Before You Jump In
• A free, online social networking site.
• Connect: Use it to build your online network –
connecting with supporters and like-minded
organizations.
• Share: Union news and events; share photos,
video and other media; start a discussion and get
instant feedback from supporters.

• 750 million users from a mobile device each month
• More than 10 million users become fans of pages each day
• More than 45 million active user groups exist on the site

• Go to facebook.com.
• Enter your complete name,
email, birthdate, gender and
choose a password.
• Click “Sign Up.”

Creating a Fan Page
• Go to facebook.com/pages/create.
• Select Company, Organization or
Institution.
• Select Non-Profit Organization.
• Choose a name.
• Agree to the terms.
• Click “Get Started.”
• Customize your page by
adding a profile picture
and cover photo.
• Complete the “About”
section.

• Choose a name.
• Invite people to join

• Select your security
settings.

1. URL shortening is a technique in which a
website address/link may be made
substantially shorter in length and still direct to
the required page.

• Use event tools to invite people to an organized event.
How Will You Use New Media?
• Update your new media networks often.
• Be respectful of others and their opinions.
• Give feedback and keep things interactive.
• Use your networks as another tool to educate on
issues, but remember it is not your personal
pulpit.
• Delete inappropriate or disrespectful comments.
• Remember that what’s put on the internet stays
on the internet.
• LIKE and FOLLOW the USW networks!
New Media Dos
• Don’t post ActionCalls – you don’t won’t to tip off
the other side. General information like requests
for phone calls or rally info is okay.
• Don’t post material that’s overtly partisan or
political in nature (Example: Election info).
• Don’t post personal material on official pages.
• Don’t post local union issues on public fan pages
that are not pertinent.
• Don’t embarrass the USW brand or feed into the
anti-union stereotypes with inappropriate material.
