SCREENSHOTS FROM REPORT
Historically, Coffee has largely been consumed in developed
regions, such as North America and Europe. However, in
terms of future consumption, there is an ongoing shift
towards emerging countries, with consumers in these
countries steadily increasing their domestic consumption.
Global Coffee consumption reached approximately 164.8
million 60kg bags in the 2018/2019 period, and is forecast to
increase to a record value of 166.4 million 60kg bags, in the
2019/2020* period.
o Global Coffee consumption continues to grow at a steady rate of
approximately 2% annually. As per the graph below, over the past five
years, consumption has increased from 152.7 million 60kg bags in the
2015/2016 season, to an estimated 166.4 million bags in 2019/2020*.
In terms of actual Coffee consumption, the European Union
was the top Coffee consuming region during the 2018/2019
season, consuming a total of approximately 46.1 million 60kg
bags, as per the graph below. This constituted approximately
28% of world consumption during the 2018/2019 season.
o This was followed by the United States, consuming a total of 27.1 million
60kg bags, and Brazil, consuming a total of 23.2 million 60kg bags in the
2018/2019 season.

Sustainability in the Coffee Market
o The importance of sustainability for various industries continues to be a
popular topic, both globally, and in South Africa. This is particularly
applicable within the South African Coffee market, as consumers are
increasingly opting for environmentally friendly packaging and products,
that have been sustainably produced.
o In an effort to address this increasing interest in sustainability, numerous
industry players have adopted environmentally-friendly packaging options
such as sugar cane-based Coffee pods as well as creating awareness
and promoting recycling initiatives. Some of the industry examples
include:
o Compostable Coffee Pods: Everyday, millions of people use
unsustainable coffee pods, contributing to the world’s plastic problem. It is
estimate that 75-million homes, in the US alone, use coffee pods daily.
o Inspired by the increasing interest and shift towards sustainable Coffee
habits, a South African company created an innovative 4WKS Coffee pod,
which was launched in Cape Town in late 2019.
o The 4WKS Coffee pods are made from sugar cane pulp (known as
bagasse) and is 100% compostable. In contrast to regular plastic and
aluminium pods, the 4WKS Coffee pods are not airtight and is not
intended to last for longer than 4 weeks.
o The 4WKS pod is the result of a collaboration between Cape Town’s top
micro-roasters, namely Deluxe, Rosetta, Terbodore and Naked.
o Coffee Cup Recycling: Woolworths recently rolled out their Coffee cup
recycling initiative at all their stores across the Western Cape. This
initiative has been custom-designed and allows consumers, who purchase
Coffee products from their cafés, carts, or pods, to recycle their Coffee
cups in three easy steps. The recycled items are then collected, sorted,
and taken to recyclers.
o The increasing shift towards environmentally sustainable practices
continue to present opportunities for various industry players, such as
developing innovative compostable Coffee pods as well as recycling
initiatives, which are becoming increasingly more important to consumers
and have an influence on their Coffee consumption habits.

SAMPLE FROM REPORT SA INDUSTRY TRENDS
Ritual Coffee Brewer
o Developed by a group of young industrial designers making up The Surge
Company, the team has created the Ritual Coffee Brewer, which is
designed to capitalise on the growing demand for Coffee, modern-day
trends, as well as an evolving Coffee culture in Cape Town.
o The Ritual Coffee Brewer is designed to form part of a slow and socially-
based brewing process. The brewer makes use of a clean dynamic
approach, by combining the traditional jebena buna (Ethiopian Coffee
Ceremony) with the health benefits of the dripper and aeration of the
vandola. Additionally, the matt cone holding the paper filter is removable
and allows for personalisation, whilst the cork, which is insertable at either
end, serves for better grip and acts as an insulator.
o Finally, the design incorporates an aeration hole in the neck, allowing for
the oxygenation of the Coffee during the brewing process, similar to the
oxygenation that occurs during the production of wine.
Ella Instant Cappuccino
o Ella is a South African company that offers instant cappuccino mélange
capsules, that enable consumers to enjoy a barista quality cappuccino on-
demand, without the need for a machine or additional tools.
o The Ella capsules provide a premium shot of espresso Coffee, combined
with low-fat milk and is available in three flavours, namely classic, vanilla,
and mocha. Additionally, the contents of the capsules are preservative-
free and are designed with sustainability in mind, whereby the capsules
are made of 100% recyclable polypropylene packaging and have a shelf-
life of 1 year.
o In order to consume the product, the capsule needs to be shaken for 20
seconds, the seal is then removed and the contents poured into a cup.
Then, using the empty capsule for measure, hot water is added to the
capsule, before being poured into the cup.
o The company also offers nationwide delivery to consumers and the
product can also be purchased from retailers such as Takealot, Checkers,
and Pick n Pay.

ended 30 June 2019, revenue decreased by 2.1% from
approximately R13.4 billion in 2018 to approximately R13.2
billion in 2019, as seen in the adjacent table.
o AVI experienced a difficult year due to a difficult trading environment and
volume decreases, exacerbated by competitor discounting in some
categories.
o Overall, the AVI Group recorded an increase in cost of sales from
approximately R7.5 billion in 2018 to approximately R7.7 billion in 2019.
Furthermore, gross profit decreased from approximately R5.9 billion in
