Welcome to our brand new ‘flip round brochure’, which I am certain will inspire you to take part and join us over the Spring and Summer.

2014 to 2015 is a year that we will focus on celebrating ‘Women in the Arts’, as well as a whole host of diverse Art and Cultural activities on offer through the 100 day Yorkshire Cultural Festival leading up to the Tour de France Grand Departé and beyond.

In May we launch our Concert series celebrating Women in the world of Indian Classical Music with the distinctive vocals of Deepa Nair, closely followed by the Lords of Dance an exploration of male personality through dance. But we kick off the whole season by acknowledging the great contribution to Indian classical music made by the late Ustād Vilayat Khan through an intimate concert at the National Centre for Early Music in York featuring UK torch bearer of Indian Classical Music Ustād Dharambir Singh MBE, the formidable tabla player Pandit Yogesh Samsi and rising star Kaviraj Singh. The Summer Solstice Festival 2014, now in its third year, takes place on 21st June 2014 at Holy Trinity Leeds. This is an unforgettable experience of the very best of Indian Classical Music played from Sunset to Sunrise in the heart of the City of Leeds. If you have not attended before, then do not miss out this year. Check out page 8-9 for the line up.

Music and Dance to the Masses is a festival of the rich artistic and cultural traditions of the South Asian Communities of Leeds and Yorkshire; from Folk music and dance in the street to classical concerts from lunch time to twilight. This all takes place between May, Juneand July 2014 (see page 12-13)

SAA-uk’s vibrant learning programme culminates in July with end of year sharing; an opportunity for students to perform for family and friends in both classical dance and music, I hope you can join us and show your support for their collective journeys (see page 14)

Bringing the Summer to a close will be our Annual Summer School 2014; a unique opportunity for musicians of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to immerse themselves in learning and participating in Indian classical music from Sitar to Tabla with internationally renowned Ustads, all the way through to singing gurbani, ghazals, geets and Punjabi songs with vocalist Shaheen Khan

Deepa Nair Rasiya launches SAA-uk’s ‘Women in Music’ Concert Series 2014; celebrating the continued contribution women have and are making to the world of Indian Classical Music. In addition, two Yorkshire Young Musicians, Jaskiran Kaur and Simran Obhan will share their vocal talents. 

Deepa is a British Indian singer songwriter born and raised in London. Being of South Indian parentage, her initiation into Indian music was in the Carnatic vocal tradition. However, as a teenager growing up in Britain, she studied and explored Western Classical music, and as a young adult, developed a deep interest in North Indian Hindustani music, the exploration of which she continues to date - more recently, under the guidance of her Guru Smt Veena Sahasrabuddhe (Gwalior Gharana).

Deepa is a performer, recording artiste, a session musician for film and TV, a composer as well as teacher of Indian Vocal Music. Over the years her vocals have featured on numerous global music projects notably with legends such as George Harrison and Pandit Ravi Shankar on their album ‘Chants of India’; the Café Del Mar and the Buddha Bar series and many more; she has also sung on major film background scores such as ‘Bride and Prejudice’ and ‘Mistress of Spices’

In 2006, Deepa released her debut solo album, ‘Into the Light’ - her first production as a fully-fledged Indian composer/songwriter and vocalist. The album offered a distinctive and unparalleled sound achieved by the skilled blend of Indian vocals and Western instrumentation.

Deepa’s much- awaited second album is due for release in 2014.

SAA-uk is delighted to welcome London-based Kshetra Dance Company, artistically directed by Santosh Menon. Santosh trained at the famous Kalakshetra Academy in Chennai founded by Rukmini Devi Arundale in January 1936. For the first time audiences in Leeds will have the rare opportunity to experience Indian Classical dance by four male dancers; Santosh Menon, Swarup Menon, Vinod Nair and Vineet Pillai. The dancers will present their exploration and interpretation of two renowned deities Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna through their passion of pure Bharatanatyam Dance.

The evening will open with Pushpanjali, a traditional invocation, followed by three pieces about Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva, concluding with a fast-paced Thillana.

This is one of two concerts dedicated to Men in Dance.

Uday Bhawalkar is a standard bearer for Dhrupad, and a strong force in its growing recognition and popularity. Trained by Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar, and later under his elder brother, Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar Sahab, Uday ji is a musician who passionately believes that immersing oneself in the note of a Rāg, the self disappears and music takes on its own existence; the principle of ‘darshan’.

We are delighted that Uday Ji joins us this evening to share this passion, and provides the audience with an opportunity to immerse themselves in each note that is sung and enjoy a summers evening through one of the oldest forms of North Indian Classical Music. Uday ji will share the majestic and subtle nuances of this genre through his own unique style that is deeply imbedded in rāg ras and bhaav.

Uday will be accompanied by Awad Pratap Balasaheb on pakhavaj, an instrument with a deep mellow sound, rich harmonics and said to have been created in 14th Century during the reign of Akbar.

Diwali 23rd October 2014This ancient Hindu festival is celebrated every Autumn and is commonly known as the “festival of lights.” Spiritually it signifies the victory of light over darkness. Celebrations incorporate the lighting of lanterns, fireworks, prayers, and parties. It’s a very happy festival, with people decorating their homes, joining together to create Rangoli and exchanging gifts.

Suggested workshops: Create Rangoli or enjoy Indian dance workshops

Uttarayan and the Indian Kite Festival January 14th 2015Uttarayan is a highlight of the Hindu festival calendar and marks the day when Winter begins to turn into Summer, with more sunlight helping crops grow. Many cities enjoy a two day holiday and organise kite competitions. The idea of flying kites to celebrate Uttarayan was introduced by Muslims from Persia, but today people of all faiths and backgrounds gather together to fly kites in Gujarat each January.

Suggested workshops: making, decorating and flying kites!

Holi March 6th 2015 -This ancient Hindu festival is commonly known as the “festival of colours” and represents the arrival of Spring. What better reason to sing, dance, drum and immerse yourself in vibrant colours and costumes?!

Suggested workshops: Take your pick from dance, music, or colourful arts and crafts, all with a joyous, celebratory feel to mark the vibrancy of Holi.

Vaisakhi 14th April 2015Vaisakhi is celebrated across the North Indian subcontinent, particularly by Sikhs in the Punjab region. For Hindus and Buddhists it is the start of the New Year. It bears similarity to the Harvest Festival sometimes celebrated in the UK as it marks the beginning of the Spring harvest, as well as the birth of Khalsa (the collective body of initiated Sikhs). Celebration can include parties, parades, beautiful arrangements of flowers, fruits and grains, and in the UK and USA people use this time of year to do “seva” – selfless, charitable service.

Suggested workshops: Explore Punjabi folk arts such as Gidha Boliyan, or enjoy season-inspired arts and crafts.

Ramadan June 28th – July 28th 2014 | Eid al-Fitr (Rojar Eid) July 28th – 30th 2014All over the world Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan – a period of personal and spiritual reflection, improvement and devotion. The end of Ramadan - Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated with great devotion, with relatives and neighbours gathering to share the joys of this festival with each other.

Eid al-Adha (Korbani Eid) October 4th – 7th 2014Eid al-Adha means “Festival of Sacrifice” or “Greater Eid” is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide approximately 70 days after the end of the month of Ramadan. It also marks the end of the annual Hajj to Mecca.

Suggested workshops: Creating Eid cards, exploring mendhi patterns, Islamic calligraphy or decorating tiles inspired by geometric patterns.

This work forms part of our on-going commitment to engaging new participants and promote the rich South Asian arts that are part of our UK heritage. SAA-uk Indian Dance Academy lead tutors Rashmi Sudhir and Aditi Sen invite everyone to celebrate the achievements of all students age 3.5 years to adults, who have been training in the art of Bharatanatyam and Kathak Dance for the past academic year.

The evening will be full of rich colourful costumes; ornate jewelry and choreography that will provide a unique insight to Indian classical dance forms that have originated from North and South Indian, but are now part of the diverse art and cultural landscape of the UK.

The Yorkshire Festival and the Grand DepartApril - July 2014The Yorkshire Festival 2014, 100 days of art and culture to celebrate the Tour de France, begins on 27th March 2014 leading up to the Grand Depart in Leeds on 6th July 2014. The arrival of the biggest bike race in the world is being lead by a new celebration of what we have to offer all over the city and region, including hundreds of opportunities to delve into a rich variety of arts and culture – including work from SAA-uk. Join us every Friday to study Bharatanatyam and Kathak dance. The South Indian dance of Bharatanatyam combines grace, poise, rhythm and sculptured movement. Kathak uses delicate body movement, spins and fast footwork to enhance the fine art of storytelling.

After a two successful terms, the Yorkshire Indian Music Youth Ensemble continues to offer a unique ensemble experience to young musicians aged 8-25.

Guided by professional musicians Bhupinder Singh Chaggar and Arnab Chakrabarty, YIMYE focuses on the study and performance of classical Raags alongside a variety of instruments and musuicans, alongside encouraging the creation of new music.
