring

in business and the Eugene T. Simonds Memorial Library

Endowment Fund, which supports the purchase of materials

related to U.S. military history for Morris Library. The

Alumni Lounge at the College of Engineering was named in

honor of E.T. and Katy Simonds’ contributions to the college

in 2000. Morris Library is also home to the Simonds Family

Papers, 1836-2003.

The couple supported other academic program and

scholarship initiatives in addition to athletics, WSIU and

Morris Library. The residual of a trust established by the

Simonds continues to provide substantial benefit to the

Simonds Lecture in Democracy, Simonds Women’s Basketball

Endowment and Southern @ 150 Scholarships for students.

“Their patriotism and Dad’s service in WWII inspired

the Lectureship in Democracy. They both believed in the

importance of academic excellence,” Gayl says. “And Mom

was a huge follower of the SIU women’s basketball team.”

Marsha Ryan, a 1987 SIU Law School graduate, writes:

“Katy and her husband, E.T., were very active and generous

members of the Carbondale and SIU communities, raising

their wonderful family here. Katy was regularly seen at art

and athletic functions on campus and off. During Katy's

long and well-lived life, she remained a vital, valued part of

Southern Illinois in so many ways. I remember, particularly,

her grace and style and kindness and willingness to be

involved. She continues to be well represented in Southern

Illinois by her children, who follow in her footsteps,

generous and participatory.”

Gayl says her parents wanted to see the Southern

Illinois region and SIU thrive.

“Mom and Dad began supporting SIU many years ago

because they valued higher education, knew many Southern

Illinois students needed financial assistance, and had a strong

desire to 'give back' to their community after having achieved

their own business success,” she says. “They considered

SIU an economic engine in Southern Illinois, respected its

leadership, and wished to help the university succeed.”

Many students couldn’t pursue a college degree

without financial support. In fact, more than 80

percent of SIU students rely on some form of financial aid

to complete their education. This includes scholarships,

loans and work study.

An Austin, Texas, couple is among those who are

striving to create opportunities for young people who

covet a better life through education. Marsha and Gary

Bertrand were raised in a modest, small Illinois farming

community of 1,400 people. Today, the couple is committed

to supporting young people in similar circumstances

through gifts to their alma maters.

The Bertrands presented SIU with $1 million to

establish the Bertrand Foundation Scholarship Endowment.

Awards will be presented after the endowment generates

earnings (they are doing the same for the University of South

Carolina), and they have made provisions to support SIU

through a deferred estate gift.

Their gift will aid the families of students who may

not qualify for need-based financial aid but may still need

financial support to fund a college education. Recipients will

be able to focus more on attaining an education, as opposed to

perhaps assuming additional income-earning responsibilities

to finance expenses.

“Our scholarships are earmarked for middle-income

families, which is the environment we grew up in,” Gary says.

“Several scholarship programs are in place to support low-

income families. And those with high income don’t require

such support. Marsha and I have been fortunate to enjoy

success through our careers and various investments. We

don’t have any children, so we decided it was best to provide

scholarship support for our schools. We understand the need

for a degree and want to pass that opportunity on to others.”

Marsha, who graduated in 1970 from SIU with an

associate’s degree in business and subsequently earned her

MBA from Lake Forest College, is a freelance writer with

expertise in investment, finance and business-related topics.

Her work has been published in a variety of newspapers

and magazines, and she is the author of four books: “The

Consumer Guide to the Stock Market,” “Getting Started in

Investment Clubs,” “A Woman’s Guide to Savvy Investing”

and “Fraud! How to Protect Yourself from Schemes,

Scams, and Swindles.”

After graduating from the University of South

Carolina, Gary was in banking for 10 years, and

subsequently purchased a Chicago-based company

that specialized in glued magazine inserts for publications

such as Time, Newsweek and Readers Digest. He sold

his company in 1994.

“Education has been essential in our lives,” Marsha

says. “Neither one of us could have accomplished our

career goals without it.”

Fostering Inclusive Excellence

SIU’s proud tradition of celebrating diversity continues

thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends.

An extraordinary example is the late James

Greenwood, who enrolled at SIU in 1961 because it was

one of only a few universities that could accommodate his

wheelchair. More than 50 years later, he and his late wife,

Martha, left the university a $1.3 million gift to support other

students with disabilities. The Jim and Martha Greenwood

Fund, created through the Greenwoods’ estate, will provide

scholarships for students with disabilities who are studying

science and engineering.

James, who enjoyed a 29-year career with IBM, and

Martha, an artist and art teacher, wanted to ensure that SIU’s

history of serving students with disabilities would continue

for many years to come.

“Today, we work with more than 500 students, many of

whom have medical expenses and need costly equipment,”

says Sam Goodin, director of Disability Support Services at

SIU. “Scholarships like those provided by the Greenwoods

will make a very positive difference.”

Disability Support Services is just one student-focused

program that benefits from the support of donors.

Another is the university’s Achieve Program, which

has been making a difference in young people’s lives for

more than three decades. The full-service academic support

program assists students with learning difficulties such as

autism spectrum disorders and attention deficit disorders.

The Alison Hiller Excellence Fund was established in

2013 by the Hiller Family Foundation in honor of Alison

Hiller, an Achieve Program graduate. The fund assists

students enrolled in the Achieve Program with their required

fees. The Achieve Program is receiving $10,000 per year

during a five-year period, which began in November 2013.

“Support from the Hiller Family Foundation has

enabled Achieve Program students to continue their pursuit

of higher education. Five SIU students will continue

receiving academic support from the Achieve Program

this fall 2014 semester as a direct result of the Alison Hiller

Excellence Fund,” says Arlene Tan, program coordinator.

“Without this financial assistance, these students would

likely face significant challenges in meeting their academic

aspirations and in successfully graduating from SIU.”

A $10,000 scholarship presented annually in honor

of Dr. Harold Bardo, who retired in May as longtime

director of the MEDPREP program, will also make an

impact. The award will be presented to a graduating senior

in the School of Medicine. MEDPREP is a program that

provides support to qualified students who are members

of underrepresented populations pursuing careers in the

health profession.

Kevin Dorsey, dean of the School of Medicine, says

MEDPREP graduates often hail from families of lower

income and incur additional debt in the process of earning

their baccalaureate degrees before attending medical

school. This scholarship will assist recipients by offsetting

their debt. Dorsey hopes to create an endowment that will

foster additional support.

Bardo says he appreciates Dorsey and the School

honoring him in this fashion. But he is especially happy

that the funds will help students in need. “I was fortunate

to attend SIU on a basketball scholarship. Otherwise, I

couldn’t have gone to college because my parents couldn’t

afford it,” Bardo says. “So I know the value of receiving

financial assistance. It is sorely needed.”

SIU’s legacy of providing opportunities for all capable

students who want to improve their lives, regardless of

background or disability, is supported by committed donors.

“Today, we work with more than 500 students, many of whom have medical expenses and need costly

equipment. Scholarships like those provided by the Greenwoods will make a very positive difference.”

A SIMONDS FAMILY LEGACY AT SIU

A recognized business leader and philanthropist who

relished a close relationship with U.S. Sen. Paul

Simon wanted more young people to follow in his late

friend’s footsteps. And he took action.

In coordination with the Paul Simon Public Policy

Institute’s celebration event commemorating Simon’s 85th

birthday in November, Lester Crown pledged $50,000

to match funds raised at the function. The Paul Simon

Institute met the challenge, more than doubling the

amount of the initial pledge.

“It is extremely important for the university to

convince the next generation to become public servants,”

says Crown, chairman of Henry Crown & Co. “This is the

greatest country in the world. Young people shouldn’t take

it for granted. We should all give something back.”

A part of the Simon Institute’s mission is to promote

careers in public service through internships and other

activities and to build leaders in the mold of Simon.

Crown’s matching gift allows the Simon Institute to further

this mission and continue its initiatives.

Crown was a longtime, close friend of Simon. His

admiration for the senator is a primary reason for his

longstanding support of the Simon Institute and initiatives

that his friend deemed important.

“You had to like Paul. He was a straightforward

man who didn’t have his own agenda. Paul’s honorability,

morality and sincerity earned him tremendous respect of

so many, regardless of political affiliation,” Crown says.

“There’s nothing better than working with people you can

trust. Paul was an absolute pleasure. “

Crown says he also appreciated Simon’s ability to be

ahead of his time on various issues. In particular, he was

intrigued by Simon’s concern regarding water conservation.

“Paul was the first person I recall speaking about water

conservation. And as I see Lake Michigan on a daily basis in

Chicago, it is certainly something that I deem important as

well,” Crown says. “Paul saw the abundance of clean water

as one of the world’s major concerns. He understood the

importance of this issue before many others.”

And now Crown is paying homage to a gentleman

he refers to as the “moral conscience of Congress” by

supporting the entity that is named in his honor.

“This is the greatest country in the world. Young people

shouldn’t take it for granted. We should all give something back.”

Jesse Brian, a senior in automotive technology at SIU,

knows that pursuing a college degree would have

been difficult without receiving the Bridgestone/

Firestone Scholarship.

The Olney, Illinois, native also realizes that the

automotive technology program’s state-of-the-art equipment

will provide him with a competitive edge in the job market

once he graduates.

“Honestly, this scholarship has presented me with the

opportunity to stay in school,” Brian says. “This program

also receives support annually allowing students to work

with up-to-date equipment. SIU has an outstanding

automotive technology program that is unmatched

anywhere else.”

SIU’s program is one of the most widely respected

in the world. It strives to meet the goals of students and

the needs of the automotive, truck, equipment and related

ground transportation industries.

Through a close working relationship with alumni

and industry, SIU students benefit from paid corporate

internships, externships and special projects to apply their

training. Graduates are prepared to launch technical and

management careers with major manufacturers, suppliers

and government agencies across the nation and overseas.

“SIU automotive is known industry wide for

the sustained development of high-quality graduates

and leaders of the transportation industry,” says

Michael Behrmann, chair of the automotive technology

department. “Companies start actively recruiting our

students their freshman year. While we can’t necessarily

guarantee a job, we receive daily requests and opportunities

for our students.”

Organizations that covet SIU students range from global

corporations (General Motors, Toyota, Chrysler, Cummings

Diesel and Bosch) and government agencies (General

Services Administration) to insurance companies (State Farm,

Progressive) and financial entities (Ally Financial).

Additionally, numerous industry partners support

students through donations, training support, student

scholarships and laboratory funds to continue the

excellence found at SIU. This support provides direct

benefits to the students.

Gifts such as vehicles, vehicle components (including

engines and transmissions), parts, supplies and lubricants,

and tools and equipment provide hands-on experience

for aspiring professionals on a daily basis. Behrmann

estimates that the university needs $300,000 via gift-in-kind

contributions annually to keep pace with industry advances.

He says alumni and industry support has kept the program

on the cutting edge, preparing students for pertinent

roles after graduation.

Private and corporate support helps students

acquire real-world experience applicable to any mode

of transportation. Faculty prepare students for lifelong

careers in a constantly changing industry by teaching

them to think strategically.

As a result, SIU students are prepared to serve in

leadership roles throughout the industry. They are hired

as diagnostic developers, serviceability engineers, product

and program managers, business managers, field service

engineers, industry analysts and representatives,

or automotive trainers.

“The support we receive from outside individuals,

corporations and organizations is essential,” Behrmann says.

“This program makes an impact on young people who,

in turn, make a difference worldwide in the automotive

technology industry.”

SIU FOUNDATION ELECTS NEW OFFICERS, BOARD MEMBERS IN FY ’14

Three SIU Foundation Board of Directors assumed new

roles, while four alumni joined the board during FY ’14.

Greg Cook, successful businessman and

philanthropist who is a longtime advocate for SIU

Carbondale, was elected to preside over the SIU

Foundation Board of Directors. Cook, president and co-

founder of Cook Portable Warehouse (also know as Cook

Sales Inc.), studied business administration at SIU in the

late 1970s. He took over as the newly selected president

of the SIU Foundation effective July 1, 2013.

Roger Tedrick, owner of The Tedrick Group in Mount

Vernon, Illinois, is president-elect of the SIU Foundation.

The 1970 SIU graduate assumed his role July 1, 2013. Also,

Mary Kay Moore, former co-owner and CEO of the Center of

Comprehensive Services, is immediate past president of the

SIU Foundation. The two-degree SIU graduate completed a

two-year term as president of the board July 2011- June 2013.

Also, four SIU alumni joined the SIU Foundation Board

of Directors during FY ’14. They are serving three-year terms

that will conclude June 30, 2016.

The quartet who joined the foundation’s volunteer board

are: Sean Boston ’92, senior director of strategic sourcing and

merchandising for Interline Brands Inc., a Goldman Sachs

company based in Jacksonville, Florida; Diane Compardo ’91,

LMI Aerospace Inc. in St. Charles, Missouri.

Two former board members, Lynn McPheeters ’64 and

Ken Hull ’58, reached their foundation board terms limit of

service and retired from the board June 30. McPheeters and

Hull, who combined to contribute more than two decades

of service to the SIU Foundation, served as key leaders on

the foundation’s financial and audit team. McPheeters was

initially elected in 2002, while Hull joined the board in 2005.

The board governs the SIU Foundation, an

independent nonprofit organization that provides alumni

and friends a means to invest in the university’s future.

Established in 1942, the foundation solicits and administers

gifts from private sources in support of SIU Carbondale’s

academic mission. Private funding is generated through

annual giving, planned giving, major giving, corporate and

foundation relations, and campaigns.

ENDOWMENT INVESTMENTSThe SIU Foundation receives endowment contributions and invests them into the endowment

investment pool for perpetuity. An annual distribution of a portion of the revenue generated from

the endowment accounts is transferred to corresponding current accounts and used according to

donors’ restrictions. Many contributions are designated for scholarships, research, and the general

support of colleges and departments. Please visit www.siuf.org for more information.

CONTRIBUTIONSThe SIU Foundation accepts contributions in the form of cash, securities, and real estate or

personal property. Many corporations will match the contribution of employees, officers,

directors and, in some instances, spouses and retirees. The SIU Foundation also accepts

various types of planned gifts, whereby the donor makes a gift commitment during his or her

lifetime that will benefit the university in the future. Planned gifts are in the form of bequests,

gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts and life agreements.

The SIU Foundation applies a one-time, 6 percent supplemental fee to all gifts of cash and

securities. The foundation uses 5 percent of the fee to fund central fundraising operations and

returns 1 percent to the generating colleges for units to support their specific fundraising activities.

It is the foundation’s goal to increase private support to enhance the university’s mission as a

comprehensive undergraduate and graduate research institution. Donors contributed more than

$11.2 million during FY14.

Mission Statement

The Southern Illinois University Foundation was established in 1942 to solicit,

receive, hold and administer gifts from private sources for educational purposes. The SIU

Foundation provides alumni and other friends a means to invest in the future of their

university. The foundation is an independent, nonprofit corporation, which exists solely

to further the mission of SIU Carbondale. It is a designated 501(c)(3) organization with

appropriate approval from the Internal Revenue Service to issue tax deductible receipts

for private gifts received to support Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

The mission of the SIU Foundation is to maximize private support for SIU Carbondale to

assist the university in achieving its long-range goals. As outlined in the Strategic Plan,

the activities, programs, and efforts of the SIU Foundation will be driven by five priority

focus areas. These areas are developing next wave fundraising programs; fostering and

improving relationships with key constituency groups; recruiting and retaining strong,

high-capability staff; creating comprehensive marketing strategies; and implementing

improved board governance and leadership structures. Throughout the coming years,

the SIU Foundation will continue to raise money with the help of others, tout our

quality board and staff, and tell its story.
