At the heart of our wonderful community
REV TOMLINSON SECONDED TO NEW ROLEREVEREND CANON David Tomlinson, of St John’s Church, has been chosen to lead the Diocese of Dur-ham’s bid for funding to help grow the church.
Bishop of Durham, Paul Butler has appointed Shil-don’s popular vicar as the Senior Resourcing Church Leader to develop a net-work of up to ten Resourc-ing Churches, which will aim to engage with com-munities to boost church numbers. He will also lead the bid for funds for a mul-ti-million pound proposal as part of the Church of England’s Strategic Devel-opment Funding.
Rev Canon Tomlinson will take on the new role two and a half days a week until the end of the year.
During that time, some of his current parish duties will be taken on by Rev Peter Robson, while his Area Dean duties will be taken up by Rev Matt Tar-ling From St Paul’s Church in Spennymoor.
David said, “I am thrilled and excited to be involved and I am very much up for the challenge it represents.
“This next stage of devel-opment funding will allow us to be radical in our approach to Church growth, challeng-ing the status quo and step-ping outside the norm in the Anglican Church of having a survival mentality.

THE CATS Youth Theatre Group’s Beauty and the Beast Easter Pantomime was a great success, despite the terrible wintry weather.
A spokesperson said, “The snow didn’t stop the show at all. In fact, the group had a near sell out audience each night and on Sunday afternoon.
Derrick Robinson, who runs the theatre group
said, “I would like thank not only the young peo-ple and adult volunteers who braved the weather to perform the production, but their parents and fam-ilies and members of the community, including Cllr. Shirley Quinn, the town’s Mayor and her family for supporting the young peo-ple’s production.”
Cllr Quinn added, “Once again the young people of
Shildon have dazzled us, with their performance of Beauty and the Beast.
“I took along my nephew and niece who thoroughly enjoyed the performance and are looking forward to the next. I would like to thank Derrick and his team for all the work they put in on a volunteer basis to make these shows happen.
“I also want to thank all our young stars and dupli-

ence in a settlement that up to that time had been dominated by Method-ism.
Built on rising ground, with dressed sandstone external walls, brick lined interior and slate roof, the memorial stone was laid in March 1868 and the church consecrated in October of that year.
Costing £3,000 to con-struct, and seating up to 500, the three chiming bells and church clock were presented by Joseph Pease. A new parish of All Saints was formed on 13th July 1869, with land taken from the parishes of St Andrew’s Auckland, St Michael’s Heighington and St John’s Shildon.
In 1884 a lancet window was filled with stained glass and an organ was erected in 1885 by sub-scription. A Church of England School was built near the church in 1875 and a vicarage was to fol-low around 1883.
For over 130 years All Saints was to play a full role in the life of its local community, hosting numerous marriages, baptisms and funerals, supporting the people of New Shildon in good times and bad, including through two World Wars, with its wall adorned by memorial plaques and rolls of honour.
In 1920 the church-yard was extended, and a war memorial stone, the Heworth cross, was erected in memory of the New Shildon men who lost their lives in the Great War. Granted Grade 2 Listed Status, on 24th February 1986, All Saints closed its doors to the public in 1999; in com-
A BUILDING whose spire continues to dominate its local skyline celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.
Whilst the future of the of the former All Saints church remains less cer-tain, its illustrious past underpins the expansion of New Shildon and the formation of the parish that bears its name.
When in 1866 a com-mittee, comprising sen-ior representatives of the Railway Company and local landowners, took the decision to raise funds to build a Church of England church, New Shildon was still densely clustered either side of the railway, which was its very lifeblood.
However, in the decades that followed its con-struction, New Shildon would expand uphill, with new streets straddling the length of Redworth Road, until the new church was joined to the town.
Some of these new streets bore names clearly linked to the town’s
railway heritage; such as Bouch Street and Adam-son Street, and for the first time significant areas of ground were given over to allotment gardens.
In the years leading up to the Great War, New Shildon had become a vibrant industrial town, driven forward by the employment brought by the largest wagon works in the British Empire.
As a wealthy patron, Lord Eldon donated £500 towards the construction, also gifting two acres of land as well as land for a burial ground.
The building was designed in the Commis-sioner Gothic style by prominent architectural practice, J P Pritchett.
Whilst Pritchett’s design was a model of simplicity, with only two large spaces, the chancel and the nave, it was its elaborate square shaped tower with octagonal broach spire that gave the building its visual impact, establishing a strong Church of England pres-

mon with many churches falling victim to the per-fect storm of falling con-gregations and rising maintenance costs.
The church bells, ini-tially purchased by an antiques dealer, along with the clock mecha-nism, were acquired by the Keltek Trust in Octo-ber 2001 and relocated to three other churches in Lincolnshire, Notting-hamshire and Dorset. The majority of the significant artefacts were removed from the building, includ-ing the relocation of a stained glass window to St John’s Church.
As to the Heworth
stone, it now stands on a paved area opposite the Railway Institute on Redworth Road; moved to its new location and rededicated in 2002. The cemetery now houses a headstone shaped stone detailing the relocation of the memorial.
With outline consent to convert into a dwelling, subject to listed build-ing approval, the church stands today somewhat forlorn, largely a shell, but its spire still reaches out to the sky and the clock face on its tower refuses to move with the times, forever reading one o’clock.

“Demonstrations where the skaters perform to an audience helps to boost the skaters’ confidence.
“We were lucky to have skaters aged from four years to adults taking part and they all skated very well.
“We’d like to say a big thank you to the friends and family who supported the event. We raised £61.81 from door entry, a cake sale and a tombola.”
Spectrum Roller Skat-ing Club always welcome new skaters, whatever the age or ability.
They have beginner les-sons on Saturdays from 2.30pm-3.30pm and a roller disco on Fridays from 7.30pm-8.30pm, both at Sunnydale Leisure Centre in Shildon.
For more information, check out the club’s social network pages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram or call Tracy Stevens 07891 461958.
SPECTRUM SKATERS performed a Skate Idol demonstration at Sun-nydale Leisure Centre, Shildon on Saturday 10th March and raised money for the club in the pro-cess.
The skaters had the opportunity to develop their creative skills by putting together the Skate Idol performance them-selves, creating their own skating routines to their favourite music idols with music ranging from Dolly Parton to My Chemical Romance.
“The team created solo, duo, trio and group cho-reography,” explained coach Tracy Stevens. “I

“Together we will pro-vide a first-class environ-ment to develop the skills and techniques of those looking to forge a career in football and sport.
“The Foundation has developed strong com-munity links in Shildon for a number of years with the aim of raising aspira-tions for young people in the town, and now we can offer these opportunities across the North East.”
A number scholars have already represented Shildon at various levels, with Monkwearmouth’s double-winning captain Aaron Duell making his first-team debut in the recent Durham Challenge Cup tie against Consett.
From season 2018-19, Shildon AFC’s Devel-opment and Under 18 squads will utilise the Beacon’s state-of-the-art roof-top football barn and outdoor pitches for train-ing sessions alongside the Foundation’s Scholar-ship teams and Commu-nity Clubs, sharing best coaching practice.
David Dent, Shildon AFC Chairman, added: “This is an exciting partner-ship for Shildon AFC and a really important mile-stone in our ambitions to create a sustainable club which will play at the highest level it possibly can within the National League system.
Our partnership with the Foundation of Light
gives us access to some of the best young talent within the North East and strengthens our commit-ment to creating oppor-tunities for young adults and children in the town.”
Foundation of Light’s Player Pathway provides all players with the oppor-tunity to access a coach-ing programme that ena-bles them to learn and develop new skills in a fun and challenging environ-ment.
Talented players from the charity’s school sports delivery, evening and weekend and holiday courses are invited to train with Player Develop-ment squads and Sunder-land Regional Talent Club, the North East’s elite girls centre of excellence.
The pioneering Football Scholarship programme was established in 2016 through a partnership between Foundation of Light, South Tyneside Col-lege and Monkwearmouth Sixth Form College.
Earlier this season, scholars representing Monkwearmouth and Shildon signed contracts with Premier League side Burnley FC, while every learner who has applied for University has received unconditional offers.
More than just football, Coaches Academy gives youngsters the qualifica-tions and skills needed to pursue a career in the sports coaching industry.
The Foundation is hold-ing open trials for the Scholarship programme during the Easter holi-days. For more informa-tion, call 0191 5515077 or email [email protected].
