G-A MIDDLE SCHOOL November 6, 2015 Giving Thanks October was filled with gratitude and celebrations. During the month, sixth graders came together to make Halloween cards for veterans at the VA Hospital. The students spent time coloring different Halloween- themed pictures and writing inspiring messages to encourage the recipients. November 11 is Veterans Day. We will be making cards for the veterans for this holiday as well. The vets are so thankful for them, and the students are enjoying this opportunity to give back. On October 30, fifth and sixth grade students took a walk around Augusta for their annual Halloween parade. The students walked in their Halloween outfits from the middle school to downtown Augusta where parents and local businesses handed out candy to the excited students. The parade was a great success in large part to the participating businesses, parents, and especially the students who did a wonderful job of showing RAM pride. Thank you to all who helped make this event possible. We would also like to thank all dance chaperones who helped make the Halloween dance a spectacular night! Remind The sixth grade team is revving up parent communication with use of the Remind app. This app allows teachers to send notifications to parents through their phones in the form of text messages. Remind is a free, safe, and simple messaging tool that helps our teachers share important updates and reminders with students and parents. All personal information is kept private. Information on how to sign up for Remind is included below, or feel free to contact one of the sixth grade teachers. Science in November As the season changes our rain into snow we will be studying all phase changes that matter undergoes. We will also be diving into the ATOM and recognizing the structure and functions of these particles and the importance they play in our universe. If you have not yet signed up for the science remind app please feel free to text the message @musialczyk to the number 81010. GO RAMS! Seminar A new development in sixth grade Seminar classes will be coming very soon! Select students will be receiving support at their instructional level for math, reading, and science through a computer-based program called Moby Max. Students will begin the process by completing a diagnostic pre-test. The program will then provide them with practice at their individual level. We are so excited to provide our students with this support opportunity! Weekly Reports Please continue watching for weekly progress reports to come home the last school day of each week. Sign and return the reports each Monday. Encourage your student to have work completed and join the next Fun Friday! Social Studies News In Social Studies we are learning how the Global Grid (Latitude & Longitude) can help us better understand the Earth.  The students recently created and presented projects based on topics from the book "If the World Were A Village" by Robert J. Smith.  This project was intended to help the students develop a world view and how all of our personal decisions play into the bigger picture that effect the world we live in.  The projects really put their creative gifts on display!!  I am excited to see their other talents at work.  If you haven't signed up for the Remind app for Social Studies yet text @48b1241 to the number 81010.

Math Notes

Students begin their second module next week: Arithmetic Operations Including Dividing By a Fraction. The main focus of this module is division of whole numbers, division by a fraction, and operations on multi-digit decimals. A Parent Tips note is attached to this newsletter. If you haven't signed up for the Remind app for Math yet, text @mrsbritai to the number 81010.

English

Many parents have successfully signed up for the Remind app for Mrs. Theunick. If you haven't yet and would like to, please text the message @mrstheuni to the number 81010. Also, many students are utilizing Quizlet to study for their vocabulary tests. I highly recommend this website/app! Just search for "wordly wise 6th grade" followed by the lesson and number to access each lesson's study guides.
