Description:
Sparta thinks it is important to stand out from the competition. We are always looking for something new and striving to improve our bikes. It figures, then, that our pay-off is ‘Something Special’: a statement that challenges us to constantly monitor the quality and uses of Sparta bicycles; to look out for exciting ideas and refined solutions for special situations. Good examples are the ‘Father and Mother' bike, the transport bike and the many cycling solutions. And, of course, the Sparta ION. SPARTA is Number One in Europe when it comes to E-bikes. That’s because SPARTA uniquely invented the ultimate E-bike: the SPARTA ION.

Sparta was founded on 1 September 1917 by Leendert Schakel together with his partners, Verbeek and Krijgsman. From 1926 on, Sparta began building a factory for assembling bicycles, milk carts, delivery bikes and cargo trikes. Schakel had a great talent for technology. It was therefore inevitable that he made the next step - designing a moped. The mopeds caught on in the Netherlands. By specialising, the company even developed the capacity to export to other European countries, Indonesia, Tahiti, Africa and America. Modern Sparta In 1967, the contours of the modern Sparta bike started to take shape. In the early ‘seventies, the company developed a ‘one-piece frame’ for their bicycles, a concept that reinforced Sparta’s position as a quality brand. The bicycle once again became the basis for new developments. A good example from this period is the Spartamet, the famous motor-assisted bike.

Breakthrough innovations The combination of technology and bicycles has continued throughout the history of Sparta. This drive to innovate led to a new breakthrough product. In 1999, Sparta brought out the Pharos, the first electric bike in the Netherlands. This bike was mainly bought by a small user group, mostly people with inconveniences such as arthritis. But a new vision was born. In 2003, Sparta introduced the Sparta ION®. It was the first successful electric bike to be widely accepted in the Netherlands and in Europe. The Sparta ION® was user-friendly, had great technological advantages and was also the first ‘invisible’ e-bike ever developed. The battery pack was concealed in the frame, which made it barely distinguishable from a ‘normal’ bike. The ION® continued to develop and has been the best selling electric bike in the Netherlands and in the rest of Europe for years now. To sum up, Sparta is a company with an illustrious history that successfully combines tradition with modern looks and technology.

indexSparta: trail-blazers in e-bike innovationSparta makes special bikes for everyone. “Something Special” is an ambitious programme that keeps us on our toes. We love to look beyond the boundaries of our sector and seek out applications and functionalities that increase the bike’s versatility. A example of our urge to innovate – for that is what drives us – is the Sparta ION®. The world’s first successful electric bike. We constantly continue to work on the ION®’s success. It is with good reason that the ION® is far and away the best selling electric bike in Europe. And it is with good reason that the ION® comes top, year after year, in countless polls and e-bike tests.

We are also ‘something special’ because we attract attention year after yearwith our striking innovations. For example, we regularly add new software modules to the Sparta ION®. Sparta continues to develop the e-bike at every level. In late 2009 for instance, Sparta launched the E-motion, a completely new E-bike line, which has already become a resounding success given the various prizes it has been winning. In order to offer you the most complete range among all bike suppliers on the market, we have introduced several new products this year too. They include some superb electric lifestyle models, an electric tandem and an electric delivery bicycle.

the Sparta smileYou can always tell Sparta cyclists from their contented smiles. We think they smile because they feel they are riding a unique bike that is specially made for them. That’s a feeling that we would love to share with you, too. We hope, therefore, that you will find your bike in this catalogue.

Sparta ion®, the no. 1 e-bike in europe! Some 12 years ago, we presented the world with the first electric bike. Since then we have been continually refining our products and working on new techniques. This advance in know-how has led to the introduction of the Sparta ION®. The Sparta ION® is based on our own in-house developed advanced technology. Where others use existing (sub) systems, Sparta is the sole Dutch brand to decide to develop all of the technology in the ION® itself. This has enabled us constantly to improve or adapt to specific needs all parts of the electric bike. Thanks to this advanced technology, every year the Sparta ION® also wins the most prizes and awards and with well over 350,000 owners it is the most sold electric bike. That makes the Sparta ION® the No 1 e-bike in Europe!

the best technology!Sparta has equipped the ION® with the best technology. For instance, the ION® has a direct drive motor. This means that the motor does not have any transmission components, brushes, gearwheels or other wear-sensitive parts. The ION® motor is therefore powerful, quiet and above all its drive is comfortable. That comfort is something that you feel, or rather do not feel. This is because the ION® drive is smooth so that you will not notice any shocks or unexpected acceleration.

The Sparta ION® has the most advanced battery packs. In its ION® range, Sparta offers either Nickel Metal Hybrid (NiMH) or Lithium Ion (Li-ion) batteries. You will not so much notice the difference in use between the different types, but rather the difference in the way in which the batteries are controlled. For example, some systems cannot be charged below freezing point. All Sparta ION® battery packs are equipped with high quality battery management systems that ensure stable and dependable use. That is also the reason why we are the sole manufacturer not to impose within the guarantee period any limitations on the number of battery charges or the number of kilometres ridden per year. Last but not least, all batteries are of course EMC certified.

new riding programsJust as any modern car, every modern electric bike has the necessary software on board. The Sparta ION® software is being continually developed, and that is something you notice! Not only do the riding programs continue to become better and more enjoyable, you will also see new options constantly

becoming available for your Sparta ION®. Sparta is in the unique situation of receiving feedback from the now hundreds of thousands of users about their riding experiences. Just as with a modern car, the information from your bike is exchanged with a central computer. This is done automatically every time your bike is with your Sparta ION® dealer for servicing. The software means that, even after you bought your ION®, your dealer can update it or adapt your riding programs to your preferences. This continually makes the ION® better and more advanced.

Based on the data read out, your ION® dealer will give you practical for use and maintenance. But there is more still. Based on the cycle’s use, new applications are being conceived and developed. With the ION® we are now able to offer you 15 or more functions. These include a parking function, a service indicator, automatic lighting, time and temperature display, ride recording, heart rate monitoring interface, etc. With Sparta ION® your bike is therefore always up-to-date, even years after you bought it. Find more information on ION® technology and other Sparta systems in the decision guide and on the ION® modules page.

Innovation is important. Thanks to many add-ons, the experience and pleasure of cycling on a Sparta ION® is constantly being improved. With ION® technology, you can extend the features of your ION® as you wish. All the options are available in modular form and the number of modules expands every year.

SUM Software Update ModuleWe regularly develop updates that make your ION® safer and more comfortable. Thanks to the Software Update Module, you can always keep your ION® ‘up to date’.

ppM personal programmingThanks to the Personal Programme Module, your ION® - with its intelligent software – can be fully adjusted to match your personal cycling style. If you live in a hilly area or plan to go to one on holiday, the Plus Program is a must for you. This is an extra-powerful program that gives new riding characteristics to the three pedal settings of your ION®. If you more frequently ride on flat areas, you should opt to install the ‘battery friendly’ Eco program. As you can see, there is a riding profile to suit everyone.

hSM cycling from the heartBut there are even more developments that make cycling more pleasurable. Not only are we refining the riding programs, we are also adding new functionalities such as the new heartbeat function in the Heart Support module. Your heartbeat determines how much pedal assistance you get. You can cut down the effort for your heart by making the ION® work harder, or you can stimulate your heartbeat. In this way, the ION® becomes a kind of cardio-fitness machine! An accredited Sparta ION® dealer can install this software update for you. This means you always have the latest software available to you**. Do you already have a Sparta ION®? If so, ask whether your version can also be updated

paM automatic drive and boost button**This module is very handy for manoeuvering, parking and starting up to 3kph forward and backward. With a higher velocity the Power Module will turn into a Power Boost. This is very useful for a steep hill and strong wind. At higher speed this module will boost you up hill!

BUM - xhp Strong, silent motor, strong batteryThe Sparta ION® has a very powerful motor; the Xtra High Power motor delivers considerably more power than most other brands. Of course, this calls for a powerful battery. Every battery starts to wear out as soon as you acquire it, but some wear out slower than others. The durable battery has guaranteed high quality, has no limitations on use* and is extremely reliable. This is wonderfully reassuring. The combination of the battery and the Xtra High Power motor considerably increases the range of the bike. Furthermore, this ‘superbattery’ can be recharged 50% faster than most other electric bike brands when you use the Xtra Quick Charger. The ION® is pure cycling pleasure. No other electric bike enjoys such positive acclaim or has won so many prizes as the Sparta ION®. Your bike.

pdM Simple controlsThe Premium display module provides optimum convenience of operation. On your handlebar is a removable display with the following functions:• counters for total km. ridden and km. ridden on the day• speedometer• lights on/off/automatic• pedal assistance settings• battery check• temperature gauge• date• start disabler• maintenance interval• controls for acquired extras

* Providing the conditions shown in the manual are adhered to.** Depending on model and year of manufacture.

SpaRta ion® and otheR electRic ModelSHow does Sparta ION® differ from other E-bikes? And what do you need to look out for when buying an electric bike?

a closer look at the differenceThe Sparta E-motion and the Sparta electric lifestyle models work with a different technology to Sparta ION® and that is a difference you can notice. Compare it to driving an advanced car and a somewhat less expensive model. Both drive well, yet differently. A Sparta ION® represents the absolute top in electric cycling. For example, a Sparta dealer is able to read out the intelligent software, install new riding programs, add new functionalities. In this way, your Sparta ION® always stays up-to-date even when a few years old.

In its equipment too, Sparta ION® makes the difference. The Sparta ION® is equipped with a pedal rotation sensor and smooth variable ‘direct drive’ motor, which makes the pedalling assistance smooth and comfortable. The Sparta E-motion and the electric lifestyle models use a speed sensor. This does not respond to your exertion, but rather to your speed. It feels a little less comfortable, but still rides well. Most ION® models are also equipped with a comprehensive display with no less than 15 functions! Lastly, every Sparta ION® is finished in high-quality materials.

Ultimately of course, it depends on you personally experiencing what will suit you best. Sparta is happy to help you on your way to find your perfect electric bike. A decision chart, like the one on page 9, will help you here. However, there is actually only one real way to discover what will suit you best. Book a free test ride with your local Sparta dealer.

how big is the tank of my electric bike? The total distance that you can cover with your electric bike without charging we call the operating range. Undoubtedly, you would like to know exactly how many kilometres you could ride with a full battery. Sadly, that is not so simple to say. Aside from the battery’s capacity, the operating range is influenced by many different factors, some of which include: total weight, resistance, pedaling assistance level, riding program, riding style, battery management function.

Battery capacityPeople often compare batteries based on their capacity (Ampere-hours). However, comparing only by capacity does not give the full picture, since a battery pack’s performance also depends on the battery voltage while it is discharging. Displaying just ‘11 Ah’ does not tell you anything about your battery’s capacity and could mislead you. The best way of comparing batteries is to look at the amount of energy that the battery is capable of delivering expressed in Watt-hours (Wh). The number of Watt-hours takes account of both the battery’s capacity and the average voltage (V) while discharging. Put simply: the higher the number of Watt-hours, the higher your operating range!

operating range of Sparta electric bikesThe capacity of the Sparta models is between 240 and 360 Wh. Looking at the icons under each bike makes this easy to compare. The table below gives an indication of the expected operating range based on the Eco program. However, it is important to remember any influencing factors that could shorten your operating range significantly.

power of the motorWhen you are buying a car, you will certainly look at the engine’s power and horsepower is a much-used indicator of this. That does not hold true for electric bikes. The power delivered is a great deal less than with a car, although that is good too, after all you want to reach your destination safely. With electric bikes, we indicate the motor’s power in Newton-metres or Nm. To make it easy for you we therefore publish the number of Newton-metres by each electric bike. This helps you genuinely compare the motor power of all the bikes.

example calculationA battery with a capacity of 7 Ampere-hours (Ah) and a voltage of 36 Volts (V) delivers as much energy as a battery with a capacity of 10.5 Ampere-hours and a voltage of 24 Volts: 7Ah x 36 V = 252 Wh and 10.5 Ah x 24 V = 252 Wh. To make it easy for you we therefore publish the number of Watt-hours by each electric bike. This helps you genuinely compare the operating ranges of all the electric bikes.

an electRic Bike, BUt Which one?Want an electric bike, but not sure which one to choose? Naturally, your personal taste and preferences play an important part. This will be decisive when choosing from among our electric upright bicycles or carrier bicycles. Yet there are also significant differences between the electric bikes, which may play a role. Sometimes the differences are clear, such as with our electric delivery bicycle, the ION® Entree with its extremely low frame height, or the electric tandem. However, with many of the models in our electric range, the differences extend beyond what you see at first glance. We are therefore glad to offer you this decision guide to help you choose your ideal electric bike.

Which choices count? The choice of the motor’s position and the battery’s location is not just an aesthetic matter. The positions affect the daily use and in the end will determine how satisfied you are with your bike. In addition different kinds of battery system exist, which will match your requirements for use to a greater or lesser degree.

Question 1: The first question for deciding the battery position is whether you are able to charge your bike when it is parked. If you have a power point in or near the parking facility, you can opt for an ION® model, which has the battery incorporated invisibly in the frame. The additional advantage of an invisible battery is that the frame gives it extra protection.

Question 2a: If you are opting for an electric bike with ‘invisible’ battery, then the next question is whether you would like an extra low frame height. If you do, you could decide on an ION® GL, L or Entree. The abbreviation ‘LE’ indicates low frame height models.

Question 2b: If you would prefer a normal frame height, you could choose the standard GL or L model. If you want a sportier bike, you could choose between the XT with 8 gears and the XTS with 24 gears. Furthermore, at 40 Newton-metres, the motor of the XTS is the most powerful motor available.

Question 3a: If you would like an electric bike with a removable battery, you could choose between the benefits of advanced ION® technology, or for the more basic E-motion models (see also difference between ION® and E-motion elsewhere in this magazine).

Question 3b: The next choice with either the ION® or E-motion is between 8 or 24 gears. The electric bikes with 8 gears are fittet with hub gears and chain covers. The 24 gear versions have a derailleur and a semi-open chain guard. A bike with chain cover and gear-hub system usually requires less servicing. Furthermore, the Sparta ION® with 24 gears is fitted with a motor in the rear wheel. Because most of the weight pushes down on the rear while cycling, rear wheel drive makes for a more comfortable ride. You can as it were feel the difference between being pushed and being pulled along.

Question 4a: If you decide on the ION® RX+, RX+ Blackline, RX, RXS+, RXS, you could then choose a model with a low frame height (LE) or a more trendy model.

Question 4b: The final choice is related directly to the intended use. If you would like an extra long operating range and a lighter bike, you could opt for the ION® RX+, RX+ Blackline or RXS+. These models have 40% more operating range and a lighter Lithium ION battery.

operating rangeIf you regularly cycle far (on average over 40 kilometres) or regularly ride a hilly route, you could also let your choice be determined by the electric bike’s operating range or the motor’s power. The operating range is determined by the amount of energy that you can take with you in an electric bike or the number of Watt-hours (Wh). For every Sparta electric bike, we state the amount of Wh the bike contains. The motor’s power is expressed in Newton-metres or Nm.

ion® or another electric bike from Sparta…Sparta ION® is by far the best-known electric bike. It is also the bike with the most advanced technology. Not only can the motor be adjusted dependably, quietly and steplessly, every ION® also has the most advanced battery pack. Many manufacturers impose limitations on the number of battery charges or the number of kilometres ridden falling within the guarantee. The Nickel Metal Hybrid (NiMH) and the Lithium ION® (Li-ion) batteries in the ION® system do not have such limitations. You can therefore charge up and cycle without limit.
