So you say you want a Resolution? As we enter a new year, some of us may transition into

2013 by resolving to make adjustments to the way we interface with our situations, settings, and surroundings. As a part of the self contracts we create for ourselves, some of us may decide to make subtle behavioral habits while others may resolve to make life altering and revolutionary transformations. New Year Resolutions are an attempt to modify our relations within their everyday environment by making slight changes to work rou-tines or in some cases, contemplating wholesale adjustments, including complete career path changes. In my experience over the years in interacting with people about their New Year Reso-lutions, I have found that they are rarely selfish. It’s generally not about getting the new convertible Corvette as much as it’s about self development. Essentially, it is about an attempt to self recalibrate through concerted effort, and if success is real-ized, the entire collective inadvertently benefits.

In the world of economics, the “serving one’s self, benefit the collective” theory was given the metaphor “invisible hand” by economic philosopher Adam Smith over 200 years ago. Mr. Smith believed that those that were attempting to advance their

own cause economically were inadvertently benefiting the en-tire collective. His writings were believed to lay groundwork for the formulation of a market economic philosophy. Although his theories have been long debated, the basic theory behind the premise may provide a better tool for seeing the effectiveness of individual New Year resolutions. If we use a resolution “to get healthy” as an example, you may get a better idea of where I’m going with this. In the New Year, a lot of individuals will decide it’s their year to make a change for their own health. As those individuals become healthier by exercising and eating better, it provides greater benefit to the collective. To solve the epidemic of costs associated with inactivity starts with us. Multiple studies show that when we all take care of ourselves, our health care costs go down, our mental health goes up, and our collective well-being is elevated. Let us be YOUR invisible hand as we partner in making your New Year resolution successful. Go to our website and find a park in your community in which to enjoy. The benefits to you and the collective are real. And remember, your simple resolu-tion may become a part of a greater health revolution. It all starts with you.
