CARDIAC ARREST HEART ATTACK DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE? CARDIAC ARREST occurs when electrical impulses in the heart become chaotic and cause the heart to stop beating. Cardiac arrest is an electrical problem. HEART ATTACK occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked. Restoring blood flow is the only way to prevent irreversible damage to the heart muscle. Often the person collapses, and becomes unresponsive to gentle shaking and shouting, and stops breathing. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS? WHAT ARE THE SIGNS? Nausea/ vomiting More than 380,000 CARDIAC ARRESTS happen every year. More than 730,000 Americans have a heart attack each year. 15% Four out of five CARDIAC ARRESTS happen at home. Shortness of breath Fainting No pulse/ heartbeat Unresponsiveness Chest discomfort Dizziness Chest discomfort Upper body discomfort: in one or both arms, back, neck, and jaw Victims begin experiencing brain damage within SIX MINUTES of cardiac arrest. WHAT TO DO? WHAT TO DO? Call 911 Check the person for responsiveness. If the person is not responding, call 911. Call 911 If you think you are having a heart attack, call 911. Don't wait more than five minutes! First responders can provide on scene, life-saving treatment while en route to the closest hospital. When it comes to heart attacks, time is muscle! Don’t hesitate. Recognize the signs. Call 911. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest. Aim for 100 beats per minute – that’s faster than one per second! One way to keep the beat is to sing Stayin’ Alive by the BeeGees. Administering CPR right away can double or triple the chance of survival. Hands-Only CPR has been proven to be just as effective as traditional CPR with mouth-to-mouth. STEP 1 STEP 1 STEP 2 of people who have a heart attack will die from it. HEART ATTACK is a “plumbing” problem. Only 27% of people are aware of all major signs and symptoms of a heart attack. Not everyone experiences the crushing chest pain that’s often portrayed in the movies. Common signs: Symptoms in WOMEN can present differently than men. Shortness of breath Cold sweat Dizziness Shortness of breath Extreme fatigue Nausea/ vomiting Back or jaw pain of heart damage occurs within the first two hours. 85% Only around 50% of heart attack victims call 911. People often use these heart terms interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. Understand the difference and act fast at the first sign to help save lives!
