Introduction

Is your child ready for a tech timeout? The sections in this book describe a wide variety of ideas for steering children away from computers, smartphones, and TV . Each activity provides plenty of screen-free fun! Each activity provides plenty of screen-free fun . As children go through this book, have them keep an eye out for red letters and this racecar scattered through the pages . They can keep track of them to complete activities at the end of the “Solve It” and “Find It” sections!

Create ItGet creative! Your child will glue, tape, draw, paint, snip, sculpt, and weave to complete a craft project . You may want to stock up on some of the following items that will be needed for this section: paper (including heavy paper, such as cardstock), colored construction paper, tinfoil, bubble wrap, crayons or colored pencils, glue, tape, scissors, paper plates, tempera paint, watercolors, brushes, yarn, and pipe cleaners .

Solve ItThe activities in this section require little more than a pencil and your child’s brain . Many of the puzzles put your child’s elementary knowledge of the alphabet, numbers, and beginning words to the test . Other puzzles require a keen sense of observation .

Find ItThe hunt is on! Whether indoors, outdoors, or on the page, these activities will have your child focused on tasks that require looking, finding, and collecting .

Play It Get your child up and moving! This section is filled with exercises and other physical activities that should get heart rates up and burn off energy . Whether it is running, hopping, dancing, or stretching, your child is sure to get a healthy workout .

1. Cut a strip of paper 1 inch wide. Wrap it around the cardboard roll. Trim off any extra paper.

2. Cut more 1-inch strips in different colors.

3. Arrange the strips in a pattern.

4. Glue each strip around the cardboard roll.

5. Punch a hole close to one end of the roll. Bend a pipe cleaner in half and stick the middle in the hole. The part sticking out forms the antennae.

6. Place a pom-pom sticking out of the same end.

7. Glue wiggly eyes on the pom-pom.

Are you full of hot air? It might help for this game!

All you need are straws and plastic drinking cups.

Set a cup on a table. Then, use a straw to blow the cup across the table. You need to aim your blows so the cup goes in the right direction. How quickly can you get across the table? You can time yourself, or you can have a race with a friend.

For an extra challenge, you can set up an obstacle course. Put cans or books on the table. As you blow the cup, you need to move it around or between the obstacles.
