E ASTER   AT NEWTON GROVE

Easter was a wonderful day at Newton Grove.  Thanks to your support, we were able to take 498Easter Baskets and 4755 plastic eggs to the children.

The eggs covered the soccer field. When the EasterBunny said, “GO,” they were all picked up quickly.

A call had been received from a Pentecostal Church,

north of Newton Grove. The recent tornados had left5 families with nothing. Items donated to theFarmworker Ministry and Easter baskets for thechildren were delivered.

Thanks to the caring people, all this was possible.

  THE R ECTOR ’S R  AMBLINGS

As we move into June we come to the Feast of Pentecost, which falls on the 12th this year. Pentecost

used to be called Whitsunday for the white vestmentsand hangings traditionally used on the feast day. Butnow we follow a variant tradition and use the color red;red for the Pentecostal fire, red for the martyrs, red forordination.

Before the first Pentecost, in the space after Easter thedisciples seem unfocussed, even a little lost, as they deal with the

appearances of the risen Christ. But after Pentecost they have a directionand a purpose. It is no wonder that this day is often called the Church’sbirthday, and occasionally celebrated with a cake and candles.

But how do we embody Pentecost? Think of the three meanings of Pentecost’s red. The first is the red of the Pentecostal fire. While we arenot likely to see the flames descending or “speak in other tongues” as theapostles did, look at what the effect of that experience was for them.

They all began to move ahead in ministry of one form or another:preaching, teaching, and serving. Look around for where the fire is inthe church now. There is a new energy around outreach as well as study. If you don’t feel the warmth of those flames, then look within. What fireis burning, perhaps unnoticed in your own heart?

Next is the red of the martyrs. The word is usually applied to those whohave died for their faith, hence the red for their blood. But the original

meaning of the Greek word martus is a witness, whether a witness in acourt of law, or a witness for the faith. We do not necessarily have totestify with our words, but what can we do, even in little things, to actout our faith in day to day life?

Finally, there is red for ordination. The Outline of the Faith in thePrayer book lists four orders of ministry: lay persons, bishops, priests, and deacons (BCP 855). Baptism is the primary ordination we all share.

It is an ordination to service and love to God and to one another. It is anordination we all need to claim. Feel the Pentecostal fire stand up as a

witness to God’s love at work in our lives, and, this Pentecost, go forth asa minister.

  TIME, T ALENTS, AND TREASURE

""Come and See." The harvest of your time, talents, and treasure will be recognized here each month.

Welcome back Newland Crocker, Mary Evans, DavidLawrynowicz, Karen Hull, Susan Herrmann, Bill Heckman and

Father Mark! Our parishioners seen above (except for Bill andMark) have returned from a week long mission trip to Puerto Platain the Dominican Republic with their home base there at ChristoRey (Christ the King) Episcopal Church and Preschool.

Our missionaries were responsible for their own travel expenses as were nine other Episcopalians from nearby churches who were ableto join this trip. They carried with them clothes donated by ourparishioners for the children in the preschool and prayers from allat St. Andrew's.

The trip was enhanced by the support of the Mission Commit-tee. Its members ( Margaret Baggett, Ashleigh & NewlandCrocker, Susan Forshaw, Frances Goodman, Marie & StuartHardy, Bill Heckman, Susan Herrmann, David Lawrynowicz,

Missy Ritchie, Jim Spruill ) sponsored the "Chili Cookoff" with allproceeds going for supplies for Christo Rey.

Muchas gracias to our missionaries, to the Mission Committeeand to all in our parish. And Gracias a Dios.

 PRESCHOOL NEWS

I cannot believe that we have just completed our ninth year of preschool at St. Andrew's! Where has the time gone? It seems like

yesterday that we were planning for our first day of school. It isamazing to see how much the children have grown and what they have learned. Graduation of the 4 year old class means that they

will be moving on and we will begin preparing the next set of "Shooting Stars". I will miss the families that we have served and

wish them the best in the coming year. Have a happy summer.

Much love,Catharine Hedrick
