for time immemorial -- huddled together in groups -- our habit of sharing information.

So sit back and forget about the Internet for a while :it all started when barely-human apes learnt to hunt

in packs. Next was the discovery of fire, and our ancestors gathered in front of fires for a millennium after that.

Then came cities and ships, and we traversed the globe, still huddled together for warmth and that general feeling of goodness.

We've hugged each other excitedly at sports events, consoled each other in times of misery, and continually found new ways to form cuddly, warm groups of like-minded individuals. There's always been a group even the squarest of us can fit into—sort of like in a college/Court canteen and used to share jocks/etc.

A PC was, and is, a very personal gadget. When it first became popular sometime in the

'90s, it was something you could use for hours or days—but always alone.

Gaming was addictive, Windows was fun to use. And MS Office let you get work done so much faster than when you still used books. We got addicted.

A far cry from the lonely machine, the PC was now able to put you in touch with people from any where at all. It started with e-mail: if you knew a person's e-mail address, you could send him or her a letter in an instant regard less of geography.

Then IRC had the concept of channels (basically chat rooms), it wasn't long before people started creating channels based on interests. This is perhaps where the world got their first glimpse of “social networking”. There were hundreds of like-minded individ uals talking and sharing information based on interests—in real time.by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant

This has made communication between the strangers easier than ever. Chatting is one of the more popular activities on the Internet- people can talk to anyone across the world.

Introduction of social online networking sites has facilitated communication. These are web-sites where users can create a profile and connect that profile to others to form an explicit personal network.

In its simplest form, the term ‘social network’ refers to a network of people who choose to form ‘links’ between each other, perhaps based on common factors such as values, friendship, ideas, interests or trade.

For some people, ‘social’ networking implies trivia, gossip and non-work related activities. by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant

The professional and personal spheres and have played a key role in the way business is conducted for much longer than, say, the idea of the corporation or the company has existed.

Social networks include everything from project teams to sports teams, communities of practice to working groups, informal old boy networks to women’s bar associations, trade unions to alumni groups, etc. etc., Consider for a moment where you turn for information, knowledge or references.by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant

To maintain old contacts It is beneficial in maintaining friends An easy way to stay in touch with everyone Its awesome... I have got many of my school friends back through communities They are the best medium to be in touch from the rest of world. Best way to kill time with fun These are a good way to increase your contacts. To maintain friendship, and just for time pass. It aids in mending the existing relationship which we never think could happen. Useful in finding friends and exploring new business venues Nice tool to maintain our friends but the strange aspect is that anyone can see your profile Its good to stay connected with our old friends wherever they are... Time pass, connecting friends when they are far away. Good for sharing our views with our friends An easy way to keep in touch with your friends who are no longer in the city or country for that

manner.

Its up to the user to make it positive Good if used efficiently Good as long as it doesn’t affect others privacy Total waste of time. It’s good as long as everything is under control.......!!!!! We must use our discretion to keep ourselves safe in public forum like social networking sites. It

all depends on our self-control.

Teens who use Facebook more often show more narcissistic tendencies.

Young adults who have a strong Facebook presence show more signs of other psychological disorders, including antisocial behaviours, mania and aggressive tendencies.

Daily overuse of media and technology has a negative effect on the health of all children, preteens and teenagers by making them more prone to anxiety, depression, and other psychological disorders

Facebook can be distracting and can negatively impact learning.

Studies found that middle school, high school and college students who checked Facebook at least once during a 15-minute in study period achieved lower grades.

Young adults who spend more time on Facebook are better at showing "virtual empathy" to their online friends.

Social networking can provide tools for teaching in compelling ways that engage young students.

When you accept friend request from strangers, you put yourself at severe risk.

The men at other side start exchanging words very cordially and within some days you have a faith on them.

Then they start the mind game and start gathering more personal information. If they get to know your email address, they could go to email account and click on “forget password”. And the system will ask a security question like “your favourite teacher, your first phone number etc”. Unknowingly, you have already shared this information with them. So now they have access to your email account. This task will be much easier if you set your date of birth, school or college name as email password. by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant

Social networking users face severe health risk because they reduce face-to-face contact and become addicted in a virtual world of relationships.

In India people check their Facebook profile before getting out of bed in the morning and 35% check their accounts several times in a day.

SNS have played a significant role in making people become more isolated. Lack of face-to-face contact could alter the way genes work, upset immune responses, hormonal levels, function of arteries and influence mental performance.

This could increase the risk of health problems like cancer, strokes, heart disease and dementia.

1. You start losing sleep over SNS and that hampers your daily activity.

2. Spend more than an hour on SNS.

3. You become obsessed with your old loves and start visiting their profile. And gradually it starts to affect your current relationship status.

4. You tend to ignore work and use SNS in office/Collage hours.

5. When you think of going a day without SNS, it causes stress and anxiety to you.

& SOCIAL NETWOKING SITES

by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant Mahavidyalaya, Wardha MS 24

Page 25: Social networking & effects

The beginning of social networking sites started to make contacts with people and build a network of healthy relationship in the society.

But now it seems offering cybercriminals a great advantage to target victims.

Rajesh and his family (Pune) were out of home for treatment of his son in Hydrabad. Instead of making phone calls to everyone, he was updating on Facebook message about son’s health. Someone read his Facebook message and burgled their home during this time.

Paedophiles are using social networking sites because that is where they can lure the victim willingly. Teens easily believe in Love with the person they met online but actually they are falling to a trap of sexual predator.

“Right to Privacy” is an implied right under Fundamental Rights. The Constitution of India does not expressly recognize the right to privacy but at the same time this right has been spelt out by our Supreme Court from the provision of Article 21 which deals with the right to life and liberty.

Privacy is closely related to Data Protection. An individual’s details like name, address, interests,

family, etc. are often available on various web sites. Passing on such information to interested parties can lead to invasion of privacy.

In India, data protection is governed by The Information Technology Act.

The Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008 contains provisions which recognize privacy protection and few which encroach upon the privacy rights. The sections that recognize the privacy issues are Section 43A and Section 72A. However, Section 69 and Section 69B encroach upon the right to privacy by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant

Mahavidyalaya, Wardha MS 27

Page 28: Social networking & effects

These sections are condensed as follows. Section 43A provides scope for introducing the definition of “Sensitive Personal Data or Information” (subject to notification), and also imposes a responsibility for “Reasonable Security Practice” to be followed by the data handlers.

This section provides remedy to the person, and there is no upper limit for the compensation to be claimed.

by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant Mahavidyalaya, Wardha MS 28

Page 29: Social networking & effects

Another provision, Section 72A says that a person including an intermediary could be held liable if he discloses “personal information” which he accessed while providing services under a contract.

Cyber criminals may target a specific person or just any random individual. For example, on Facebook, by turning on the “public search” option, one makes his/her Facebook profile accessible to anyone who types the name in any of the search engines, which may be intentional or accidental.

The said person is liable for imprisonment for 3 years and fine upto 5 lakhs Rs.

The Delhi High Court in an on-going battle against Social networking websites and other similar web forums has ruled that unhealthy content on such websites is required to be removed, failure of which would lead to a total ban of the same.

The Indian government also sanctioned the court’s stance after reviewing all the evidence and being satisfied that they can be proceeded against as per section 153-A (promoting enmity between classes), 153-B(in place of worship) and 295-A(Maliciously insulting the religion or the religious belief of any class) of the Indian Penal Code

The IT Amendment Act 2008 brings about various sweeping changes in the existing Cyberlaw. The Provisions dealing with offensive or objectionable contents are

Section 66A (posting of offending content) (3 Yrs.& Fine ),

Section 66E (posting on the networking site the image of a private area of any person), (3 Yrs.,/Fine 2 lakh or both)

Section 67 (transmission of obscene material in electronic form), (3 Yr and fine upto 5 Lakh) (5 Yr & upto 10 Lakh)

Section 67A (grossly obscene i.e. containing sexually explicit act[ii]),

by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant Mahavidyalaya, Wardha MS 31

Page 32: Social networking & effects

Section 67B (Child pornographic content). (5 Yr. & 10L) – (10 Yr. & 10L)

Further, Section 69 gives power to the Central Government for interception or monitoring or decryption of any information through any computer resource,(7 yrs)

Section 69A provides for power of the central government or any of its officers to direct the blocking of any content on the website.(7 Yrs)

Section 292 of the IPC comprehensively sets out the circumstances in which ‘obscenity’ and / or any ‘obscene’ material is an offence.

Whether to use social networking site or not is an individual decision to many. But you must be aware of certain things when discussing your private life in public.

These are some of the tips that can make you and your family safe on the networking sites.

by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant Mahavidyalaya, Wardha MS 35

Page 36: Social networking & effects

1. Change the profile privacy now. Keep your information accessible only to people in your friend list.

2. Don’t accept friendship request from strangers. Many often we judge a particular person online, by his/her profile picture and personal information. This is the first mistake that cyber criminals wanted us to do.

3. Don’t post very personal information on the profile. It includes your email id, date of birth, contact number, home address and information about your family members.

4. Be cautious while posting your photo. Ensure your photo background doesn’t show about your actual whereabouts.

by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant Mahavidyalaya, Wardha MS 36

Page 37: Social networking & effects

5. Don’t post your current location when on a tour. Posting this information on social networking site is just like inviting criminals.

6. Don’t post negative things about your life. This is just like maligning your own image. Your friends are monitoring your activity and one such mistake can cause havoc in future.

7. Make distance from your ex’s profile. This might seem you little cruel, but once you decide to quit a relationship there is no meaning again visiting your ex-partner’s profile. If you want to have a good life in future, then unfriend your ex from friend list.

8. Don’t substitute real friends with virtual friends. Facebook is a great tool to connect new people across world. But they can never be your real friends. You need real friends to enhance your social image and reduce stress and anxiety.

9. Avoid using Social networking sites in work hours. When you try to use social networking sites during work hour, it not only affects your work performance but also increases chances of getting fired.

Lately I have been reflecting on the fact that we all as a society sometimes depend upon technology a little too much. Technology has made our lives so much easier and more simple, but I fear that it has also paralyzed

the way our generation thinks and behaves.by Harish Chandak, Faculty at Yeshwant
