Rittal system climate control for mechanical engineering

Precision scores an aceWhenever a higher enclosure protection category is required due to hot, metal dustladen or oily ambient conditions, Rittal liquid cooling concepts really come up trumps. Precise temperature control of machine and process cooling is another priority. When cooling spindles with 40,000 rpm, for example, Rittal recooling systems supply volumetric flows and coolant temperatures at precisely the required level. Rittal system climate control is the key to a high level of dimensional accuracy, consistently perfect workpieces, and stable production conditions.

Example: Rittal system climate control for mechanical and plant engineeringThe air inside the hall is contaminated with metal swarf and oil mist, and is unable to absorb waste heat from the controllers and machine cooling system. A comprehensive Rittal liquid cooling concept with central recooling (1) provides a particularly efficient solution. All function and safety-relevant components are remotely monitored with Rittal CMC-TC (3). The benefit to you: Added perfection and increased productivity. high speed, thanks to the immersion recooling system (7). Process heat from the welding robot and heat loss from the PC case of the robot controller (18) case based on TS 8, equipped with air/water heat exchanger (17) is effectively dissipated via Rittal recooling systems (1). The twin-doored enclosure ES 5000 with air/water heat exchanger, wall-mounted (8), is integrated into the design of the machines. Rittal thermoelectric coolers (16) are a particularly compact, efficient solution for cooling the Rittal Comfort Panel (13) command panels. The enclosure is custom-built and equipped to order, with a support arm system (15) tailored to your individual requirements.

Example: Rittal system climate control for data centres and ITHigh heat loads in modern data centres, maximum availability, and the most energyefficient climate control system available. To accommodate all three requirements, you will need an individual concept: Rittal liquid cooling IT. Redundant chillers (1), free cooling (1.1) and heat recovery (7). Piping systems are designed on a projectspecific basis. Data centre A At the heart of this concept are server racks (9) with the option of aisle containment (8). The cold air required is blasted in via the raised floor by two CRAC systems (10).

Other LCP-cooled (11) computer cases also operate without dissipating heat to the ambient air. Development server room, UPS B The server systems are cooled via LCPs (14), without a raised floor and without putting pressure on the climate control system. The heat is dissipated completely silently via the piping system. All server racks are based on the TS 8 enclosure platform (15). The dissipation of heat loss from the UPS is also integrated into the liquid cooling concept via the air/water heat exchanger. Alternative recooling via LCP Inline or LCP Extend.

Administration, monitoring C All function and safety-relevant components are remotely monitored with Rittal CMC-TC. Messages and controls occur centrally in the control room (23). Super-low-noise roof-mounted fans (23) cool the network enclosures in the office. An even quieter alternative are air/water heat exchangers integrated into the coolant cycle. EMC fan-and-filter units with speed control (24) ensure fault-free operation and cooling of the control room consoles. The result: Targeted, low-noise, energy efficient!

Cooling units also available in stainless steel. TopTherm-Plus cooling units (1, 2) ensure constant temperatures for control electronics, regardless of variations in the ambient conditions.

System climate control for final assembly and handling systems

Air versus heatEven in apparently non-critical ambient conditions, for example when there is an adequate supply of clean, cool air, it is still worthwhile to provide climate control. Here too, the aim is to achieve maximum reliability with exceptional efficiency. Reliability and efficiency with fan-and-filter units: Temperature-dependent speed control plus temperature and airflow monitoring. Reliability and efficiency with air/air heat exchangers: Thanks to separate air circuits (external/internal), dust remains excluded, while a micro-controller provides temperature-dependent control and monitoring of key parameters. The benefit to you: Efficient reliability at all times.

Fan-and-filter unitsFan-and-filter units are ideal for dissipating heat loads cost-effectively. The prerequisite is that the ambient

Air/air heat exchangersThe requirement for using air/air heat exchangers is that the ambient temperature must be below the required enclosure internal temperature. Dust and contaminated ambient air is

air must be relatively clean with a temperature below the desired enclosure internal temperature. The entire range of fan-and-filter units is also available with EMC shielding.

unable to ingress the enclosure, thanks to the two separate air circuits.

to liquid cooling e.g. of highfrequency motor spindles and other drive technology. Precise workpiece machining thanks to precise, constant temperatures of the cooling media. In this way, temperature peaks inside enclosures for example, in summer can be effectively dissipated via air/water heat exchangers.27

System climate control for final assembly and handling systemsAir versus heat Even in non-critical ambient conditions, it is still worthwhile providing systematic climate control. Here too, the aim is to achieve maximum reliability with exceptional efficiency. Control of production plant and handling systems A Reliability and efficiency with air/air heat exchangers (1) to cool the free-standing enclosures ES 5000 (3). Thanks to separate air circuits (external/ internal), dust is unable to ingress. A high operating ratio and minimal cleaning required. Monitoring of key parameters via a microcontroller.28

Robot: Effective liquid cooling of controller and process B A central recooling system (7) kills two birds with one stone: Effective cooling of the PC case (8) via air/water heat exchangers (6). Precise cooling of machine spindles and/or welding heads. Machine operation, quality assurance C Reliability and efficiency thanks to fan-andfilter units (21) for Industrial Workstations IW (20): Temperature-dependent speed control. Temperature and airflow monitoring. Exceptionally energy-efficient cooling of command panels with thermoelectric coolers (17).

Control room D The aim is to minimise the level of noise pollution in offices: This can be achieved with Office roofmounted fans (24) and speed-controlled fan-and-filter units (27). Zero emissions of heat and noise, thanks to a liquid cooling concept.

more densely packed in enclosures and electronic cases, systems are becoming increasingly sensitive to external factors such as dust, oil, moisture and temperature. Heat in particular is a deadly enemy of sensitive microelectronics. For example, a general rule of thumb for semi-conductors is that an increase in the operating temperature of 10C, in relation to the maximum permissible operating temperature, will shorten its service life by half. In order to guarantee proper functioning of the electronics, this heat needs to be dissipated.

Heat conduction

Convection

Radiation

Ambient conditions

Enclosure interior problems

There are three basic forms of heat transfer: Thermal conduction: Heat is transported by matter, without the matter itself being moved. The energy is passed from particle to particle. Convection: Energy flows with the matter. The transport medium, e.g. a liquid or gas, takes up energy in the form of heat and dissipates energy as heat. Radiation: Heat is passed from one body to another in the form of radiation energy, without a medium material. The decisive factor for the type of heat dissipation to be used in enclosures is whether they are open (air-permeable) or closed (air-tight). Whereas in open enclosures, the heat is dissipated by means of air circulation, in closed enclosures the heat can only be dissipated via the enclosure wall. Rittal cooling units provide the ideal system solution for ensuring an optimum operating temperature inside an airtight enclosure, even at high external temperatures.

The following pages contain detailed calculation formulae for your chosen option.

Calculation of effective enclosure surface area Of the variables required for calculation purposes, the effective enclosure surface area A requires special explanation. The thermal output dissipated by the enclosure not only depends on its actual surface area; the installation type of the enclosure also plays a decisive role.

An enclosure which stands in a room unobstructed on all sides may dissipate more heat than one sited against a wall or in a niche. For this reason, there are precise specifications on how to calculate the effective enclosure surface area depending on the type of installation site. The formulae for calculating A are specified in DIN 57 660, part 500 and IEC 890 (see table below).

Project planningGeneral information Calculation basis for enclosure climate controlIn natural convection, heat loss is dissipated to the outside via the enclosure panels. The prerequisite for this is that the ambient temperature must be lower than the temperature inside the enclosure. The maximum temperature increase (T)max. which may occur inside an enclosure compared with the ambient air is calculated as follows:. QV k A . QV = Heat loss installed in the enclosure [W] . QS = Heat emitted by the enclosure surface [W] . QS > 0: Radiation (Ti > Tu) . QS < 0: Irradiation (Ti < Tu) . QE = Required cooling output of an enclosure cooling unit [W] . QH = Required thermal output of an enclosure heater [W] qw = Specific thermal output of a heat exchanger [W/K] . V = Required volumetric air flow of a fan-and-filter unit to maintain the maximum permissible temperature difference between the extracted air and the emitted air [m3/h] T = Ti Tu = Max. admissible temperature difference [K]

Condensation and dehumidification of enclosure air when using cooling units One unavoidable side-effect of using cooling units is the dehumidification of the enclosures interior air. As it cools down, part of the humidity contained in the air condenses on the evaporator coil. This condensate must be reliably discharged from the enclosure. The amount of condensate occurring depends on relative humidity, the air temperature inside the enclosure and on the evaporator coil, and the air volume present in the enclosure. The Mollier h-x diagram shows the water content of air depending on its temperature and relative air humidity.

Practical tips In all situations where optimum operating temperatures are required inside an enclosure, even at high external temperatures, a Rittal enclosure cooling unit can provide the right solution. It is even possible to cool the interior temperature of the enclosure to well below the ambient temperature. The favourable aerodynamic arrangement of the air inlet and outlet openings in the internal and external circuits ensures optimum air circulation inside the enclosure. This sample calculation will show you a quick, time-saving method for calculating a cooling unit. For example: A cooling unit with a refrigeration output of 1500 watts commences operation with a temperature setting of Ti = 35C. The relative ambient air humidity is 70 %. If air at 35C is passed over the evaporator coil, the surface temperature of the evaporator coil (evaporation temperature of the refrigerant) is approximately 18C. At the boundary layer adhering to the surface of the evaporator coil, water is deposited at the dew point. The difference x = x1 x2 indicates how much condensation is incurred per kg of air with complete dehumidification. The leak-tightness of the enclosure has a decisive effect on the quantity of condensation.

The quantity of condensation is calculated from the following equation:W = V x

W V x

= Water quantity in g = Volume of the enclosure in m3 = Density of air kg/m3 = Difference of water content in g/kg dry air (from the Mollier h-x diagram)

Enclosure door closed: Only the enclosure volume is dehumidified.V = width height depth = 0.6 m 2 m 0.5 m V = 0.6 m3 W = V x = 0.6 m3 1.2 kg/m3 11 g/kg W = 7.92 g 8 ml

Poorly sealed cable designs, damaged door seals and the attachment of display media to enclosure surfaces lead to increased rates of leakage in the enclosure. Hence, with a leakage rate of, say, 5 m3/h, a continuous condensate volume of up to 80 ml/h may occur. Summary: Enclosure cooling units should only operate with the door closed.

Seal the enclosure on all sides. Use a door limit switch. Use TV-tested equipment. Only set the enclosure internal temperature as low as is actually needed.Rittal System Climate Control

Notes on water quality For safe operation of the equipment, it is essential to observe the VGB guidelines on cooling water (VGB-R 455 P). Cooling water must not contain any limescale deposits or loose debris; in other words, it should have a low level of hardness, particularly a low level of calcium hardness. For recooling within the plant, the calcium hardness should not be too high. On the other hand, however, the water should not be so soft that it attacks the operating materials. When recooling the cooling water, the salt content should not be allowed to increase excessively due to the evaporation of large quantities of water, since electrical conductivity increases as the concentration of dissolved substances rises, and the water thereby becomes more corrosive. For this reason, not only is it always necessary to add a corresponding quantity of fresh water, but also to remove part of the enriched water. Gypsiferous water is unsuitable for cooling purposes because it has a tendency to form boiler scale, which is particularly difficult to remove. Furthermore, cooling water should be free from iron and manganese, because otherwise deposits may occur which settle in the pipes and block them. At best, organic substances should only be present in small quantities, because otherwise sludge deposits and microbiological contamination may occur.

The complete absence of corrosion under experimental conditions suggests that solutions with a significantly higher salt content and greater corrosion potential (such as seawater) may still be tolerated.

Project planning

Our project engineers will be happy to help you design a recooling system for your specific application area. An overview of the planning data required for this purpose can also be found on the Internet at www.rittal.com in the section on system climate control/process and machine cooling.

Cooling waterPreparation and maintenance of the water in recooling systems Depending on the type of installation to be cooled, certain requirements are placed on the cooling water with respect to purity. According to the level of contamination and the size and design of the recooling systems, a suitable process is used to prepare and/or maintain the water. The most common types of contamination and most frequently used techniques to eliminate them in industrial cooling are:

Contamination of the water

Procedure Filtering of water via Mesh filter Gravel filter Cartridge filter Precoated filter Water softening via ion exchange Addition of stabilisers and/or dispersing agents to the water Addition of passifiers and/or inhibitors to the water Addition of biocides to the water

Mechanical contamination

Excessive hardness Moderate content of mechanical contaminants and hardeners Moderate content of chemical contaminants Biological contaminants, slime bacteria and algae

Fan-and-filter units

Fan-and-filter units

Fan-and-filter units are ideal for dissipating heat loads cost-effectively. The prerequisite is that the ambient air must be relatively clean with a temperature below the

desired enclosure internal temperature. The entire range of fan-and-filter units is now also available with EMC shielding and all required rated voltages.

Application diversity and functionsParticularly for applications in the food industry, the hose-proof hood prevents the ingress of damp. The protection category of IP 56 is achieved in conjunction with filter mats. Not always full power! At lower ambient temperatures, the air throughput may be reduced. By adapting the fan-and-filter speed to match the temperature using a controller, noise generation is reduced.

Fast assemblySuper-fast clip-on mounting This guarantees fast, completely secure attachment of the fan-and-filter unit. The prerequisites for protection category IP 54 are met as standard. Screws are not required. Removal of the louvred grille, likewise without any screws, means that filter mat changes can be achieved in next to no time. Draw-in or extract? The air direction may be quickly reversed from draw-in (default setting) to extracting. Simply rotate the fan through 180.

Aesthetics and functionTypical of the Rittal fan-and-filter unit design is the extremely low build height. The super-slimline vent grille guarantees optimum air throughput with low noise generation. Combined with the technical features, Rittal fan-andfilter units meet all application requirements.

Rack-mounted/tangential fans, fan systems

Rack-mounted/tangential fans, fan systems

All rack-mounted climate control components are fitted directly onto the 482.6 mm (19) mounting level for subracks. Positioning directly beneath the electronic components ensures effective cooling, and prevents the formation of hot-spots.

Ready-to-use, wired modules equipped with fans for numerous Rittal enclosure system platforms offer effective air throughput and minimal assembly work. Fan roofs, door-mounted fans for server enclosures, internal fan mounting panels and enclosure internal fans are all available.

50

Rittal System Climate Control

Tangential fansRack-mounted/tangential fans, fan systems320 m3/h air throughput, 2 U The high air throughput means that Rittal tangential fans are capable of dissipating large heat losses from the enclosure. The minimal noise generation of 52 dB creates a pleasant working environment. Front outlet grille 2 U for hot air outlet to the outside in the upper section of the enclosure.

Rack-mounted fan moduleThe rack-mounted fan slides into the guide frame like a drawer. Connectors on the rear ensure immediate contact. Installation options for the guide frame: Directly in the subrack, via two mounting brackets on the 482.6 mm (19) mounting angles. Ideal for avoiding hot-spots in fully populated enclosures.

For the office sector: Roof-mounted fanLow noise generation and high performance for sensitive office areas. Unit consisting of TS roof plate and fan.

Benefits at a glanceRack-mounted/tangential fans Rapid installation on 482.6 mm (19) mounting levels Direct, effective dissipation of heat loss, thanks to positioning beneath the assemblies No externally mounted equipment to disrupt the aesthetic appearance of the enclosure Fan systems Fast assembly Targeted air routing to avoid hot-spots Perfect system integration
