Legend has it that when King Alfred(871-901) expelled the Danes from theCity of London he permitted those withEnglish wives to settle just outside theCity walls. This settlement wasassociated with the building of theChurch known ever since as St ClementDanes.

The mediaeval Church erected in the14th century escaped the Great Fire ofLondon (1666), but it was so dilapidatedit was rebuilt in 1681 by Sir ChristopherWren. In May 1941 the Church wasreduced to ruins by fire bombs, but afterthe war substantial funds raised by theCommonwealth and allied Air Forces andCivilian benefactors enabled the Churchto be restored to its former glory, largelyas a memorial to all who died whileserving in the Air Force. It wasreconsecrated in the presence of HerMajesty the Queen in October 1958 asThe Central Church of the Royal AirForce.

As the famous "Oranges and Lemons'',Church, whose bells play this traditionaltune at three hourly intervals during the

day, the bells also ring out across Londonas a reminder and call the many specialServices and Commemorations. TheChurch is well known for the higheststandard of its musical tradition, whichhas been maintained since the reopeningin 1958 by the same Director of Music,Martindale Sidwell, with a small choir ofeight professional singers.

The "Oranges and Lemons'' chime can beheard on the CD Carillon Bells of GreatBritain Saydisc CD-SDL 429 andchange ringing on the St Clement’s pealof bells is on the CD Church Bells ofEngland Saydisc CD-SDL 378 where anexcerpt (‘touch’) of the change-ringingmethod London Surprise Royal can beheard.

O beata Virgo, cujus viscera merueruntportare Dominum

Jesum Christum. Alleluia
