BECOME A PARTNER IN EDUCATIONSARATOGA COUNTY – Are you 55 or over and looking for a volunteer op-portunity? The Retired & Senior Volunteer Program of Saratoga County is partnering with Cheryl’s Lodge to recruit volunteers as homework help-ers. Volunteers can spend 1 to 2 hours a week or as little as 1 to 2 hours a month assisting students with their homework, reading to children or have them read to you, help with simple craft projects or supervise their use of computers. If you are a RSVP volunteer or if you would like more informa-tion about becoming a volunteer, please call Janet Haskell at 884-4110.
SARATOGA COUNTY FAIR PRIVATE LABEL WINE & BEERSARATOGA – In support of Governor Cuomo’s and Agriculture Commis-sioner Ball’s initiative to support regional wineries and breweries, the Saratoga County Fair has contracted with Ledge Rock Hill Winery in north-ern Saratoga County, and Olde Saratoga Brewing Company in Saratoga Springs to offer the only private labeled “Fair” wines and beer in New York State. The Saratoga County Fair Green Apple Blanc (a crisp, crunchy green apple flavor with a light initial tartness and sweet finish) and Black Beauty (pleasantly sweet and bursting with blackberry flavor) are both fruit in-fused white wines, while the Judges Stand Ale is medium in body and pale in color, with slight hop bitterness, making them perfect refreshments on a hot summer day. These are offered only by the glass in the Live Music Pavilion, and only during Fair week. We hope you have the opportunity to experience these products by two fine Saratoga County enterprises.

OIL PAINTINGS OF KEN WILSON ON DISPLAYGLENS FALLS – Saunders Gallery of Fine Art at bjsartworks presents The Oil Paintings of Ken Wilson, July 18 - August 29. Meet the Artist Reception: Sat., July 18, 4-6pm. Saratoga Art-ist, Ken Wilson is an equine artist, who also paints the region-
al landscape. Ken was born and raised in Albany, NY, where attended high school and studied at the University at Albany. Ken has been an oil painter and graphite pen-cil artist for over 30 years, having won awards at jur-ied events from New York to North Carolina. He recently got back into painting after
setting it aside, during his 20-year law enforcement career. Ken is self-taught, which has been accomplished throughout the years by voracious study of painting techniques, leaning towards contemporary realism and impressionism. “I think of my work as a dichotomy of dynamic, contrasting styles. The
heart-pounding power, ath-leticism and grace captured in my thoroughbreds, com-pliment the sedate, peaceful and sublime feelings evoked by my landscapes.” Ken Wilson

THE JOYFUL NOISE, “WE ARE ONE”
CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Joyful Noise was a con-temporary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District region and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young people, led spiritu-ally and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into “Christian Mu-sic Ministries”. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunate passing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the rec-ognition, that still, “We are One”. A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reuniting and catching up. The reunion will culmi-nate with a barbeque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethle-hem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forever impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the parents and family members in the Saturday night service who supported each of us during our “JN” years. During these early planning stages we are interested in help locating former members, and iden-tifying folks to assist on vari-ous committees that have been formed. Please visit the Facebook page for Chris-tian Music Ministries if you are a former member and want to connect, or contact us at [email protected]

WONDERFUL HOMES NEEDED FOR WONDERFUL ANIMALS
CAPITAL DISTRICT – Capital District Humane Association, Inc. (CDHA.NET) is an all-volunteer, no-kill animal rescue group that has been saving animals of all kinds throughout the cap-ital region and beyond since 1988. Our goal is to place each animal in our program in a wonderful home where it will be treated like a valued member of the family. We re-home dogs with no charge for surrender. Since CDHA is a rescue group and doesn’t have a facility of its own, all its dogs are in foster homes and dogs are showcased at pet adoption clinics held three times each month.

2015 SARATOGA COUNTY FAIR -
ART AND SCIENCE PROJECTS FOR
EDUCATION EXHIBITSSARATOGA COUNTY – The 174th Saratoga County Fair invites Saratoga County Schools each year to display their art, science and social exhibits at the fair from July 21-26, 2015. Students also enter projects on their own. Three School Districts with the best displays win awards of a first prize TV & DVD combination, second and third prizes one TV and one DVD; four outstanding student entries receive a cash prize. There are ten honorable mentions for art and ten honorable mentions for Social/Science, which will also receive awards. Everyone will receive a ribbon. Categories are: Art, Social Studies/Science, Photography, Graphic Arts & Group Projects. For judging purposes, there will be two age groups; grades K-6 and grades 7-12. Sue Leahey, Kim Leahey & Joan Joyner, Education Superintendents, believe that the young citizens of Saratoga County are an important part of the community and should have the opportunity to share their school projects with the many thousands of people at-tending the fair. This year, Education will have “craft time” ev-ery day at 5pm so come and join the fun. Set up date for the education exhibits is Thursday, July 16, from 10am to 2pm at the Saratoga Fair Grounds under the Grandstand. Entries for this department will be accepted on this day only. For more information on entering, call Sue or Kim Leahey at 885-4084 or Joan Joyner at 587-4622. You may also call the Saratoga County Fair Office at 885-9701. Visit the Fair website at www.saratogacountyfair.org.
MENTORS NEEDED FOR LOCAL NON-PROFITCAPITAL REGION – Spring is coming and with it a time to renew, re-group, and re-prioritize. What better way than to begin a new volunteer opportunity! I am I can, a mentor-ing program for girls in grades 9-12, is seeking professional women to work with new students to the program. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student on a one-to-one basis, while developing a relation-ship that provides support and guidance in achieving their post-graduation goals. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. The organization is cur-rently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Shenende-howa, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your com-munity, please visit our website at www.iamicanachieve.org or contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 688-3010 x102 or at [email protected].

This is a great time of year for gardeners; especially this year with a near-perfect growing season. There are home grown flowers in vases in the living room, dining room and even the kitchen. While the perennial flowers follow their blooming cycle with amazing precision, the annuals have entered their “frenzy mode” as the days gradually begin to shorten. I’m always amazed at how quickly they grow as summer wanes. My annual flowers were dawdled through May and early June we had. We usually get a break from mowing the lawn in July. Not this year. I’ve had to mow the lawn every week thanks to well-timed thunderstorms. I don’t mind really since a nice green lawn makes such a beautiful “frame” for the flowerbeds. I’d much rather spend my time mowing than dragging the hose around trying to keep everything alive. Then there’s the bounty of berries, fruit and vegetables that we’re starting to enjoy this year. The strawberries this year came and went quickly but, the birds and I have also been enjoying all the blackberries and raspberries that are appearing in such abundance. A couple of years ago we planted some thornless raspberries and we’re thrilled with the huge crop they’ve provided. It took a couple of years for them to get going but they’ve really start pumping out the berries. There’s only one little glitch; Ajax the dog has taken a liking to strawberries and raspberries so we have to keep an eye on him. A couple of time I’ve caught him in there munching the berries right off the plants. I guess it is our own fault since we found it amusing to toss him the overripe berries when we were harvesting the wild berries that grow on the property. Ajax learns quickly. Perhaps we shouldn’t have planted thornless varieties. He won’t “harvest” the wild thorny berries but has no reservations about going into the thornless ones in the garden. I guess it is a tradeoff since, when we brush Ajax, we take the clumps of hair and tuck them around the perimeter of the garden to repel the deer that are all around. During the couple of years that we were dogless, we had all kinds of problems with the deer. They’d go into the garden at night and strip the tomatoes right off the vines. Beans and lettuce? Forget about it. While we still see deer in the fields, they have, so far, left the garden alone. I guess I’ll have to forgive Ajax a few berries since he’s helping to keep the deer away. All around town I see that the various members of the hibiscus are starting to put on their show. This includes althea, The Rose of Sharon. I have a short row of purple althea that has a double flower much like a carnation that is putting on a nice show. It seems that althea are gaining in popularity lately. While mine are double flowering, I greatly admire the single flowering varieties that I’m starting to see more of. Their flower closely resembles that of the tropical hibiscus that is so popular in the south. These single flowering altheas weren’t available when I planted my hedge 10 years ago or I would have surely opted for one of those. Rose of Sharon is available in a wide range of colors but tend toward the reds and lavenders. There are even varieties that have a bi-colored flower and there’s a nice white that I’ve see as well. While the althea is a woody shrub, there’s another hardy hibiscus that is perennial in nature (it dies to the ground in winter) that is well worth commenting on. Like althea or Rose of Sharon, the mallow hibiscus is a relative of the tropical hibiscus although the flowers are much larger. The showy mallow hibiscus will grow from the ground to a height of 4’ to 6’ during each growing season. Mallow hibiscus flowers range in color from white to deep purple and encompass every shade of pink in between. As if this weren’t enough, the flowers can be as large as a dinner plate! I know you’ve seen these around town since they are in flower right now. A lot of folks don’t realize that this plant is hardy in our area and with easily survive over winter to return larger and showier each year. Each of the giant flowers that mallow hibiscus produces will only remain open for one day. Fortunately, they produce plenty of buds so the show goes on for at least a couple of weeks and even longer for a well-established clump. If you plant either of these northern members of the hibiscus family, you’ll need to be patient in spring. Neither the woody shrub althea nor the perennial mallow hibiscus will show any sign of life until spring is well under way. I usually see no sign of life from either in my yard until the lilacs are in bloom. That’s when the first leaves appear on my althea and the mallow hibiscus is just poking a shoot up from the soil. They are amazing plants and easily deserve a place in your garden. Thanks for the read.

YADDO COMPOSER’S MUSIC CELEBRATES
SARATOGA’S CENTENNIAL
SARATOGA SPRINGS – The Saratoga Choral Festival an-nounces its fifteenth season. Singers meet for rehearsals over a three-week period in Saratoga Springs and will perform in a concert at the Spa Little Theater on Sunday, August 2nd, at 3:00pm. As part of the city’s centennial celebration, this summer’s concert will feature music by world-renowned Yaddo composers Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Da-vid Del Tredici, and spiritual and sacred choral works by Nathaniel Dett, one of the few African American com-posers invited to Yaddo in the early years. Included on the program is rarely heard music by a more recent Yaddo resident and Skid-more professor Evan Mack (The Fountain) and Thomas Oboe Lee (Mechthild von Magdeburg for chorus and strings). Performances are held in the Spa Little Theater, the summer home of Opera Saratoga and the Saratoga Chamber Music Festival, in Saratoga Spa State Park. The Festival is under the artistic direction of Andrea Good-man, currently the Director of the Cantilena Chamber Choir and the Northern Berkshire Chorale in Western Massachusetts, and former director of Choruses at Skid-more College. The concert is sponsored by Saratoga Liv-ing Magazine, and through a generous grant from the Saratoga Arts Council and the Cohoes Savings Foun-dation. Tickets at $30 ($20 for seniors) are available at the SPAC box office, online at www.saratogachoralfest.org, email [email protected] or by phone at 518-852-4851.

Renting out a home is a great way for homeowners to earn some extra income. Some homeowners rent their homes in an attempt to wait out a sagging hous-ing market, while others see renting their homes as a long-term commitment to their fi nancial futures.
Being a landlord has its advantages and disadvan-tages, and the decision to rent out a home is one that homeowners should not take lightly. The follow-ing are a handful of factors homeowners should con-sider as they try to decide if renting out their homes is the right move for them.
Time
Being a landlord is a 24/7/365 commitment, as tenants will expect their landlords to be on call at all times. Tenants will call their landlords should plumb-ing fi xtures suddenly burst in the middle of the night, and landlords must be avail-able to answer such calls no matter how inconvenient they become. If you are not willing or able to devote the time necessary to tend to tenant needs, then being a landlord may not be for you.
Maintenance
Whereas homeowners may be able to delay making certain repairs in the homes
where they lay their heads, such a luxury is not aff ord-ed when they are renting out their other properties. Repairs and maintenance of rental properties cannot be put on the back burner while you save money to fi x them. In addition, if even minor repairs typically pose a problem for you, you may soon discover that hiring a handyman or discounting rent for live-in supers is cut-ting into your profi ts or mak-ing it diffi cult to pay bills. Before deciding to rent out your home, determine the potential costs of maintain-ing a second property and use that information to de-cide if renting the property is a sound fi nancial invest-ment or one that might put you in the red.
Tenants
Many people who have rented have a horror story or two about an absentee or indiff erent landlord, but landlords also have their own such stories about nightmare tenants. When mulling whether or not to rent out your home, con-sider who your prospective tenants will be and if your community will supply the steady stream of renters you will need to pay your mortgage and bills without jeopardizing your fi nances. The last things fi rst-time or
even experienced landlords want are tenants who can-not pay their rent and/or those who are disrespectful of their neighbors and their landlords, so it’s best to give ample consideration to your potential pool of renters before deciding to rent out your home.
Help
Many landlords work with local real estate agencies or property management fi rms who will do much of the leg-work with regard to fi nding tenants and maintaining properties. Research the cost of such help to deter-mine if you can aff ord it and still make renting your home fi nancially viable.
Attorney fees are another cost prospective landlords must consider. Landlord-tenant laws can be diffi cult to decipher for fi rst-time landlords, so it helps to have an attorney who can help you decipher these laws and how they should govern your actions as a landlord. But attorneys are not inex-pensive, and they must be worked into your budget as well.
Renting a home is a great way to earn extra income, but homeowners must con-sider a host of factors before putting their homes up for rent.

EASY WAYS TO MODERNIZE YOUR
10-YEAR-OLD VEHICLE(NAPS)—New cars off er
the latest in infotainment, safety and convenience but what if you aren’t in the market for a new ride? Fortunately, there are many aftermarket products that can add value to a car you’ve already paid off , and are often more advanced than factory-installed features on the road today.
“The aftermarket off ers an array of options for car and truck owners,” said Chris Kersting, president and CEO of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA). The trade association represents the $33 billion automotive specialty equipment industry that includes thousands of products that are available to enhance a vehicle’s styling, performance, comfort and convenience. “Install these items into your older vehicle and you’ll have all the latest technologies to enhance your driving—and your passengers’—experience.”
BluetoothIntegrating wireless
functionality from your phone and other devices is an easy way to add convenience and, most importantly, a safer hands-free experience to your daily drive.
The simplest and least expensive option is a stand-alone universal Bluetooth kit that works with any car stereo and comes with a small speaker and microphone. This option does not require any modifi cations but is limited to hands-free calling only.A New Receiver/Head Unit
The best option for adding Bluetooth calling and streaming is to purchase
a new stereo with this technology built in. If music is your major motivation, you won’t have to retire your old CDs, as there are plenty of units that still off er a disc player as well as a USB port to connect with your phone or with a portable drive for MP3/WMA playback, and an auxiliary input for universal connectivity.
SoundNow that your trusty
transportation has some new hands-free audio features, it’s probably time to upgrade the sound quality in your ride. Go for speakers that fi t in your car’s pre-existing mounts, and add an amplifi er and subwoofer for a clear and dynamic audio experience. Make sure you match your new speakers to
the correct speaker wire for peak performance.
Heads Up Display (HUD)Aftermarket Heads Up
Display (HUD) units mount to the dashboard in front of the steering wheel and project data onto a transparent screen or a transparent fi lm mounted on the windshield in your line of sight. This allows you to receive turn-by-turn navigation, vehicle speed information, and lane guidance instructions while keeping your eyes on the road.Portable Navigation Device
Smartphones off er plenty of navigation options, but the latest portable navigation devices (PND) go beyond simple driving directions. PNDs off er voice
command, spoken direction, large screens, and real-time traffi c updates. Many units even search points of interest from Yelp, Google, Trip-Advisor and more.
Blind Spot MonitoringRelatively new even in
the latest vehicles, blind spot monitoring systems detect cars that may be out of your line of sight. The kit relies on two front and two rear sensors mounted to the bumper that work together to detect a vehicle in your blind spot, and an LED display inside your vehicle lights up on the appropriate side when one is detected. An audible alarm will then sound if you then signal and intend to change lanes.
Rearview CameraRearview cameras help
drivers see what is behind them when the car is in reverse. A complete setup includes a camera mounted to the rear of the vehicle, a receiver, and a display mounted on the dashboard. Major manufacturers of aftermarket head units off er camera add-on packages to their receivers with in-dash display, and some GPS units off er the add-on as well, making the update inexpensive and easy to install.
Vehicle Tracking and Telematics
There are a few products that off er detailed information about your vehicle via real-time notifi cations from your smartphone, including driving habits, fuel, engine
and battery monitoring, and engine trouble code translation. The device will even send mobile alerts when the car arrives at a certain location, travels beyond a preset GPS “fence” or exceeds a specifi ed speed limit...ideal for anyone who wants to keep tabs on their 10-year-old car when others are behind the wheel.

DID YOU KNOW?
Private sellers may know that the amount of mileage on their vehicles will go a long way toward determin-ing their asking price, but they may not know that cer-tain mileage milestones can aff ect how prospective buy-ers view their automobiles.
For example, savvy buyers know that manufacturer warranties tend to expire after three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes fi rst. That may make a vehi-cle less attractive to buyers or inspire buyers to ask that the price of an extended warranty be deducted from the asking price of the ve-hicle. Another important mileage marker to consider is the 60,000-mile marker. Upon reaching 60,000 miles, many vehicles need certain upgrades, including new brakes. Sellers who wish to unload their preowned ve-hicle as quickly as possible may want to make these upgrades prior to selling their vehicles and showcase the service records to pro-
spective buyers. If not, sell-ers should be fl exible with their asking price, as buyers are likely to know that sig-nifi cant maintenance could be just around the corner for a vehicle that has exceeded the 60,000 mile mark.
