Wimbledon Reward Trip

20 students from Years 7 - 9 were rewarded with a trip to Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club as a result of excellent behaviour, effort and attitude towards learning in PE. They had a complete tour of the grounds and museum where they found out all about the history of tennis and Wimbledon.

English Schools Track and Field Cup On Monday 20th May we took our most talented athletes across KS3 and KS4 to the English Schools Track and Field Cup at Chelmsford Sport and Athletics Centre. The students were competing against various schools from across Essex and London who have a wealth of athletics history and facilities within their school. The students performed very well with the majority of our athletes finishing in the top two or three of the track races, with a couple of students winning their races out right. The field events proved to be more difficult but there were still some outstanding performances. Unfortunately, we did not qualify for the next round of the competition but this was down to us not being able to take a full team due to transport arrangements. Despite this the students performed very well and will be able to take the experience forward to the borough athletics event that takes place in a few weeks‟ time.

PE Rewards Trip

At the start of the half term holidays the PE Department organised a rewards trip to Twickenham to watch the England Rugby team play the Barbarians. It was a fantastic experience to watch the country‟s best rugby players in action and some brilliant tries were scored. The students who attended the trip have consistently put 100% effort in to every PE lesson and as a result were nominated by their PE teacher to go on

the trip. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and there are still a number of reward trips taking place before the end of the year for you to take part in.

Sports Leaders Reward Trip

Year 10 Sports Leaders students were rewarded for their continual hard work and efforts throughout the year. Selected students were invited to participate in an afternoon of high ropes, zip wires, fan descenders and climbing walls at Rope Runners, Brentwood.

London Youth Games Joshua Olusola, Malcolm Ennin, Marien Balla, Ahsan Moraby, Lewis Smith, Ore Olayinka Armandas Smailys, Sam Kesinro and Ben Lazaro represented Barking and Dagenham in hockey at the London Youth Games on Sunday 16th June. Despite having very little experience in playing hockey, they volunteered to take part which resulted in Barking and Dagenham having a team in the competition for the first time since the games started! They were model students and I was so proud to be a part of their team as they demonstrated great sportsmanship throughout the day. We didn‟t win this year but next year we‟ll be back! Well done boys.

Borough Athletics On Tuesday 11th June we took a selection of our best athletes from Year 7 and 8 over to Mayesbrook Athletics Arena to compete in the borough athletics event. The students performed very well across both year groups with some outstanding performances coming from the Year 7 girls relay team (Margaret Adesunloro, Gloria Boateng, Daisy Nzengo and Yasmine Raji) who won gold in their event, and Margaret Adesunloro who also won gold in the 200m. A full list of medals won are listed below but overall the students can be very pleased with the effort and commitment they showed on the day and at the training sessions leading up to the event.

National School Sports Week June 24th – June 28th was National School Sports Week and we had lots of events going on around school to celebrate. On Monday morning we had an assembly where the cheerleaders did a fantastic performance in preparation for their competition on Friday. On Monday afternoon the whole of Year 7 took part in a Dodgeball tournament and 7G were the champions. On Tuesday all of Year 8 headed over to Barking Rugby Club to play in a tag-rugby tournament and 8F were the overall winners. And on Wednesday Year 9 had the afternoon in PE with the chance to take part in yoga, fitness, rugby and hockey. The Sports and Dance Council made a great contribution to the week with their refereeing and score keeping skills. As part of their tournament Year 7 also raised £65.25 for the British Heart Foundation. The theme of the week was to try a new or different sport, so get involved!! Aegon Masters Tennis Competition Congratulations to the following students who have participated in the Aegon Masters Tennis competition. Our team performance has improved every week and it has been great to see so many students enjoying tennis after school. London Bike Polo Competition On Thursday 27th June, I took a group of Year 7 and 8 students to the 2nd annual London Bike Polo competition. After finishing in 3rd place overall last year, we had high expectations this year. Unfortunately, we were knocked out by Sydney Russell in the quarter finals in extra time by a „golden goal‟.

JRCS Crowned Grand Champions #

The JRCS Wolves won their 3rd consecutive cheerleading showcase on Friday 28th June at the ExCel Centre London. There was fierce competition in the secondary school category with schools involved from all over East London. The students worked extremely hard in the build-up to the Talent Central Summer Showcase and those hours of commitment paid off in a perfect performance. The judges‟ comments were all extremely positive and a Gold Award was presented. The Wolves were then crowned Grand Champions for the 3rd consecutive showcase. A special thank you to Meso Izuchukwu and Emily Gill, the cheerleading coach, for their dedication and commitment to cheerleading this year.

JJ Jegede visits JRCS

On Monday 1st July the Sports and Dance Council had a workshop with GB long jumper JJ Jegede. He came in to talk to them about being successful in sport and they reflected on projects that they‟ve been running around school as part of the Sky Living for Sport project. The PE Department also want to say a big thank you to the Sports and Dance Council for their efforts throughout National School Sports Week. Well done guys!

‘Run for the Bus’ The PE Department would like to thank all staff and students for their participation in the „Run for the Bus‟ which helped to raise money for a new school mini bus. The bus continually moved around the school playing field all day with a number of class groups and staff participating at different times. We would like to personally thank Zak Barrett in 7A who raised £20 and Abigail Hall in 8F who raised £15 for their efforts.

Silver and Gold D of E groups brave challenging conditions in expedition training!

During the Easter break, I accompanied twelve students from JRCS and Eastbury School who were undertaking their Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition training. I was really glad that the training had not taken place the week before, as I believe it was even colder then! The Silver Group were walking for their expedition and their training was led by Mr Watchman. He reported that they are a strong group, but faced some very challenging weather conditions, including trudging through knee deep snow and encountering lots of rain and mist on their expedition. They came through the whole experience safely and are now prepared for

anything the Lake District can throw at them (hopefully lots of rays of sunshine) on their qualifying expedition later this term. They worked very hard last week and certainly deserve better weather at the end of term. We wish them well with their qualifying expedition on 16th – 18th July. The Silver Group were: Keyala Fenn 11F, James Green 11G, Marlette Perez 12E, Katherine Pirie, Tobi Nathan and Jack Eagles (all 11H). The Gold Group joined four young people from the Vibe Youth Centre for their training for a four day, three night canoeing expedition. They began with an intensive two days of skills training, with James, one of the Trewern teachers, covering all aspects of controlling a canoe from forward paddling to what to do if you get stuck on a rock mid-river. For the final two days the group were trained by Juliet for their expedition on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal. They learned expedition skills such as poling, canoe sailing and transporting a canoe ashore using a trolley. They were even lucky enough to experience a few sunny spells! We wish them and the group from The Vibe every success with their qualifying expedition on 23rd -26th July. The Gold Group were: James Collins 13B, Stephanie McCluskey (Eastbury), Michelle Swart 12B , Perry Flint 12B, Sarah Hadley 12A, and Sean Logue 12A. Finally, my sincere thanks go out to all those without whom the week would have been impossible; Juliet and James and the staff at Trewern, Julie West and Chris Lane (staff from The Vibe), Josh Ashton and Egle Bernotaite (ex-students and gold award holders who came along to help), Terry Dignam (as well as being a member of JRCS staff, also an ex-student and gold award holder), Ms Duncan who helped with the silver group and led many intense late evening card games, and last but by no means least, Mr Watchman who expertly led and trained the Silver Group in some ridiculous weather for this time of year!

Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh Award Practice Expeditions

Many congratulations to all those who have completed their final practice expedition by spending a day and a half walking with all their kit through the Enfield and Lea Valley area. A huge thank you goes out to all the staff and helpers who gave up their own time over a weekend to support the students with their expedition training over the last two weeks. They were, Mr Armour, James Collins (Year 13 helper), Josh Ashton (ex-student helper), Bill Lockton (volunteer helper), Ms Meek, Mr Hill, Mr Watchman and, last but by no means least, Mr Kirkbride who took over and ran the weekend for Mr Hargreaves‟ group in his absence.

Jack Petchey Achievement Awards Ceremony

Some of our outstanding students from Jo Richardson Community School were presented with prestigious Jack Petchey Achievement Awards at a special ceremony held at the Broadway Theatre on 30th April.

The event honoured Achievement Award winners aged 11-18 who received medallions to go with their framed certificate and a cheque for £200 which has already been presented. Our students were nominated by their peers and leaders, winning awards for a variety of achievements. Prize money has been spent on extra resources and equipment in their chosen subjects and for further training of our new Peer Mediation Service run by students.

Miss Hale was also celebrated with a Leader Award for her tireless work, excellent organisation and inspirational leadership of both students and staff especially in the build up to and following on from the 2012 Olympic Games.

Winners included: Lewis Sharp – Ex-student, David Preston-Rider – Ex-student, Joshua Bolton - Year 10 Ajijia Oweh - Year 10 , Paige Smith - Year 11, Nilson Alia - Year 10, Stephanie Cullinane - Year 11 Nicholas Lord - Year 10, Louise Lazarus - Year 11. ACHIEVE Student This week Mabel Olonisaye-Collins 10F was accepted onto the BAME University of Cambridge Communities Programme. This is a three year summer school programme for Black African and Minority Ethnic students who are predicted at least 5A* at GCSE. The aim of the programme is to prepare students for the path to Higher Education and to provide challenge in either an Arts or Science path. Mabel has chosen to follow the Arts path and will be participating in a variety of sessions related to English Language and Literature and the Humanities. The Year 10 team are really proud of her achievements and wish her the best of luck this summer.

Exchange student My name is Sara and I live in France. I always had an interest in England and I am lucky to have a family in London. So with the help of Mrs Byrne and many others I managed to come for two months to study at Jo Richardson Community School. At the moment I live at my cousins and I am in her form.

It was hard at the beginning and I still miss my family in France but I am really happy to spend time with Shaydah, my cousin and her friends. She helps me a lot and this experience has made us closer. However, your school is so different from mine that I sometimes feel lost but I don‟t regret my choice and I will never forget my time in England.

Sara Lavassani (9D) My name is Shaydah and I am in 9D. I was really excited when my cousin told me she was thinking of coming to England, to an English school to learn English. We are doing an exchange, which means that I might go to France in the future. It will help me with my French and as I took French as an option, it will help.

I can talk to Sara about girly things and about school as well, it‟s been nice that she got to meet my friends.

Shaydah Azmayesh 9D Rivers of the world

Last week a group of students from Year 8 got an amazing opportunity to work with professional artists. The students took part in a project called “rivers of the World”. This is JRCS‟s second time to be involved in the project. In the first part of the project there was a focus on the UK and this time there was a focus on Dubai which is where our partner school in the project is located. The students created artwork based on the theme of Arabian nights. Two professional artists ran the workshop; they showed students a variety of techniques involving paper which the students then applied to create their artworks. Their pieces will be combined to create an overall banner which will be put on display in Central London. Some of their artwork is now on display on the international board in school.

Trip to Boulogne The Year 7 students had a fantastic time in Boulogne on Wednesday the 10th and Thursday the 11th

of July 2013. They travelled by coach and on the Eurotunnel to reach Calais (Northern France) where they visited a bakery and got to make some croissants. The students also learnt how to make high quality bread using a traditional wood oven. The students then had lunch in the old town of Boulogne and went on to visit the Nausicaa see life centre. After meeting with the sharks and skates, we all went to do some shopping in a huge hypermarket. This one day trip to France was an incredible experience for all the students who all had their heads full of positive memories on the next day. Year 7 Trewern Visit On 28th April – 3rd May a group of Year 7 students visited Trewern Outdoor Education Centre on the Welsh borders for week of activities. The aim of the trip was to boost everyone‟s self-esteem and confidence. Being away from home for a week also meant that the group had to be a little more independent, and learn to organise things for themselves. Everyone had to do chores around the house from making beds to washing up, sweeping and tidying up, emptying bins and setting tables. During the day the group was split into three smaller groups and took part in mountain walking, canoeing, climbing, forest skills, obstacle course and gorge walking. We also all joined together for a day at the beach which involved body boarding, rock pooling, and building some brilliant sand castles, and finally some delicious fish and chips. The students involved in the trip behaved brilliantly during the week and I really hope that they thoroughly enjoyed the trip. We shall be celebrating with a Year 7 Trewern Assembly after half-term as well as the Trewern Celebration Evening for all the students involved and their parents, carers and families, which will be held on Thursday 13th June at 6pm.

Reward Breakfast

Last week the Key Stage 3 students who achieved Platinum and Gold in the reports rankings were invited to breakfast with Mr Smith. These students have had their effort, behaviour and homework rated as excellent by the vast majority of their teachers; we commend them for this. There are two more sets of rankings to go before the end of term, so we hope to see some other new faces at Mr Smith‟s reward breakfast!

Community Team

On Monday 3rd June The Community Team (Aderonke Adesanoye, Tolu Aderinto, Elizabeth Olabode, Anjolaade Ogunwolu, Magdalena Derlukiewicz and Stephanie Taylor) along with Ms Hector and PC Harris, visited Godwin Primary School to inform 120 Year 5/6 students about the dangers of „Gangs and Violence‟. We presented a PowerPoint and a number of scenarios to demonstrate different aspects of gangs, as well as getting the children to physically act out role plays so they could have a better understanding of the different situations. We enjoyed presenting the workshop to the children and seeing the great role-play situations they came up with. We are hoping to expand our workshop to different schools throughout our community, since they were so interested throughout and also enjoyed asking PC Harris questions about his work on gangs in the local community in the Q&A session at the end.

Donation to Barnado’s Jo Richardson Community School students have donated a large number of our old printers to Barnardo‟s children‟s charity so they can be sold in their shops to raise money for the UK‟s leading children‟s charity. This idea was the brainchild of Andrew Dawes, Senior IT Technician. Like Barnados, we at Jo Richardson Community School believe in children regardless of their circumstances, gender, race, disability or behaviour and we wanted to show our support for this amazing organisation who change the lives of so many vulnerable young people. Interview teams A well organised and professional team of Year 9 – 13 students have continued to work hard on the Student Voice Interview panel. Business Studies, English, Maths, History, Chemistry, RE and Deputy Head teacher candidates were grilled by the panel during the summer term. Emily Vincent, Ella Perry Leigh Smith, Korode Salami, Ronke Adesanayo, Daniel John, Sam Kesinro, Jack Fawsitt, Bethany Knight, Nick Eleftheriou, Phoebe Chandler, Reece Rolls, Ella Perry Leigh Smith, Elicia Pain, Chloe Jayne Evans, George Bird and Rumaanah Tabbassum. Greenpeace visit the Eco Team Due to being an active member of the student voice Eco team, on Wednesday 22nd May I arranged an event for my team to make them aware of wider and more global ecology problems around the world. I contacted and invited a Greenpeace speaker in to the school to give a talk on global problems and how we as a school can help even in the slightest way. This was a fantastic experience to have met and spoken to a volunteer at Greenpeace International. Not only did we learn more about what they do to help the world around us but also what we can to do help! Abi provided us with a brilliant and interesting experience and the team and I owe her many thanks! This experience has given me the confidence to organise and lead an event and I hope to do more of this in the future. It is important that we look after the local and global environment and this has given us a lot of things to think about to take back to our meetings. Paige Moon - Year 10 Eco Team

Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge On Friday 17th May, two Year 10 students represented JRCS at this year‟s Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge borough final held at Sydney Russell. This is a very prestigious and unique event which allows students to speak in public on their chosen topics to a wide and varied audience.

Kimberley Okoye 10F and Daniel Fajinmi 10F were selected from 25 students to take part in this year‟s final. Kimberley‟s speech titled “It doesn‟t have to end like this” was powerful and well received by the audience in attendance. She spoke about teen suicide and the impacts they have on loved ones. Daniel‟s speech “What do we waste?” was well crafted and engaged the audience with his clear voice and appropriate tone. His speech informed the audience not to waste their time. Whilst we were expecting to do well in this competition, unfortunately both Kimberley and Daniel faced strong competition on the night and didn‟t win on this occasion.

I am extremely proud of both of these students as they worked very hard to prepare their speeches before the event and delivered on the night of the final with flawless performances. I would like to congratulate both these students on their efforts and I hope that this is the beginning for both of them to pursue a career in public speaking.

Also, at this event Arnold Okungu 11F was asked to be the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. This was due to him winning the competition last year.

Arnold used humour to win over the audience easily. I would like to say well done to him also as his role was challenging on such short notice and he was exceptional throughout the night.

The Business Show The AS Business Studies class attended the Excel Exhibition Centre with thousands of budding entrepreneurs for The Business Show on Thursday 6th June. The idea was young business people would get the chance to network in a real business environment. There were talks from guest speakers as well and the students, Miss Wright and Mr Davies listened to inspirational stories of success and failure from Levi Roots, Caprice and Doug Richard (a favourite entrepreneur of the Business Department who has visited JRCS several times before) Sharlan McCoy, Michelle Swart and Charlie Sanford approached Mr Richard at the end of his speech and asked if there was any chance they could have some work experience with his organisation. He seemed keen and told them to get in touch via the school. We also listened to an interesting talk from a Director of Facebook and she explained how businesses can use their social networking site for business to boost the awareness of their brand and therefore ultimately increase sales. Overall the students enjoyed the day and were pleased to share the same air as some wealthy and highly successful business people. The Fete and Team Business The BTEC Business Studies students were on full alert on Friday 5th July for the Summer fete. A lot of the students in the class came into school on the Friday specifically to help Miss Wright set up the stalls for the fete. In particular Darita Odou created promotional materials prior to the event. Robert Kilminster, was fundamental to the successful smooth setting up of the stalls. Steven White was an excellent problem solver on the day and no job was too big or too small. Jaspreet Kaur, Benjamin Boakes, Kasim Kaya and Herve Matondo all helped out as well. Other students who came to help were Charlie Sanford who ended up selling tickets for the rides when the queues got too big and Emerald Thomas who came in especially to run a stall. Omar Omar and Fiona Lewis who left JRCS in the Summer after securing Distinctions on the BTEC Business course also came in to take photographs and run a pink lemonade stall. All in all the business students did us proud. They really showed how far they have developed their interpersonal skills and event management techniques. Well done and thank you! Emily Fallows and Tayla Alexander report on the Year 13 History trip to Berlin: We had a great time in Berlin, visiting numerous historical monuments including the Reichstag, Olympic Stadium, TV Tower, and the surprisingly deceptive Holocaust Memorial. Although a few students went off-piste at times, we didn‟t get caught in the rain, as the weather was lovely; perfect boating weather! On the first evening, Tayla and Emily successfully hustled Mr McInerney and Mr Jenner in a game of pool, causing some serious forehead perspiration, they should have realised Tayla was an epic pool player, and not one to be messed with. We had a very eye opening visit to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp and, after the ridiculous train journey, long walks, and flights, some yoga was much needed! One of the biggest highlights was Miss Scott managing to fall over, onto all fours, not once, but twice in the middle of a busy German road. Another „best bit‟ was the huge game of „had‟ involving the whole class, teachers included. Mr McInerney is a shockingly fast runner, as Franklin discovered.

The Fernsehturm TV tower was voted overall as the best experience in Germany, as it gave us the opportunity to view the beautiful Berlin from 207 metres above ground! It was very off-piste! The group took countless cheesy „fist punch‟ photos in front of some of the mind blowing places Berlin has to offer. The hostel we stayed in was lovely. Also, the majority of students visited a „brunch‟ buffet, where the three teachers demolished at least 20 plates of food between them with James not so far behind!

To wrap it up, I know you‟re all busy, we had the best time, and on behalf of Tayla, Emily, Franklin, Habeeba, Paige, Daniel, Jamie, Olivia, Asli and the awesome James „JC‟ Collins, we‟d like to thank the teachers for taking us! It was the perfect end to a great time at JRCS.

Emily Fallows and Tayla Alexander Year 13 Sixth Form News for Year 12 students HE/Post 18 week began on Monday 8th July. We concentrated on university and career options and students were expected to be in school for that whole week and for all the activities. We have already visited one university and we visited the University of Essex on Monday. There was a wide range of other workshops and activities on offer. I hope that many students will take the opportunity to visit university open days and to research career and higher education options over the Summer. Previous students have found the week informative and inspiring, I hope this year was the same.

Sixth Form Induction For two days Year 11 students came to school to prepare themselves for Sixth Form study. There were trial lessons, tutorial activities and meetings to join in with. The aims of the days were:

To prepare students for the routines and procedures of Sixth Form life

To help students feel welcomed and comfortable within the Sixth Form Year 10 preparing for Sixth Form JRCS students will have the chance to “taste” a Sixth Form lesson in a range of subjects from Monday 15th – Wednesday 17th July. The students have been having a range of assembly presentations to explain the options available for them after Year 11. Not long after starting Year 11 in September, they will be thinking about applications to Sixth Form and other pathways.

Students have been given the chance to opt into the taster subjects which they currently do not have the chance to study at GCSE but will have for A Level or Level 3 BTEC. Over 110 students have taken up this opportunity and will try out the subjects next week. The subjects that are on offer are BTEC Health & Social Care; BTEC Travel & Tourism; AS Economics; AS Government & Politics; AS Psychology; AS Sociology, plus the three distinct sciences AS Biology; AS Chemistry and AS Physics. This has been a successful event in the past couple of years and has given the students a better understanding about the subjects before they put them on their option form!!

Chatam Docks Year 7 Trip Every year, for the past six years we have taken Year 7 students to the Historic Dockyard in Kent. Students get an opportunity to walk through the dockyard where WW2 memorabilia is kept.

They also get to go through the HMS Ocelot which is a submarine that was heavily involved in trialling submarine equipment, acting as a target for aircraft and assisting ship trials and training. HMS Ocelot particularly contributed to important work testing Mark 24 torpedoes, HMS Cavalier which was a destroyer ship used in WW2, it is now preserved at Chatham as a memorial to the 143 British destroyers and over 11,000 men lost at sea during the war. Students also saw how rope was made for the ships and also how canons were fired to preserve/capture ships.

Students as well as teachers enjoy this trip. IJust wanted to say a huge thank you for the trip. My form said that they had enjoyed themselves a lot and I did as well (though my arms are sore this morning after the submarine!)‟

Year 9 Barking and Dagenham Construction Skills Day To prepare our Year 9 students who have opted to take GCSE BTEC Construction, the department takes at least 14 students to the annual Barking Dagenham College Construction skills day. The activities they take part in are as follows

• Painting and Decorating • Plumbing • Electrical • Motor Vehicle • Plastering • Bricklaying • Carpentry

Year 9 Design Technology Structures Day As part of the whole school trips days in October, the Design Technology Department hold a Year 9 structures day within the department. Students participate in activities which focus on improving their team work skills. Through teamwork they get to develop their understanding of structures by designing and developing a model of a structure that will support a weight off the ground. Students understand how to work efficiently using a set amount of resources. They are also informed of different Career choices, options in DT available and possible career paths after secondary school

Year 10 Silverstone Grand Prix Trip Students that opt for BTEC Engineering in Year 10 get the opportunity to attend the Silverstone Grand prix trip in June/July. This trip has been running for three years now and is very successful. Students get the opportunity to watch the qualifying / main race on Saturday and Sunday. They can walk round the whole circuit which takes around and hour and a half to complete. Students also get the opportunity to see other Grand Prix races. At the Beckett‟s corner on the day of the main race, students get to see the RED Arrows perform their signature stunts at quite a close range.
