Different Ways of Living

3. Varied Climatic Conditions

1. What factors does the weather depend upon ?

A. The weather depends upon the sun, temperature, humidity and winds.

2. Why is the weather hot in the afternoon ?

A. At noon, the sun is directly over our heads. So the rays of the sun fall straight on the

earth. That is the amount of heat is spread only in a small area. So, it is very hot at noon.

3. Why is the weather cool and pleasant in the mornings and evenings ?

A. The Sun's rays fall in a slanting position in the morning and evening. That is, the same

amount of heat is spread over a wide area. That is why the weather is cool and pleasant

in the mornings and evenings.

4. How does the distance from the equator influence the climate of a place ?

A. The temperature decreases as one moves away from the equator towards the poles.

4. How do (i)altitude from the sea level and (ii) distance from the sea, influence the

climate of a place ?

A. (i) The height of a place above the sea level affects the climate. The higher the place,

the cooler it is. High mountains are covered with snow even when they are in the

torrid zone.

(ii) Regions closer to the sea are neither very hot nor very cold. They have moderate

climate.

5. How does rainfall affect the climate of our country ?

A. The rate of rainfall in a palce influences its climate. Rainfall and temperature together

make up the climate of a place. The rainfall and temperature are high in summers and

low in winters in our country.

6. Where does the temperate zone lie ?

A. The temperate zone lies between the Tropic of Cancer and the Arctic Circle in the

Northern Hemisphere and the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle in the

Southern Hemisphere.

8. Where does the frigid zone lie ?

Antarctic Circle and the South pole.

9. What is humidity ?

1. The temperature as one moves away from the equator towards the poles.

2. The rays of the sun fall slantingly in the zone.

3. The zone is very faraway from the equator.
