Social Media Safety: Create a Safe online Profile

Your user-name, e-mail addresses and passwords are your internet security, remember that when you’re setting up an account on any site, forum or social media site you choose. People can use your email address to find you online.

1. Use a different email address for social media account

2. Pick a user-name that is not your e-mail address

3. NEVER POST your e-mail address or any personal details online, people can steal your identity

4. Use a phrase you will remember like Bg00d2y0u for your password. Usually requires 6 letters & numbers

5. Never share your passwords, treat it like a credit or debit card password

6. If you have any doubts or concerns do not join

Social Media Safety: Changing Settings

Social Media Safety: Protecting your PrivacyNever post ANY Personal

information you don't want shared with the world. Every site, forum etc. has a settings or option panel where you can control what others see. It is VERY important to find this and check:

The first rule of social networking: Assume that everything you post is public and accessible to anyone forever. These networks are great for sharing and connecting, not so great for private communication. So think before you post.

Who can read your profile, see pictures and/or location;

Who can see your posts and activities;

What information is shared with external sites and businesses;

Which applications can access your data;

What information your friends can share about you;

Which sites integrate with your social network (for example, Facebook’s Like feature).Created by Foxfire Multimedia (C) 2014

Social Media Safety: Protecting your SelfChoose who you connect with or add as a friend carefully.

Most people you’ll meet online are genuine and decent, but just as in the rest of the world, some are up to no good and enjoy hurting others online. These people may misuse the information you disclosed to damage your reputation in real life, harass you, stalk you, hack your email, even jeopardize your job and physical safety.

Social Media Safety: Dealing with creepers, trolls and stalkers

A creeper is a stranger who goes through your profile to get information on you.

To avoid make sure your profile's or pages are set to private if you do not want strangers seeing it.

A troll is a person who monitors online forums waiting to comment negatively on a post or person in order to try and start an online argument. They bait you with their comment. The people who do this are often known for it and you will see these people's comments on places like public facebook forums

Social Media Safety: Dealing with creepers, trolls and stalkers

Avoiding trolls can be done by simply ignoring their comment publicly and reporting it to the site admins. Take screen shots of the postings on you and save it.

If they continue to harrass you on another site, such as, or the the person has begun cyber-stalking you.

Dealing with a stalker

Keep track of all content directed at you, days, times, take and keep screen shots. Once you have this go to the police and report them immediately.

Recognizing bullying

Social Media Safety: Adult Bully's

Created by Foxfire Multimedia (C) 2014

“Cyber-bullying is when a person uses the Internet and social networking in order to deliberately cause repeated harm to another individual or to embarrass them. This includes threats, sexual harassment or continued unwanted negative contact with a person via email, social networks, forums or instant messaging.”

Cyber-bullies have also been known to post personal information such as phone numbers, private messages, addresses and full names in groups.

The best thing to do when being confronted with a cyber-bully is: 1. Ignore them2. Block their emails or instant messages and never respond to them. 3. Arguing back and forth on a forum, for example, can only drag out the cyber-bullying and can cause the situation to become out of control.4. Keep all messages and content related to the bully, record days and Times, Report it to the police if it doesNot stop

The goal of an adult bully is to gain power over another person, and make himself or herself the dominant adult. They try to humiliate victims, and "show them who is boss.

* Cyberbullying can lead to suicide, even among adults.

Cyber bullying affects victims in different ways than traditional bullying. It can follow a victim everywhere 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from work, to the mall and all the way into the comfort of their home - usually safe from traditional forms of bullying.
