PASTOR'SnotebookNOTEBOOKPASTOR'S

Dear Sanit Michael parishioners,This was a very blessed year for our school community; thank you for all your support of your parish school this year. Earlier this month we proudly sent forth 23 graduates that we have been so for-tunate to journey with during their time at St. Michael. This group of students has enriched our community through their sense of service, their kindness, their deep spirituality, their diligence and their many other gifts. We are so proud of these twenty-three mission-ary disciples and we know that we are sending strong, faith-filled leaders to make a difference in their high school communities. Please pray for each of our graduates! We recently received incredible results from the ACRE assessment (Information for Growth Assessment for Children/Youth Religious Education Assessment) that our 5th and 8th graders completed this past spring. The assessment allows us to see the big picture of how our school’s religious education program is forming our students. Once again, the results show that our students are above the national average in every single cat-egory in both 5th and 8th grades! In fact, the results of our 8th grade graduates show their comprehensive knowledge of our Catholic faith with a class average that is 12.7% above the national average. Overall, these wonderful results point to the value of our religion curriculum and to the degree to which our students are

retaining a deep knowledge of our faith at St. Michael Parish School. As we transition into the summer, I am deeply grateful for all the ways our par-ents have partnered with us to support their children this year. Our parents have been our valuable partners through clear communication with our teachers, supportive conversations with their chil-dren about academic successes and challenges, and their commitment to regular attendance at school. A strong parent presence in the class-rooms, at our school Masses, at MMOs, on field trips, and at school sporting events is also noticed and appreciated. The incredible growth we have wit-nessed in our students results from the healthy dynamic of this home to school partnership.

Three Main Functions of SMP Connect, your one-stop tool to engage in parish life:1. Parishioner Tools – SMP Connect provides parishioners with individual profile pages to manage their engagement with the parish, connect with other parishioners, access their group pages, and see parish events and their volunteer schedules. It will also serve as a parish directory. Through privacy settings parishioners control what information is visible to others parishioners. 2. Leadership Tools – SMP Connect provides many tools for orga-nizing, managing and leading groups/ministries. Each group or ministry will have a group page with the ability to communicate with group members, organize events, share ministry-related files, and provide for special needs for group members. People will only have access to the groups they are involved in. Leaders of the groups will have an app that will help them communicate to group members and manage group calendars on the go.3. Administrative Tools – SMP Connect will serve as a database for our staff and provide staff a number of administrative tools to serve your families and the ministries we oversee. Tools will allow us to better communicate with parishioners, schedule volunteers, provide online registration and RSVP for events, schedule facilities for events, and so much more.If you receive any emails from [email protected], please disregard until we official launch the database to all parish-ioners. Please avoid marking emails as spam.

CONFIRMATION PROGRAM CHANGESFor Pastoral Year 2020, our Confirmation Ministry welcomes all students in 9th through 12th grades who discern they are ready to pre-pare to receive the Sacrament of

Confirmation. This ministry invites parents to journey with their children toward the Sacrament. The confirmand’s commitment includes two evening gatherings per month from October to May. Parents are encouraged to participate in formational gatherings monthly as well. Please Note: Earlier this year, Archbishop Sartain affirmed that the age of reception for the Sacrament of Confirmation is to be lowered to the 7th grade (approximately 13 years of age) for all parishes in the Archdiocese by the year 2023. Saint Michael Parish will make this transition slowly. Here is our plan:Confirmation Preparation will be a one year process starting in 2019–2020. The prerequisite to beginning preparation is at least two years of prior faith formation (within the last 3 yrs), consistent Mass attendance and a letter of intent. Faith formation can be a church formation program or attendance at a Catholic school. We will be offering the Sacrament to the following age groups in the following years:Grades 9–12: 2019–20 Grades: 8–9: 2020–21 Grades 7–8: 2021–22 Grade 7: 2022–23Questions? • Work continues at St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Bank to recruit more volunteers and create a safer donation area.

• SPSE linked up with St. Michael School and worked on flower beds at Plum Street Village and provided fans to the residents.

• Sydney Wolf and Annalise Moreau are revamping Parish Health Ministry —stay tuned for news and events.

PARISH HEALTH MINISTRY Can you share two hours a year of your time? While the concept of parish health minis-try may be new to many, its role is deeply rooted in the Church's healing tradition. Those involved often provide underrep-

resented individuals with a valuable link to health care, and parishioners active in health ministry also become a healing hand of the Church. They become advocates, intercessors and representatives of God's healing love. If you are involved and have knowledge in any health field, would you share two hours of your time this year? We are scheduling a series of lectures on basic health care (dental hygiene, eye care, exercise, nutrition—name it!) and we need your help! Please contact Annalise Moreau or Sydney Wolf for more information and to sign up: [email protected]

ANGEL CANS The St. Michael School Kindergarten children collected and recycled aluminum cans from November through the end of the school year to help build a playground for their friends at the Holy Spirit Center in Juarez. Another Angel Can Story Can by can, each child helped make their small acts of generos-ity and kindness grow

into something bigger than their small individual contribu-tions. Angel Cans provided a heart-changing, joyful learning experience. The children learned to care for God’s creation, recycling a small mountain of cans. They learned that friendship is not confined by borders, as they exchanged letters and drawings with children at the Holy Spirit Center. They learned how kind-ness can grow as family, neighbors and parishioners, inspired by their efforts, also collected cans and made contributions to the project. And they learned that children have the God-given ability to change the world into a kinder, more beautiful, more just place can by can. Thank you to all who helped with Angel Cans!Grand total: 871 pounds of aluminum cans!

OUR COMMON HOME FARMSOCHF is a partnership between St. Martin’s University and Pope John Paul II High School and works with Catholic Community Services (Community Kitchen and Senior Services). Its goal is to ethically produce nutrient-dense food for the community and to get as many people as pos-sible involved in it! By purchasing a share, you will also support the donation of healthy produce into the community through organiza-tions such as Community Kitchen, Senior Services, Sacred Heart’s Emergency Outreach, and the Lacey and Thurston County Food Bank. OCHF's goal is to donate 12,000-15,000 pounds of produce to these organizations this year.Beyond selling CSAs, they also welcome donations, espe-cially donated labor! They will hold a strawberry planting

day in a couple weeks and have about 1000 strawberries to plant! Volunteers will weed, fertilize and prep beds, weed, plant seeds and starts, weed, harvest, weed, snack on fresh produce, and there’s a good chance you could do some weeding. Our Common Home Farms will both help feed the poor and strengthen the natural world. Capital High School's Baccalaureate was great! Everyone seemed to enjoy it, and it was a special night for the kids. A big thank you to those who helped make it a success, particularly Susan Woltman, who suggested, planned and worked through every step behind the scenes, and to Fr. Lou, who led students and their families in such a wonderful celebration.
