Pat Hayes Parks passed away November 24, 2008 Pat was employed by the Park District for more than 21 years She is best remembered for coordinating the Music in the Park summer concert series and the Imagination Station performance series She also organized the annual community holiday concerts by the United States Air Force Band of Mid-America

To honor and memorialize Pat’s passion for, and immeasurable contributions to the programs at the Sinnissippi Music Shell, her family chose to establish a permanent fund to provide ongoing financial support for programs at the Music Shell When considering the options of how to spend memorial gifts given following Pat’s passing, her family felt that Pat would have wanted these funds to be used for the greatest long-term impact on the Music Shell and its programs

If you appreciate the wonderful and unique entertainment experience provided at the Sinnissippi Music Shell and the many years Pat devoted to it, please consider making a contribution to the Pat Hayes Parks Memorial fund You may simply mail a contribution to the Rockford Park District Foundation at 401 S. Main St., Rockford, IL, 61101.

Thank you on behalf of Pat’s family and the staff of the Rockford Park District.

Rockford’s Sinnissippi Park, at 1401 N Second Street, was one of the Rockford Park District’s first parks, acquired shortly after the District was formed in 1909 An 80-acre tract was purchased for $47,500, to prevent the land from being subdivided by real estate speculators

Formerly known as Rood’s Woods, the park was renamed Sinnissippi, meaning “clear flowing river ” When it opened in 1912, the park also contained Rockford’s first golf course It now includes 123 04 acres and is one of the community’s most popular parks, with its playground, cookout shelters, nine-hole golf course, music shell, lagoon, gardens, and recreation path Special events such as Music in the Park, Holiday Festival of Lights, and the Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition bring many thousands to visit the park each year

Phantom Regiment, June 12

Tuesday, June 12Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps2008 World Champions – In 2012, the Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps’ field production is entitled “Turandot,” and is based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera of the same name They will also perform selections from past years Rain date: Wednesday, June 13

Thursday, June 14Dennis Stroughmatt & Creole StompDennis Stroughmatt & Creole Stomp have caught the attention of Creole/Zydeco music fans across the US and Canada, as well as those who enjoy bluegrass, blues, rock, country, swing, and Latin … all the while simply being who they are: a band that plays French Creole music to the core Come ready to dance!

Tuesday, June 19Big James & The Chicago PlayboysLed by “Big James” on trombone and lead vocals, the Playboys perform at many of the well known blues clubs in the Chicago area with a more polished but no less soulful sound that lends gospel elegance to its hardbooting groove Big James and the Playboys acquit themselves admirably on blues standards – with a Chicagoan blend of Texas-to-Memphis panache andback-alley aggression; but these are musicians who’ve clearly given their hearts and souls to the no-frills hard funk of the late 1960s

Miles Nielsen and the Rusted Hearts, July 12

Thursday, July 5Fresh Hot FrittersThis Rockford-based quartet will delight your ear-buds with rockabilly music But these cats take generous liberties with the term “rockabilly,” and break out stuff some folks might call western swing, jazz, or even country! Somehow, it all goes together well, seemingly melted together by the common themes of twangy guitars and thumpin’ upright bass fiddle Just like the culinary treat the band takes its name from, the Fritters’ music is always fresh, hot, and well, just a bit greasy!

Tuesday, July 10Play the Washington Post MarchPerformed by the Rockford Concert Band (see p. 22)Mark Rose, ConductorFeaturing Cornet Soloist Jim Martindale and Vocalist Jodi Beach

Thursday, July 12Miles Nielsen and the Rusted HeartsSomewhere between a bar and the recording studio, Miles Nielsen’s stirs up his own pop rock brand of Beatles-esque Cosmic Americana Pop rock arrangements and sunny melodies are tucked between a long lost country folk steel guitar floating through speakers around crashing drums, bouncing bass lines and smooth as butter keys Miles Nielsen continues to help carry out that very rare rock n’ roll torch that only few can claim out loud, “that sound? … it came from the Midwest ”

saTurday June 30TORONZO CANNON Growing up in the shadows of Chicago’s blues Mecca, Theresa’s Lounge, had a lasting effect on Toronzo Cannon As a kid, Toronzo would listen to the raw, soulful sounds of legends like Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, and Muddy Waters “It wasn’t just the music that got me, but the effect on the people I knew right then, that was what I was gonna do ” These experiences led him to pick up his first guitar as a teenager and begin to learn to sing and play the sounds he heard Inspired by the three Kings (Freddie, B.B., and Albert), a little Hendrix, and some 1970s R&B/soul, Toronzo soon developed his own sound “If I wasn’t gigging, I was hitting every jam session I could find I couldn’t get enough ” It was during this time that he developed his own powerful, gospel-flavored vocal style and electrifying stage presence

saTurday July 28CORKY SIEGEL’S CHAMBER BLUES Is it blues, is it classical? Walking the line between Beethoven and B B King, and armed with the creative genius and instrumental prowess that have defined his career for over four decades, Corky Siegel has pioneered an original, genre-busting chamber blues - a fresh, innovative sound capturing the sparkling qualities of classical music merged with the emotional melodic style of blues, all within an intimate chamber setting. Under Corky’s lead, The West End String Quartet and percus-sionist Frank Donaldson complete the Chamber Blues Band. Described by critics internationally as remarkable, astonishing, extraordinary, hot, mesmerizing, joyous, and outrageous fun, their music and concerts have delighted diverse audiences globally, and their genre-defying presentations are drawing new and old concert-goers to places they have never been before

HistoryIn 1986, retired military veteran Elbert Jordan was walking through Levings Park with then Rockford Park District Executive Director Webbs Norman discussing ways to improve the Park Elbert’s vision was that Levings Park would be a place to bring people together and to provide positive activities for young people during the summer

Having recently retired from Chrysler, Elbert had the time and drive to create something new, and his idea was to offer a talent showcase and series of concerts at the Park The Rockford Park District agreed to provide funding support, and the Levings Talent Showcase was born

Elbert coordinated this venue for 17 years, during which time countless young people were encouraged to exercise their talents and artistic interests by competing in the talent showcase and benefiting from the mentoring provided by Elbert and his associates

Harlan Jefferson became director of the Levings Talent Showcase (now called Live at Levings) in 2003 when Elbert Jordan retired Harlan has served as director since then, lining up a variety of talent to perform at Levings on several Sundays during the summer, and continuing to provide an opportunity for local aspiring artists to take their performance on stage and develop their skills

Says Harlan, “I love this program because I am a product of it As a young teen, I participated in it every summer My friends and I couldn’t wait for summer to come so we could hear free live music and compete in the talent show in front of a built-in audience who was starving for entertainment It wasn’t about winning or losing, it was about the experience ”

Harlan feels this program is important because it brings generations of families together It also provides cultural, educational, recreational, and leadership development experience through the arts He comes from a musical family, and his parents felt that the arts were just as important as athletics They enrolled him in music camps, took him to concerts, and hired private music teachers to help him appreciate and understand the art of music

Today, in addition to coordinating the newly titled Live at Levings, Harlan is an award winning soul jazz saxophonist and recording artist who performs original tunes and different styles of music for different audiences. It’s not unusual to hear him singing or performing Frank Sinatra, John Legend, Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley, Miles Davis, or BB King at an upscale Italian restaurant or a supper club

The Rockford Park District is pleased to support the efforts of Harlan Jefferson to continue providing this unique and dynamic program
