Tested quality
BET Test CentreAt our in-house BET Test Centre,we can simulate the loads our pro-ducts must withstand over theyears. For all the OBO cable sup-port systems, we determine themaximum load capacity according
to support spacings and specificparameters. In the salt spray test, all the system components mustshow sufficient resistance to corro-sion, in accordance with the KTSstandard DIN EN 61537. In addi-tion, lightning protection experts inthe BET Test Centre perform stan-
dardised tests on OBO lightningand surge protection components, lightning protection structures andsurge voltage protection units. Awide range of different testing me-thods guarantees the high level ofsafety of OBO products.

Proper corrosion protection
Corrosion categoriesCorrosion can lead to high loss le-vels or even the failure of technicalsystems. For this reason, the pre-vention or reduction of corrosion isan important part of the protectivemeasures on steel components. The corrosion categories are defi-ned exactly in DIN EN ISO 12944-2. The standard assigns the am-
bient atmospheric conditions to atotal of six different categories. Thefollowing parameters determinethe strength of the corrosion andthe speed at which it is occurring:• The relative humidity• The risk of dew formation• The concentration of impurities
promoting corrosion

Special requirementsThe lifespan of a cable routing sys-tem is dependent upon the envi-ronment in which it is located. Thehighest levels of material qualityand corrosion protection are al-ways required when cable supportsystems are installed outdoors. Inparticular, deployment in aggressi-ve atmospheres, such as those in
the chemicals or petrochemical in-dustries, is a particular challenge. The systems are also subjected topermanent loads under extremeweather conditions, or when closeto the sea. It is therefore extremelyimportant to know the environmen-tal influences when selecting theright material and the necessarysurface treatment.

Explosion protection and ATEX directives
Every year, explosions endangerpeople and systems around theworld. Any company manufactu-ring, processing or storing com-bustible substances must expectpossible explosions. Levels of inju-ry and damage to people and pro-perty running into the millions of
euros will occur, because compa-nies stinted on safety mechanisms.Combustible and explosive sub-stances can occur in the form ofgases, vapours, mists or dusts. Inparticular, in the petrochemical in-dustry and the conveyance of cru-de oil and natural gas, explosions
can cause major damage to peo-ple and equipment. Explosion pro-tection will prevent damage totechnical products, systems andother equipment.
The three basic principles of explosion protection• Avoid potentially explosive atmospheres• Avoid any possibly effective source of ignition• Limit possible explosion impacts to a reasonable level through struc-
tural measures
Three factors must exist for an explosion to occur
Ignition protection types• Encapsulation• Intrinsic safety• Increased safety

Tricky: Systems in potentially ex-plosive areasSpecial precautions are necessarywhen setting up systems in areaswith the risk of a potential explosi-on. Special requirements also app-ly to cables. The operator dividesup areas, in which potentially ex-plosive atmospheres may occur, into zones. They ensure that theminimum requirements are app-lied. They must also indicate ac-cess points to potentially explosiveareas.
Atmosphères Explosibles:ATEX/EXThe term ATEX is derived from theFrench words ATmosphèresEXplosibles. The EU ATEX directi-ves regulate the requirements re-sulting from the use of devicesand protection systems in potenti-ally explosive areas. Due to increa-sing international economic inter-meshing, major progress has beenachieved in the standardisation ofthe explosion protection regulati-ons. In the European Union, thepreconditions for complete stan-dardisation were created in the di-rectives 94/9/EC for manufactur-ers and 99/92/EC for operators.
Manufacturer directive 94/9/EC(ATEX 95)The directive regulates the require-ments for the structure of explosi-on-protected devices and protecti-on systems, by prescribing basichealth and safety requirements.
Manufacturers of components forpotentially explosive areas mustobtain an approval for their pro-ducts. The quality requirements forthe production of resources wi-thout effective sources of ignitionis extremely high. An approvedtest office will only certify the func-tion of the components of a manu-facturer after a comprehensivetest, and will assign them into ca-tegories according to failure safe-ty.

Function maintenancesystems
Valuable time can be won for sa-fety-relevant electrical systemsPetrochemical and chemical plantsplace the highest requirements onthe quality and reliability of the in-stalled systems. This is particularlyimportant in the case of a fire. Thefunction maintenance of electricalsystems is one of the central mea-sures required by building laws forthe protection of people, buildingsand systems. Function mainte-nance is considered as the conti-nuation of current flow for a defi-ned period of time during a fire. This won time could save lives, asemergency and escape routes canbe used for longer.
Function maintenance systemsOBO systems for cable systemswith E30 to E90 function mainte-nance are tested according to allthe key national and internationalstandards. They open up a uniquerange of cable routing options andensure that safety-relevant systemscontinue to function reliably over adefined period of time in the caseof fire. This allows emergency ligh-ting, fire alarm systems or smokeextraction systems to remain acti-ve. The longer these safety-rele-vant systems work, the greater thechances of rescue and fire-fightingare.

Insulation systems
Maintaining fire sectionsThe limitation of the fire to specificstructural sections means that theremaining parts of the building areprotected for a defined period of ti-me. This offers valuable extra timefor the evacuation of people andthe initiation of extinguishing mea-sures. OBO insulation maintainsthe fire sections, thus preventing arapid spread of fire and smoke.
Tested according to• DIN 4102
VarietyThe insulation is designed for diffe-rent wall types and the cables orpipes routed therein. In structures, cable systems are arranged insuch a way that fire sections withmanageable dimensions are crea-ted. For this, cable bandages areideal for surrounding cables. Theyprotect the environment against acable fire, as the coating foams upif there is a short-circuit, suffoca-ting the fire. If there is a fire on theoutside, the bandages ensure thatthe cables are kept apart from thefire.

Escape route installation systems
Maintaining emergency and esca-pe routesWhen a fire breaks out, every mi-nute is crucial. If there is a fire, emergency and escape routes arethe central lifelines of a building. The longer people can use them, the greater the chances that theywill escape the fire and dangeroussmoke. It is therefore mandatory tohave at least one structural emer-gency and escape route in anybuilding, and, in industrial buil-dings, more may even be required.OBO can offer two installation so-lutions for the protection of emer-gency and escape routes.
False ceiling systemsTested false ceiling systems aresuitable for use beneath suspen-ded fire protection ceilings. Even ifthere is a fire in the cables instal-led there, the emergency and es-cape route can still be used.

Air termination and down conductor systems
Air-termination systemsDirect and indirect impacts of light-ning strikes and other transientsurge voltages can endanger che-mical and petrochemical plants.According to the ATEX directives, the operators are responsible forthe safety of their plant. They mustcarry out the zone assignment andevaluate explosion risks. OBO canoffer the right air-termination andarrestor system for every applicati-on.
Tested safetyThe lightning protection com-ponents fulfil IEC 62305 (VDE0185-305) and have been testedaccording to the international andEuropean standards IEC 62561(VDE 0185-561). They adopt im-portant protective functions in po-tentially explosive areas of petro-chemical plants, tank warehousesor power stations. Chimneys, an-tenna masts, ventilation pipes, tanks and similar parts of the sys-tem can be protected using sepa-rated and isolated interceptionrods.

Down conductor systemsFrom the air-termination systems, insulated arrestors carry the light-ning current safely and withoutsparks on or in parts of the plant, from the impact point to the ear-thing systems. This means thatpeople and plants are equally wellprotected against the risks of light-ning current as against spark for-mation and the resulting fires. Theair termination and down conduc-tor systems must be planned onthe basis of the explosion protecti-on zone division. Lighting currentsare arrested without ignitionsparks along the insulated arrestorOBO isCon®. Through the proper-ties proven through these tests, the isCon® arrestor can be used inpotentially explosive areas.

Earthing systems
Earthing systems in industrialplantsIn industrial plants, the connectionof all the available earthing sys-tems forms the basis for fault-freeoperation. A densely meshed, glo-bal earthing network reduces thepotential differences to a minimum. The mesh width may vary, depen-ding on the structural system.
Transfer of the lightning currentinto the earthEarthing systems carry the inter-cepted and arrested lightning cur-rent into the earth. In addition, theymust avoid potential differencessafely. The entire earthing systemincludes the protective earth toprotect people and property, light-ning protection earthing to transferthe lightning current into the earthand functional earthing of the elec-trical system components.
Mesh widthsA mesh width of 20 x 20 metres isrecommended for technical andeconomical reasons. Above-ground pipe bridges outside pro-duction facilities must be connec-ted to an earthing system every 30metres. OBO has the right, stan-dard-conformant, continuously resi-stant earthing system for each ap-plication, both for lightning protec-tion earthing according to IEC62305 (VDE 0185-305) and for afoundation earthing system accor-ding to DIN 18014.

face earthing• Systems for all applications, from lightning protection to equipotential

Equipotential bonding systems and spark gaps
Secure protection against voltagedifferencesEquipotential bonding systems en-sure safe distribution of the light-ning energy. However, in the caseof other voltage differences, theycan protect people and electricalsystems and devices in a buildingagainst an electric shock. In thecase of a lightning strike, about 50per cent of the lightning energy isarrested into the earthing system. The remaining 50 per cent is distri-buted on the equipotential bondingsystem (internal lightning protec-tion). In particular, the sections ofthe electrical energy distributorand data technology systems mustbe specially protected.
Statutory requirementsAn equipotential bonding systemmust be set up in every building, inaccordance with IEC 60364 (VDE0100-534) and IEC 62305 (VDE0185-305). This is also mandatoryin the case of each new installati-on or modification. With the testedOBO products, meshed state-of-the-art equipotential bonding canbe created through the integrationof the metallic building com-ponents, such as reinforcementrods or metal facades. Thus, opti-mum protection against potentialdifferences and inductive coup-lings can be created.
Equipotential bonding in potenti-ally explosive areasIn areas with a potentially explosi-ve atmosphere, insulated, encap-sulated spark gaps with the appro-val for use in potentially explosiveareas must be used for equipoten-tial bonding. The OBO Parex sparkgap insulates the parts of the sys-tem against corrosion currents, ful-filling the requirements for theconnection of lightning currents inpotentially explosive areas.

Effective protection:Surge protection systems for power equipment
Quick to react and effectiveVoltage surges are caused by di-rect and indirect lightning strikes, and by switching operations withinpower networks. That is why surgeprotection guards not only againstlightning, but also against otherpower line interference. Surge pro-tection devices ensure that powerlines under voltage are properlyequipotentially bonded. They reactbefore the insulation in electricaland electronic devices can be de-stroyed by surge voltages.
Tested safetyAll of OBO’s surge protectionequipment is tested in compliancewith the standards in our own BETTest Centre, and comes with a fi-ve-year guarantee. A whole seriesof national and international testmarks testify to the quality of ourproducts.

Surge protection systems for telecommunications and data technology
Securing the flow of dataA particularly sensitive area in che-mical and petrochemical plants isthat of data and communicationtechnology. It too is strongly at riskfrom the impacts of lightningstrikes and from surge voltages.Companies require the rapid, relia-ble transmission of data.
Risk potentialRisk potentials in complex buil-dings can be found in their largesurface area, their location andopen structure, as well as in theuse of modern measurement andcontrol technology (MSR).
Optimum protectionOBO surge protection systems of-fer optimum protection of the tele-communications and data cables. They react before the insulation inelectrical and electronic devices isdestroyed by surge voltages.
