    ato!s or ions located at the lattice points' are still lar"erthan the interstitial sites that the# occup#$ Conse,uentl#' the surroundin" cr#stal re"ion is co!pressed

    and distorted$ Interstitial ato!s such as h#dro"en are often present as

    i!purities6 hereas car%on ato!s are intentionall# addedto iron to produce steel$

    formed by a cation leaving its normal position vacant andmoving into an interstitial site.

    There is no change in charge because the cation maintainsthe same positive charge as an interstitial.
