especially when the weather isso nice."Experienced enough to judgeabout the organization of theOlympic games (he participatedat three previous Gamesbefore), Brian emphasized the

high level of security at theGames in Sochi, "It is so simpleand not as obtrusive as it was,for example, at the XIX OlympicWinter Games 2002 in SaltLake City. Here you feel safe, but do not

CROSS-INTERVIEW

Isadora Williams

Figure skating, Brazil

1  It was great, I was so proud to be the first Brazilianin figure skating at the Olympics, I was so happy.

2  It’s so important in figure skating, because youtell a story with the music, and you express yourself.

3  I love this holiday, but unfortunately my Valentine isback home. I’m going to call home and wish everyonewell.

4  It’s very hard to cope with emotions. You’ve

got to shut out the rest of the world and focuson your job, and compete like you do in practice.

5  Te opening ceremony was great, besides, I’veseen lots of beautiful sites, met so many people, andfor sure the best memory will be my performance atthe Games.

 Adrian Diaz

Figure skating, Spain

1  I could not believe it until the next week whenI was on holidays, I just woke up and analyzed. Itwas unique, the dream came true.

2  It is the way we express ourselves, pass to people

what we feel. It is something we are going to workwith the whole season, because if you don’t feelattached to the music, the programme will be fake.

3  I don’t have a girlfriend and, besides, I have 2practices on the 14th. Maybe, I will make a littlesurprise for my partner Sara, but we are not dating.

4  I try not to expect anything great, until theend. Sure, I hope to perform well, but to cope withemotions one should just switch off.

5  I’m impressed with Sochi, everything is amazing,

but the best memory will be if my team-mate XavierFernandex wins a medal.

DISCOVERY

 Valentine's Day

Saint Valentine, the patron saintof lovers, was s a priest who wasmartyred by the Romans on 14February 270. Te emperor ClaudiusII abolished marriage because hethought that married men made poor

soldiers because they did not wantto abandon their family. As a resultValentine encouraged young couplesto come to see him in secret, and toreceive the blessing of marriage. Hewas therefore arrested and imprisoned. While he awaited his execution, he

made friends with the daughter ofhis jailer who was blind. Before beingbeheaded, he gave her heart-shapedleaves with the message, “from yourValentine,” and she could see againfrom that day on.Before Valentine's Day, a pagan feastwas celebrated in mid-February, youngmen picked the name of a young girlout of a box and this was his lover forone year. In 496, the pope banned thisfeast because it disrespected women.o replace it they chose Saint Valentineto be the patron saint of lovers anddecreed that 14 February would be

Valentine’s Day, the day of lovers.

FIELD OF PLAY

Te famous theme from theAddams family composed byAndrew Lippa made our heartsswell as the Russian pair KseniaStolbova and Fedor Klimov spunon the ice.We then found ourselves in themiddle of a winter fairy talecreated by the pair from Germany,Robin Szolkowy and SavchenkoAliona, as they launched intoa jump combination to thesound of the Nutcracker. Teskaters always connect to their

music and take the role of thecharacters in the music, whetherit is the White Swan or JamesBond.Tey don’t just dance to themusic once though, they mustconnect to it as much as the

composer did, and feel at onewith it when they are performingand when they are training.Tey must also make theaudience fall in love with themusic.“For the Olympics, you want

something that’s really

memorable and really epic,” saidGracie Gold, “You want the kindof music and kind of programthat people watch over and overagain in years to come, as theywatch the dance, they rememberthe Olympic moment”. Withpairs and dance, music selectioncan be twice as tricky becauseof individual tastes and acouple’s personal style. Whenthe athletes find the right songit tugs the heartstrings of theperformers and spectators alike.

Much like in Vancouver withessa Virtue and Scott Moirwho danced to the Farrucas byPepe Romero – they were thefirst pair to receive 10 points fora programs component scoreunder the new judging system.

Tey had tremendous graceand flexibility that will neverbe forgotten. Neither will theirwonderful stop in the center ofthe skating rink, where therewas something watching thatno one else could see. Tis

dance was more like theatre a

competition performance andthe pair were more actors thanathletes – taking their time not

just to fulfill the program, but toshow a breathtaking, captivatinglove story.Speaking of records during theVancouver Olympic Games, Kim

Yuna from South Korea must bementioned. In a ladies singlesprogram, as she was skatingto the sounds of Gershwin’sPiano Concerto in F. She madethe most difficult routine look

like a romantic springtime walkthrough a park in Seoul, not agold medal winning performance.Te grace of her jumps and thecomplexity of her choreographyset a new Olympic record of150.06. A record that seems

almost unbreakable. If you look at all the favouritesoundtracks for figure skatingprograms, the true greats seemto emerge such as music from“Te Sound of Music” whichhas been used ever since the

movie was produced in the early

1960s. Also Ravel’s Bolero is aclassic that was made popularby the 1984 Olympic Ice DanceChampions Jayne orvill andChristopher Dean. Also duringevery figure skating competitionseason, skaters everywherewill be seen competing toBeethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata”- the ultimate love melody. Inrecent years we have seen moreand more modern music suchas the James Bond theme andmusic from the Phantom of the

Opera become very popular withskaters. Andrew Lloyd Weberwork was heard for the Russianpair, Volosozhar atiana andrankov Maxim as they won theirgold medal skating to the soundof “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Te

pair mesmerized the audienceand the millions watching athome, the crowd couldn’t stopclapping for several minutes, asthey threw countless bouquetsof flowers onto the ice. It trulywas a dance Saint Valentine

would be proud of.
