SOCIETY FOR THE PROMOTION OF ROMAN STUDIES

REPORT OF THE COUNCIL FOR 1968

The Council has the honour to present to the members of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies its report for I968.

i. Finance.-The Council wishes to thank the following for grants received during I968: the British Academy (2z50), the Craven Committee of Oxford University (?2oo) and the H. A. Thomas Fund of Cambridge University (L2oo). It is very conscious of this recognition of the value of the work done by the Society.

Members will notice that the attached balance sheet has been rearranged to show the market value of each investment instead of the group figure shown in previous years. This has been done to give a clearer picture of the Society's investment income, which amounted this year to ?1,587. Subscriptions--3,549 (U3,3Io in I967) and sales of the Journal-/3,139 (k2,7i5 in I967) continue to rise. There has unfortunately been a corresponding unavoidable increase in printing costs- k4,345 U3,931 in I967) and in general administration expenses-,I,3I9 (Ui,z82 in I967). A new source of income is that from the share of sales of reprints of the Journal by Kraus Reprints, Limited-k2,o77.

2. Membership.-The membership of the Society continues to increase. Below is a table which shows the changes in I968:

Members Libraries ___ _ - IStudents Total

3. Deaths.-During I968 the Council learned with regret of the death of Professor Sir Frank Adcock, O.B.E., D.Litt., Litt.D., President of the Society from 1929-193i and former Vice- President. Vol. LVI of the Journal was dedicated to Sir Frank Adcock. Council also learned with regret of the deaths of Professor Andre Piganiol of Paris, Honorary Member of the Society since I962, Dr. G. Lissant Cox, Dr. G. P. Gooch, O.M., Professor R. G. Goodchild, F.S.A., Mr. H. C. Irvine, Mr. P. E. Nash, Mr. R. Williams.

4. Joint Library.-The Librarian reports as follows: 'The following figures show the use of the borrowing service by members during the last

three years:

I966 I967 I968 Books borrowed . . . . 5,I32 5,324 4,924 Borrowers . . . . . 72I 752 752 Book parcels sent by post . 336 372 294 Xerox copies made by library staff . 225 I,302 2,J96

It will be seen that the Library service which has expanded the most rapidly in recent years is the provision of xerox copies, mostly of articles in periodicals. The increase in xerox copies accounts for the drop in the number of books borrowed and in the number of parcels sent by post.

REPORT OF THE COUNCIL FOR THE YEAR I968 33I

998 books and pamphlets were added to the Library during the year-666 by the Joint Library and 332 by the Institute. Of the 666 added by the Joint Library, 140 were purchased, 367 sent for review in the Journals and the remaining 159 presented or obtained by exchange.

354 periodicals are currently taken, 262 by the Joint Library (including I89 by exchange) and 92 by the Institute (including 57 by exchange).

295 books were bound during the year (21O by the Joint Library and 85 by the Institute) and 195 periodicals (i66 by the Joint Library and 29 by the Institute). The subvention of ?ioo which the Institute now gives annually to the Joint Library for binding periodicals has made it possible to keep more or less up to date, in spite of increased costs.

9I of the most overcrowded pages of the Author Catalogue have now been xeroxed and the entries re-set on new sheets. The addition of the extra sheets needed made the original volumes uncomfortably large and heavy. Each volume has therefore been divided into two, and the catalogue now consists of 14 much more conveniently sized volumes.

Thanks are due to the following, for gifts to the Library: Dr. A. R. Birley, Mr. G. A. Bozonis, Dr. K. Branigan, Prof. T. R. S. Broughton, Mr. A. R. Burn, Mr. J. M. Carter, Mr. A. Cholmondeley, Mr. R. S. Dill, Lady Pierson Dixon, Prof. R. Egger, Dr. V. L. Ehrenberg, Dr. J. Fitz, Lady (Aileen) Fox, Dr. D. H. French, Prof. F. R. D. Goodyear, Dr. M. Grant, Prof. E. W. 5. Slides Collection.-The Keeper of Slides reports as follows: ' During the year the slides collection was used extensively, especially by members hiring slides,

but there was a decline in the sale of slides. A large order for slides for Haifa University was received in November, but could not be completed in time for inclusion in the year's business.

The number of slides borrowed was 6,022, I,763 more than in I967 (4,259). The number of slides sold was 459, I83 less than in I967 (642). The number of coloured slides in the collection has been increased by I49, and there are now i,259 Greek slides and I,970 Roman slides. All the coloured slides in the collection have now been duplicated.

A film-strip of Dr. G. Webster's set on the " Roman Army in Britain " has been made, and of Mrs. S. Beare's " Classical Costume " and of Professor J. M. C. Toynbee's " Art in Roman Britain ". These may be cut up and mounted for showing in a slide projector if preferred. All are in colour, or partly coloured.

Mr. R. A. Carson's set on " Roman Coins " has been completed. Professor D. E. Strong has promised a set in colour on " Greek Painting ", and a set on " Fishbourne " is to be compiled by Professor Barry Cunliffe.

A new catalogue of coloured slides was compiled and is on sale at 8s. 6d.'

6. Publications.-Volume LVIII of the Journal appeared in December. 2,800 copies were printed, 200 more than of the previous volume. The offprint of the year's excavations in Roman Britain continues to sell steadily.

As a result of Council's decision, which the Annual General Meeting will be asked to approve, to issue in I970 and following years a second journal concentrating on Romano-British studies, it has been necessary to reconstruct the editorial organisation. Mr. F. A. Lepper has been appointed Chairman of the Editorial Committee, Mr. M. WV. Frederiksen Editor of the Journal of Roman Studies and Professor S. S. Frere Editor of the proposed new journal. At the same time the Editorial Com- mittee has been strengthened by the addition of four new members who are experts in the field of Romano-British studies, Professor B. Cunliffe, Mr. B. R. Hartley, Mr. A. L. F. Rivet and Dr. G. Webster.

The Council on behalf of the Society congratulates Mr. Lepper on the success achieved by the Journal under his Editorship and thanks him for his devoted and untiring work.

7. Joint Greek and Roman Committee Conference, Oxford, I968.-The Ninth Congress organised by the Joint Committee of Greek and Roman Societies was held in Oxford from 4th to ioth September, 1968. The next Meeting will be held in Cambridge in I97I from 26th to 3ISt July.
