STUDIED AREASActivity of project were realised during 2006 - 2008 in three

Slovak-Hungarian transboundary groundwater bodies:1) Groundwater bodies in Quaternary of the Ipel/Ipoly river

basin (Slovakia and Hungary), and the connecting mixed Oligocene, Miocene mountainous groundwater bodies in Hungary.

2) Groundwater bodies in Mesozoic carbonate formations in Slovensky kras mts. in Slovakia and in Aggtelek-hegység in Hungary.

3) Groundwater bodies in Quaternary alluvial sediments of Bodrog river basin in Slovakia and in Rétköz and Bodrogköz in Hungary.

Justification of the project:

• good drinking water quality as a base human right• EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/ES from 23

October 2000)• creation of uniform procedures for assessment of

qualitative and quantitative parameters in transboundary groundwater bodies (Ipeľ region, Bodrog catchment and the Slovak karst - Aggtelek region)

• common research and exchange of information and data• identification of different transboundary influences

Page 11: Slovak transboundary groundwater bodies

INTERREG IIIA

Target groups:

• population of cross-border regions (the most significant and largest target group)

• regional authorities (local governments) and decision makers

• organizations of nature protection, investors• water works companies• scientists

Page 12: Slovak transboundary groundwater bodies

INTERREG IIIA

General objective:• to contribute towards improvement of qualitative and

quantitative parameters in transboundary groundwater bodies

until 2015

Main objective:• compilation of uniform geological, hydrogeological and

environmental information system

Page 13: Slovak transboundary groundwater bodies

INTERREG IIIA

Quantifiable aims (1):

• development of common methods regarding standardization and co-ordination of practical procedures defining quantitative and qualitative parameters in GW bodies in accordance with WFD

• creation of uniform data structure and uniform geographical referencing (coordinate system) aimed at data exchange and common assessment

• setting up and harmonization of threshold values of selected indicators showing chemical status of groundwater

• realisation of joined hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical mapping in the area with lack of relevant data

Page 14: Slovak transboundary groundwater bodies

INTERREG IIIA

Quantifiable aims (2):

• hydrogeological and qualitative characteristics of transboundary groundwater bodies

• characteristics of exploitable amount of groundwaters and assessment of their rational use

• characteristics of potential sources of groundwater contamination and evaluation of groundwater vulnerability

• organisation of an international conference and dissemination of the project outcomes among wide-scale public

Geological basement in transboundary regions :

• preparation of unify legend for geological maps of transboundary regions•compilation of geological maps at a scale 1:100 000

GIS database of hydrogeological information:•application in MS Access allows simple manipulation and visualisation of data; contains forms to browse and edit the data•map interconnection is based on the MapInfo technology•special procedures are programmed for calculation of hydraulic parameters of rocks

Hydrogeochemical map:

•the main objective is text assessment and map expression of chemical content and qualitative properties of groundwaters in the regions, including evaluation of anthropogenic influence•basic information in the map express qualitative and geochemical criteria of groundwater of first aquifer•additional thematic maps are created for description of other important properties of groundwaters(degree of anthropogenic influence, content of dissolved solids)

INTERREG IIIA

Determination and harmonisationof background and threshold concentrations:•specific objective of the project adds an information on chemical status of groundwater in accordance with Water Framework Directive•procedure of determination of significant concentrations regards complex approach usually combining geochemical analyses, statistical assessment, legislative approach, respectively•calculation is realized for TDS, ammonium ions, sulphates, nitrates, chlorides and selected trace elements (Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Se, Pb, Hg, Ba, Al, Sb)
