Description:
Social Reading is another good practice seen in Belgium. Is a good practice to learn and adquire skills related with reading and writing. What they do is set up activities related, directly linked, with daily activities such us coocking, do the shopping... and then they do reading and writing prints. So it means they learn reading and writing skills thanks daily activities. Since we liked this practice we set up in one of our classrooms a Coocking Workshop to work reading and writing skills.

They set up reading and writing activities related with their social and civic participation and inclusion, which is to say related with daily live activities such us: shopping, using transport public, go for a walk... Pupils can actively participate in the life of their school and the wider community and are encouraged to make choices in meaningful contexts in their daily lives. Makes written communication more clear to their pupils. After the activity seen in Brussels, we introduced a new reading and writing activity to work with our students based on a cooking workshop. Furthermore each learner use and enhance their AAC system (Augmentative and Alternative Communication).

In this workshop, first of all the students say different suggestions to decide which will be the recipe to be done.

Students have to look for different recipes and the complexity of its elaboration in various websites. Starting from here they decide which will be the recipe that will make.

When they have chosen it, we watch the video again to write down the ingredients, the stuff needed to coock it and how to coock it.

Then, they decide the shopping list and go for it.

And finally, they make the recipe in the classroom to eat it and to share with their classmates and teachers. Even some special days we set up a little market to sell or share the dishes.
