Thank you to all the residents who came
to our AGM. It was a very informative and
well attended meeting. Pam Russell, a
Trustee of St. Luke’s Hospice reminded
us of all the work they are doing and was
pleased to inform us that they had won
the ‘Student Placement of the Year’
Award. Our chairman Michael presented
her with a cheque for £200 which was
raised as part of our Christmas raffle. Our
three councillors updated us on the
various causes they had responded to
over the past year. PCSO Leah Armstong
and her colleague PCSO Mark Martin
were delighted to meet the residents.
Leah updated us on past events and was
able to say that there is little crime in our
area. They are two delightful people
happy to listen to any of our concerns.
Other guest speakers updated us on the
Safer Neighbourhood Team, the
Neighbourhood Forum, changes to
Council planning and this year’s Ward
Working funding, earmarked especially to
help young people.

AGM Report continued - At the AGM, Michael, our chairman, updated us on
some of the committee’s work over the past 12 months, ranging from local
planning issues to the successful introduction of membership cards. He reported
on our Summer and Christmas parties which were a great success and thanked
Noel, the landlord of The Windermere for giving us the venue. By the time you
receive this newsletter we no doubt enjoyed another fun (and sunny??) Summer
Party. Michael mentioned that four of our long-serving Road Stewards (Jeanine
Leon Soon, Chris Locke, Marion Perrin and Alvin Wright) received a special award.
He thanked all Road Stewards for their sterling work. Jeanine and Marion were
able to attend our Christmas Party. It was lovely to see the surprise on their faces
when they were presented with their Certificate. Well deserved!
We currently have seven vacancies. Please help us!
Julia, our treasurer, explained the financial report in detail and was pleased to
inform us that £600 are in hand to use for the benefit of residents.
The members of the committee agreed to continue working for SKPPRA. Their
names and contact details are listed on page 10. Trixi
A note of appreciationI have been a member of SKPPRA for many years and enjoy the help I am ableto give. I was very surprised to get the Certificate and it was much appreciated.
May the things you (SKPPRA) do give lightness of heart and happiness ofthought; and bring joy to he hearts of the giver, as well as the receiver.
Thanks again. Alvin Wright
Aircrafts in the Park? Well, Model Aircrafts...
Sean writes: Dear Resident of SKPPRA, the Summer holidays are imminently due
and you may be keen for your sons/daughters to be gainfully occupied. If you think
they might develop an interest in building and flying model aircrafts, using a
simulator, or aerial photography, then come along to Northwick Park (adjacent to
golf course) for an introductory ‘look-see’ from 10am every Saturday and Sunday
(weather permitting). If you want to know more you can always drop me an e-mail:
[email protected]. Hope to see you soon.

Visiting the William Morris Gallery
On my first visit to the William Morris Gallery in the winter I made the mistake of
leaving the train at Blackhorse Road and endured a long walk against a biting east
wind. Never was the Water House and the promise of its warm interior a more
welcome sight! The better way, as I found out, is to go to the end of the Victoria
Line at Walthamstow Central. A signposted ten-minute walk up busy Hoe Street,
turning into Jewel Road brings one opposite the gallery. The gallery is open
Wednesdays to Sundays. Admission is free.
William Morris, who was born in 1834, is remembered for his rejection of the ill-
designed, mass-produced wares that flooded the Victorian market. He sought a
return to real artist-inspired craftsmanship. Having inherited money from a wealthy
father, he was able to travel and to experiment in various fields of design. He
became expert in wallpaper and fabric design, producing patterns of such enduring
quality that they are still being manufactured today. In my own hallway I have one
of his simpler wallpaper designs.
In 1877, Morris & Company opened an interior furnishing showroom in Oxford
Street, in parallel with a lucrative interior design consultancy, following
commissions for work in St James's Palace. Water House is where William Morris
spent part of his childhood. The rooms contain displays relating to his life and
work. There are several hands-on exhibits such as ' build your own cathedral' with
wooden towers and shapes reflecting his enthusiasm for the cathedrals he had
seen in Amiens and Rouen. In the workshop there is a short video describing the
process of making a stained-glass window. cont. on page 9

I fancied seeing the new Mary Rose Museum, arranged to meet friends from the
Isle of Wright and delivered 73kg of plastic bottle tops to the only recycling
company who pay cash for high grade plastic - all excellent reasons to spend a
long weekend in Portsmouth. Walking around the city, especially the Historic
Dockyard, was well worth the trip. A fascinating glimpse into Royal Navy history, let
alone the awe-inspiring achievement of raising the Mary Rose which capsized on
19th July 1545. This museum and all the other exhibitions give you a unique
glimpse into Tudor life. There is so much to see that I will have to go again.
Now to the bottle tops - my main reason really, but I felt I could not justify spending
more money in petrol than I would get for charity. The company, a small family-run
business, are the only ones who pay cash for high grade plastic which they granulate
and sell on thus making their profit. They made time available to answer all my
questions and gave me useful tips to make sure that we collect the right plastic. A
whole bag can be contaminated if the wrong type of plastic is mixed in - a waste of
all the effort! If you are one of my “dedicated bottle top collectors”, please get in
touch and I will let you have details of how to make sure we get it right. I also plan
to get those local schools involved who expressed an interest. All for a good cause
- in this case St. Luke’s Hospice! Trixi

Obituary - Sheila Clark
We regret to report the death of former resident Sheila Clark, who passed away
suddenly and very unexpectedly on 2nd April 2013 aged 76. Sheila and her
husband Keith, who died at the end of April last year, moved to Carlton Avenue
East in 1962 where they spent many happy years bringing up their two daughters,
Jane and Sarah (both of whom attended Preston Park School, with Sarah going on
to Preston Manor). Those who remember Sheila and Keith will know that in 2008,
after 46 years in Carlton Avenue East, they moved to Bexley in Kent to be nearer
their daughter Sarah. Throughout the last couple of years and whilst struggling to
deal with Keith's Alzheimer's and subsequent death, Sheila had been suffering with
severe anaemia but, having had a diagnosis earlier in the year and treatment
started, her sudden and unexpected death has shocked the family.
Those of you who remember Sheila and Keith will know of their involvement over
the years with both the Residents' Association and Neighbourhood Watch
activities. Some may even remember the many fund raising garage sales that were
held in the early years at 181 Carlton Avenue East as Sheila was a founder
member and Vice Chairman of the Harrow and Wembley group for the National
Association for the Welfare of Children in Hospital (now known as Action for
Children). Following their eldest daughter, Jane, having to spend a great deal of
time in hospital at a very early age, Sheila's hard work, determination, campaigning
and fund raising activities had a lot to do with changing the way of thinking with
regard to children going into hospital without their parents.
Sarah Jenkins (daughter of Keith and Sheila Clark)

Wiliam Morris Gallery cont. from page 6
Morris did not like the crude colours of the new artificial dyes and spent time
researching the use of natural indigo. At the top of the central staircase there is a large child-friendly landing. Adjoiningrooms show architecture and other work by designers of his fraternity. Space isgiven to several art-works by Frank Brangwyn, including a vivid poster showingCanadian troops entering Cambrai in October 1918. Brangwyn was a co-founder ofthe gallery. There is also a room devoted to the Kelmscott Press, an enterprisefulfilling an ambition to print fine books. Morris oversaw every aspect of the work, including the design of new typefaces and the blackness of the ink. The range of his interests was stunning. He is now regarded as a pioneer ofmodernism. Later, in the 1920s, at the famous Bauhaus school founded byWalter Gropius, craftsmanship was still regarded as the basis of design. Thedifference was that industrial processes were studied, together with newmaterials, such as bentwood and tubes for furniture; glass walls, concrete andstructural steel for buildings. On 4th June the William Morris Gallery was proclaimed Art Fund Museum of theYear 2013, competing against such important galleries as the Hepworth, Wakefield, which I wrote about last time. In fine weather the gallery benefits from its setting infront of a picturesque moat and the popular Lloyd Park with its facilities for allages. This is overlooked from the Tea Room where light lunches and refreshmentsare served in a bright conservatory space. A mix of small tables and long refectorybenches suits all comers. There is a lift to the upper floor, and there is a shop. What more do we need for a relaxed and informative day out? D.M.P. 4/6/13

John Brommage It is with sadness that I have to report the death of John
Brummage, aged 84, after several years of poor health. He had lived in Derwent
Gardens since 1962 and was a very familiar figure on his motor-bike in earlier
years and on his mobility scooter in later years. David Glyn-Williams
David Hawley - David, who lived at 17 Second Avenue, was also known as
'railway Dave' as he worked as a signal man on the railway for many years. Sadly
he died on 18th March at Central Middlesex Hospital following a short illness at the
age of 64. He was born in Second Avenue and lived there all of his life. He
attended Preston Park Primary School and then went on to Harrow High School.
Not only did he work for the railways but he was a big railway and also an aviation
enthusiast and spent much of his spare time pursuing these interests. David was
well known and respected by all in the local community. Noel Hehir
National Geographic Magazines. A set of copies from the late 80's early 90's.
All in very good condition. To collect, please contact David on 07802 892072 or email [email protected]
