Social Media Skills(for smart, savvy, good-looking people)

James Garrow

Director of Digital Public Health

Philadelphia Department of Public Health

Warning:Things that will not be addressed today:

1) Why you should be using social media.

2) How to get started using social media.

INSTEAD,

I’m here to make you better at using social media.

The State of the Art(because what we do is an art)

…everyone’s on social media…

…except Facebook…

GlobalWebIndex, Q3 2014 Summary

…so where are young folks going?

GlobalWebIndex, Q3 2014 Summary

…why?

…and it’s not just

celebrities…

…but there is a silver lining…

Policy(because CYA, that’s why)

AccessNot posting, not writing, not making

accounts, this is just about a person.

• Who do we give the keys to?

• Who maintains the passwords?

• Who is the person that logs in?

• Where can they log in?

• Is access granted differently for

different accounts?

AuthorizationThis one isn’t about a

person, but an account.

• What service do we

want to be on?

• Why?

• Who approves the

new account?

• What is their criteria

for deciding?

• Are there

opportunities for

reviewing

authorization?

• What are those

criteria?

ApprovalsThis is where the rubber meets the

road. You’ve got your person, you’ve

got your account, now what can you

say?

• What is the process?

• Who is the final decider?

• Is it yes/no or can changes be

recommended/required?

• What about mistakes?

• What about sharing others content

(like retweets)?

• Are there differences in scenarios

(day-to-day vs emergency)?

Management(not your boss, but how you can be the boss)

Scheduling(so you can actually get some

work done every once in a while)

Monitoring(he said WHAT??!!)

…remembered fondly, by me

Multiple Accounts(who am I again?)

Don’t mix work and personal,

Or emergency with silly,

Or the main account with a satellite account.

Message Creation(uhhh, what do I say?)

Twitter Exercise(because laughing at our mistakes together

is way more fun than crying alone)

Go to twitter.com, or your

favorite Twitter app, and

sign in with this

information:

Password: NJDHHS

We are going to be NJDHHS’s

main Twitter account for two

situations

We are going to tweet, in real life,

about these situations.

Then, we’ll review and go over

best practices.

Snowstorm!

1

Part 1: Storm forecast for all of NJ

tomorrow afternoon to evening, 15

to 20” in north and west, 3 to 5” in

extreme south. HEAVY snow for

duration of eight hour event,

starting at 1pm.

1

Part 2: Day of the storm, it’s now

4pm, all State offices were closed

at noon, storm is as bad as it was

forecast.

1

Part 3: Day after the storm,

forecasts were right on with

impacts. Power is out in some

areas due to snows, many roads

are impassable, the state is

basically shut down.

1

Measles!

2

Part 1: Small outbreak at an

amusement park in California.

Initial reports have demonstrated

some transmission, but no

connected cases locally, and none

expected.

2

Part 2: Child in Millburn positively

identified and epi-linked to the

California outbreak. NJDHHS has

a strong suspicion that child

exposed hundreds of students at

local grade school and family

members.

2

Part 3a: A dozen cases identified

in the grade school, with

secondary infection to family

members. This quickly becomes

the largest outbreak in the country.

2

Part 3b: Schools are closed in

Millburn, NJDHHS is planning a

mass vaccination clinic this

weekend to catch all eligible

residents up on their vaccinations.

Wrap-up(quick, think of a question for him)

Future Questions(ask Tom)
