Poppy Templates & Instructions

small poppy—4 pieces

large poppy—4 pieces

1. Print template page.

2. Cut out four shapes for the size poppy you

want to make.

3. Trace the four-lobed red pieces on to red con-

struction paper. Cut out shapes.

4. Ball up the red cut-outs to create wrinkles in

the paper. (Poppies have a crinkly texture).

Flatten papers out again.

5. Trace the two black dots on to black construc-

tion paper. Cut out both circles.

6. Cut some slits all around the edges of the black

circles. You should have at least 10 slits. Make

the slits about 1/4—1/3 in but don’t cut all the

way to the middle.

7. Assemble your four pieces by stacking them

from largest to smallest. Start with the largest

red piece on bottom, add the second red piece

so it lays in the middle. Then add the larger

black circle. End with the smallest black circle

on top.

8. Staple your pieces together. Or you can use

glue or tape as you stack them together.

Making a Paper Poppy

Print template page.

Cut out the four shapes for the size poppy you

want to make.

Trace the four-lobed red pieces on to red felt.

Cut out shapes.

Trace the two black dots on to black felt, or hold

dot on felt, and cutout.

Cut some slits all around the edges of the black

circles. Try to make at least 8 slits. Make the slits

about 1/4—1/3 in but don’t cut all the way to

the middle.

Assemble your four pieces by stacking them

from largest to smallest.

Start with the largest red piece on bottom, add

the second red piece so it lays in the middle.

Then add the larger black circle. End with the small-

est black circle on top.

Making a Felt Poppy

Thread your needle with black

thread.

Use a five to ten stitches to secure

your pieces together. Starting from

the back, stitch through all four

pieces. Knot thread on back side.

(Your knotted thread may pull through the

felt. Don’t pull your first stitch tight but leave

a nice, long tail. Use the tail to help tie your

final knot.)

You can stop here and leave your

poppy flat if you’d like.

If you want some shape to your

poppy, you can make some basting

stitches in the red felt.

Start thread on back side of flower.

Working around the center of the

flower, carefully make 8 to 12

basting stitches. (Fold the black circles

back as you work around to make it

easier to make stitches.)

Carefully pull thread to gather

material. Pinch material to hold

shape and knot thread.

Turn poppy over and fluff the black

center. You can also shape red

flowers a bit by hand.

All done! Great job!
