BETWEEN THE LINES: SPAMALOT

Something Silly No rmally when I write o ne o f these pro g ram no tes I try to draw a co nnectio nbetween the play that yo u are abo ut to see and so me o f the issues o r ideasthat co nnect it to the theater wo rld at larg e. But such a "serio us" missio n isdifficult with a play as silly as this o ne. T here are no "big g er" issues to befo und in Spamalot. It exists o nly to be fun. Ho wever, I did make a disco very abo ut the fo rm o f co medy that makes thissilly musical wo rk. I realiz ed that Spamalo t is a satire o f a satire. But even thatmakes it so und mo re intellectually lo fty than it really is. It is, in fact, a burlesqueo f a burlesque. A burlesque is a type o f co medy that makes fun o f ano thertheatrical o r literary fo rm. So , the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail , o nwhich to nig ht's musical is based, was making fun o f (burlesquing ) the classicleg end o f King Arthur and his knig hts. T he sho w that yo u will experienceto nig ht is a burlesque o f that burlesque. It uses the Arthurian leg end to po kefun at o ur lo ve o f the o rig inal mo vie and o f Bro adway musical stereo typeswhile at the same time using tho se same devices to make fun o f itself. T his so unds way mo re co mplicated than it sho uld and no t very funny. So ...no w fo r so mething co mpletely different...

It is time to enjo y this very silly sho w.
