The Ascension of Our Lord God
and Savior Jesus Christ
During the 40 days after His
Resurrection, Christ appeared to his
disciples confirming them in faith. He
then ascended into Heaven and is seated
at the right hand of the Father (Luke 24;
50-52, Mark 6; 19). The apostles' joy
lies in the fact that in his Ascension
Christ does not abandon the world. "And
remember, I am always with you to the
end of the age." (Matthew 28; 20) Christ
invisibly abides in the world, in which
humanity is called to attain salvation. The apostles receive
from Christ the blessing and commission to preach the
Gospel to all creation and to make disciples of all the
nations, baptizing and teaching them to observe all that
Christ commanded them (Matthew 16; 15, 28; 9-20).
In his Ascension, Christ renewed human nature its
divine glory. The liturgical stichera/verses of the Ascension
feast sings of the open 'doors to heaven' and how Christ
'enters into heaven', where he is greeted by angelic powers
in fear and trepidation. He is lifted up 'upon the clouds',
above the cherubim and 'higher' than heaven. As God, to
him belongs 'a place' at the right of the Father. In God's
plan the Ascension is the condition for the descent of the
Holy Spirit;"It is to your advantage that I go away, for if
I do not go away, the Advocate/Holy Spirit will not come
to you"(John 16; 7). Christ ascends to the Father "for us
men and our salvation". (Symbol of Faith) "In my Father's
house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so,
would I have told you that I go prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again
and take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may
be also." (Jon 14; 2-3) Just as Christ ascended into glory so
in glory he will return again. (Christ our Pascha-Catechism
of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. #296-297)

П р а з н и к Г о с п о д н ь о г о

The Meaning of Holy Communion
The presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist is different
from any other. Christ is some way mysteriously present in
everyone (Mt 25; 40). He is present another way when two
or three are gathered together in His Name (Mt 18; 20). In
still another way, He is present in the Church as it preaches,
governs, and sanctifies (Mt 28: 20). Christ prays with us
and in us during the Divine Liturgy, it is Christ who offers
and is offered, who receives and is given as food to the
faithful. In all such instances we encounter Christ in His
action and power. Only in the Eucharist do we receive the
Body and Blood of the Risen glorified Christ who ascended
into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father, as
both Catholics and Orthodox believe.
In the Holy Eucharist Christ is truly present under the
forms of bread and wine. Like the Holy Trinity, the Holy
Eucharist is a tremendous mystery of faith. We accept it
because the Last Supper Jesus said; “This is my Body, This
is my Blood”, meaning Jesus Himself changes bread and
wine into His Body and Blood, and commanded His
Apostles to;”Do this in memory of me.” In the Living
Bread discourse in John 6; 32 ff, Jesus boldly refers to
Himself as “the living bread that came down from heaven.
Anyone who eats this bread shall live forever: and the bread
that I shall give is my flesh for the life of the world…I tell
you most solemnly if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of
man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you…For
my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. He who
eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I in
him.” The people understood Christ’s words literally and
were horrified. Many of His disciples left him but Jesus did
not retract, nor did he call them back to say they
misunderstood him: No, he knew that they interpreted his
words literally and rightly.
The Holy Eucharist is Jesus’ greatest gift to us, His
living presence in our souls to change us into Him.
“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me
and I in him.” (Jn 6; 56) “By partaking of the Body and
Blood of Christ, we become one body and blood with
Christ, we become Christ-bearers. In his way according to
blessed Peter, we “share in the divine nature.” (St. Cyril of
Jerusalem) “Nor do you change me into yourself as you do
food for your flesh, but you shall be changed into me…
” (St. Augustine) “It is the completion of the sacraments,
not simply one of them. Here all human striving reaches its
goal. For in this sacrament we attain God Himself, and God
Himself is made one with us in the most perfect of unions…
This is the final mystery. Beyond this, it is impossible to
go, nor can anything be added to it.” (14th Orthodox
Byzantine theologian Nicholas Cabasilas: “On the Divine
Liturgy.”)
