Sophie the Baker Loves Math!

Sophie likes school but not math. Math was hard.

Today they learned whole, halves and quarters.

The teacher gave homework that day. “I don’t like math,” said Sophie.  

“I don’t like halves or quarters.” said Sophie. Then Sophie’s mom had an idea!

“Would you like to help me bake cookies?” asked Sophie’s mom.

After school Sophie went home with a sad face. “Why are you sad?” asked Sophie’s mom.  

“Yes I do!” said Sophie. They baked 12 cookies.

Sophie’s mom cut one cookie into smaller pieces.

“Look at the whole cookie cut into two pieces. They are called halves.” said Sophie’s mom. “See how two halves make one whole.”

“Oh yes!” yelled Sophie.  

“Can you find the picture that is not in halves?” Sophie’s mom asked. “Hmmm… yes the malasada!” Sophie yelled.

“Now look at the whole cookie cut into four pieces.

They are called quarters.” said Sophie’s mom.

“See how four quarters make one whole cookie.”

“Can you find the picture that is not quarters?” Sophie’s mom asked. “Yes it’s the taro cake!” Sophie yelled.

“I have fun with math at home! My mom helped me. Now I like math and baking!” said Sophie.
