A soldier who left Cuba to sail to present day Mexico in 1519. He had heard great stories about wealthy lands owned by a king named Montezuma II.

MONTEZUMA REALLY LIKED CORTES!! HE THOUGHT HE WAS A GOD AT FIRST!

• Cortes took him prisoner and seized control of Tenochtitlan. The capital was soon destroyed and Montezuma was killed.

FRANCISCO PIZARRO

• Yet another conquistador who had heard rumors of the Inca cites in the Andes of South America.

Pizzaros troops, although outnumbered, captured the great Inca capital at Cuzco in present day Peru and killed the Inca leaders. By 1534 Pizzaro and his Native Americans allies had conquered the entire Inca Empire.

BOTH THE INCA AND AZTEC EMPIRES COULD NOT CONTEND WITH EUROPEAN WEAPONS!

• The Spanish had successfully wiped out two major American Empires in a few short years. Thousands of Inca and Aztec where murdered

and many died of diseases Europeans had brought over.
