The Catholic Work Ethic

Location: Aronimink Golf Club

DR. PAUL VOSSJanuary 14

Dr. Paul J. Voss is president of Ethikos, a consultancy specializing in culture, leadership, and executive coaching, and an associate professor at Georgia State University. A gifted public speaker and award-winning teacher, Dr. Voss offers courses on Shakespeare, Dante, Business Ethics, Renaissance Literature, and the History of the Book, publishes on a wide variety of topics, and regularly appears on television and radio programs. He was recently profiled in The Wall Street Journal. In 2019, he addressed the Executive Session at the NATO Supreme Headquarters in Belgium. He and his wife Mary have five children and live in suburban Atlanta.

The human person was not meant to be idle. But nor were we meant to be a “work machine,” whose value is determined by what we produce. The word “career” often defines us, rather than us defining career.

Work in the life of a Catholic involves industriousness, stewardship and balance. There is a manner in which it should animate our lives. Catholic teaching and human experience reveal to us that there is a “Catholic work ethic,” and it is in contrast to the Protestant work ethic, articulated by Max Weber, which undergirded much of the formative years of our nation.

Dr. Voss will speak of the life of one largely unknown saint who displayed heroic virtue and is a model for business leaders and entrepreneurs.

Catholic Values—Immutable and Under Fire

Location: The Union League of Philadelphia

CONGRESSMAN CHRIS SMITHFebruary 18

Respected by Democrats, Independents and Republicans alike, Congressman Chris Smith is now serving his 20th term. Chris was just 25 years old in 1978 when, while working for his family’s sporting goods store, he ran for Congress against a long-time incumbent. Although he lost that first campaign, he won two years later in a rematch with Congressman Frank Thompson. Chris Smith was first nominated by President Barack Obama as a member of the U.S. delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 and then again by President Donald Trump in 2017. He will join us to speak about his up-close and personal battles on behalf of the Church, the unborn, natural law, and those who have little or no voice in the culture.

Few can deny that Catholic beliefs and values are under fire in the United States. And few Catholics in public life have both seen this reality, and pushed back with grace, tenacity and effectiveness like Representative Chris Smith.

He has been a champion for the right-to-life movement, and spearheaded legislation for human rights in the United States and worldwide.

This evening offers our chapter members a unique opportunity to have private time and discussion with one of the great Catholic political leaders of our time. Congressman Smith will offer opening remarks, but much of our time will be for questions and answers.

BISHOP JOSEPH COFFEYMarch 11

Catholics in the Military

There are just under 3,000 Catholic dioceses around the world, but only a few that span almost the whole world. The Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) is one of those dioceses.

First established by Pope John Paul II, the AMS is responsible for the pastoral and spiritual care of more than 1.8 million men, women and children in 20 countries, and of patients in 153 VA Medical Centers. The bishops, priests and laity who serve in this field can bear witness to both its great challenges, as well its blessings.

Philadelphia’s own Bishop Joseph Coffey was ordained in 2019 to serve this important and challenging ministry. Bishop Joe will visit with us to explain his role as a Catholic military chaplain and auxiliary bishop, including sharing some of his challenging experiences and blessings over his 19 years of active duty.

Bishop Joseph L. Coffey graduated from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in 1996. He earned a master’s degree in Moral Theology in 2000, and a Master of Divinity degree. Prior to entering seminary, he graduated from La Salle University in 1982. He was given permission by Cardinal Bevilacqua for full-time active duty as a Navy chaplain in September of 2001. His assignments have included deployments in the Arabian Gulf and Afghanistan. He has received multiple military awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. He was ordained an auxiliary bishop in 2019, and his particular focus will include Veterans Affairs.

BILL MUMMAApril 7

The current religious liberty crisis is a direct consequence of 50 years of bad precedents set by the highest courts in the U.S. Despite popular belief, the Supreme Court has been the primary engine in the coarsening and disintegration of our culture. Catholics are in a great struggle in these beginning decades of the 21st century. There is good news happening, though. In the past three years, a substantial change in the judiciary has taken place, and it has culture-changing ramifications for decades to come. Even still, a battle rages and lines are being drawn. And the Catholic Church finds itself in the center of this conflict.

Bill Mumma is CEO and chairman of the board for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. He ended a 30-year career on Wall Street as CEO of Mitsubishi UFJ Securities (USA), with prior executive roles at Nomura Securities International and the Bankers Trust Company. Mr. Mumma is also currently serving as the Board Chair for FOCUS (The Fellowship of Catholic University Students). He has degrees from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and an MBA from Columbia University Business School. Mr. Mumma and his wife Kathy have six children and twelve grandchildren.

Your Faith, Work and the Family: Successes and Challenges

Some of us are doing fabulously when it comes to the raising of our families, but are struggling with a key area of our work lives.

Others are thriving at work, but our faith is at a crossroads. And still others are succeeding (or failing) at all three.

This night will be a night wherein we discuss the successes and challenges we are facing—in areas big and small. Our discussions will give us a chance to share our thoughts and hear the wisdom of fellow chapter members.

What Happens Now? Reinvent Yourself as a Leader Before Your Business Outruns You

Location: Aronimink Golf Club

JOHN HILLENJune 9

Few leaders will admit it, but time and again the growth of their organizations outruns their skills. The same approaches and capabilities that once helped them succeed in their careers no longer apply as organizations grow…and the challenges get more sophisticated.

Ironically, their successful behavior from the past prevents them from growing their business further.

In a presentation based on his recent book, What Happens Now?, Legatus member and leadership expert Dr. John Hillen will lay out for you ways to identify and assess seven common issues that leaders will almost certainly face in their career—and will offer you pragmatic solutions to conquer this unfamiliar territory.

The Honorable John Hillen is the CEO of EverWatch Solutions, a 400-employee defense technology firm in Northern Virginia. He is a former assistant secretary of State, a decorated combat veteran, the longtime executive chairman of National Review magazine, and author of several books. He has spent the past five years as a professor in the Business School at George Mason University. John graduated from Duke University, holds a master’s degree from King’s College London, a doctorate from Oxford, and received his MBA from the Johnson School of Management at Cornell. He lives in Oakton with his wife Maria and three teenagers.

JENNY HUBBARDJuly 14

God’s Healing Presence and Faithfulness at Sandy Hook

In the searing numbness of life’s trials is where God’s powerful and loving presence offers a strong and gentle hand and that invites one into a sacred space of recovery and conversion. While initially daunting, dark and barely alive, this space can become beautiful, quiet, and calm—a paradox that can ultimately bring healing.

Pain and trials afford one an opportunity to stand in confidence, eye to eye, with what is most terrifying and lay claim to the protection, provision and love of our Heavenly Father.

Jenny will share her personal journey towards God’s healing presence after the death of her daughter in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting.

Jennifer’s youngest child, Catherine Violet, was a victim of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Jennifer and her husband, Matthew, established the Catherine Violet Hubbard Foundation® in their daughter’s memory. The foundation is currently building the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary® in Newtown, CT. Jennifer serves as chair and president of the sanctuary, is a monthly contributor to Magnificat magazine, and a recipient of the 2014 and 2015 Catholic Press award. She resides in Sandy Hook with her husband and son, Frederick.

Ethics of Entrepreneurship

Location: Philadelphia Country Club

ANDREAS WIDMERAugust 11

Andreas Widmer is the director of the Ciocca Center for Principled Entrepreneurship at The Catholic University of America’s Busch School of Business. Previously he co-founded The SEVEN Fund, a philanthropic organization promoting enterprise solutions to poverty. He also served as CEO of the business strategy firm, OTF Group. A former Swiss Guard who protected Pope John Paul II, Andreas is the author of The Pope & the CEO: Pope Saint John Paul II’s Lessons to a Young Swiss Guard. He holds two business degrees earned in his native Switzerland, a B.S. in International Business from Merrimack College, and an M.A. in Ministry from St. John’s Seminary in Boston. He and his wife have one son.

Entrepreneurs play a particular and signficant role in the world. They not only provide the spark that ignites the economic engine, but they foreshadow, in a sense, the very creative action of God.

But as with any human function, the entrepreneur must carry out his or her mission with integrity and pursue holiness in this state of life.

In light of the growing conversations about the perceived merits of socialism, this talk is particularly important. Among other things, our speaker will discuss the essential notion of “reward” in business.

THREE PHILADELPHIA LEGATUS MEMBERS PRESENTINGSeptember 15

Three Essential Virtues for a Catholic Business Leader

Following a survey of our Philadelphia chapter membership which provided a list of more than 50 virtues, we will reveal which virtues got the most votes from chapter members and also hear from three chapter members who will share, in short presentations, the top three choices.

We will then have a combination of large and small group discussions where we’ll discuss both the survey results and the presentations from our three members on the three key virtues.

Tackling Life: How Faith, Family, Friends and Fortitude Kept an NFL Linebacker in the Game

Location: Overbrook Golf Club

KEVIN REILLYOctober 13

Kevin is an acclaimed inspirational speaker, author, former broadcaster for the Philadelphia Eagles Network, and former professional football player for the Eagles and the New England Patriots. He has motivated thousands with his journey of overcoming unbelievable obstacles. In 1976, Kevin was diagnosed with a rare tumor that led to the amputation of his left arm, ending his lifelong dream and forcing a new future, one with challenges he never could have imagined. Through perseverance and strength, Kevin achieved accomplishments many thought impossible, seeing success in the corporate world and the broadcasting world.

Tenui nec dimittam is Latin for "I have taken hold and will not let go," or simply speaking, "Never ever give up!"

This Salesianum School motto would prove to be Kevin Reilly’s life-long mantra that delivered him from a near-death experience that resulted in the loss of his left arm, shoulder and four ribs, a heart-breaking divorce and alcoholism, among many other challenges in life.

A former Philadelphia Eagle, Reilly speaks on the nature of human resilience, the importance of positivity, and the power of perseverance. He explains that we cannot always choose what happens to us, but we can choose to tackle these challenges, each and every day.

FATHER JOHN RICCARDONovember 10

The Amazingly Clever Strategy of God

Father John Riccardo is a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit. He was ordained in 1996, and he currently serves as pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Plymouth, Michigan. He is passionate about priestly and parish renewal, as well as helping people better understand a biblical vision for life and how to live with unshakeable hope. Father John’s radio program, Christ is the Answer, is heard each week on both Ave Maria Radio and EWTN Radio. He has a unique perspective of growing up in a home where “faith and business” were uniquely intertwined, as his father served as president and later as CEO of the Chrysler Corporation during the 1970s.

God is a God of order, not chaos. God is also a God of love and abundance. As we read in the book of Romans, “God wants all to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Tim 2:4).

In this sober and engaging talk, Father Riccardo takes us back-to-the-basics as he shares with us the simple and clear message of Christianity— the basic story of salvation. He’ll unpack why “anything in creation exists at all,” including humanity itself, when God is perfectly content in his self-sufficiency. Father Riccardo will speak of what “went wrong” in man’s rebellion against God in the beginning of time, and will explain God’s extraordinary response to sin in his instigation of forgiveness and love.

This talk offers you a lens through which you can see reality and shows us how we can live our lives with unshakeable confidence in the God who is all powerful and loving beyond telling.

Legatus is an organization of practicing Catholic lay women

and men from the business and professional community. Legatus

membership is comprised of CEOs, presidents, managing partners,

and business owners who, with their spouses, meet on a monthly

basis to strengthen their faith. Legatus was founded in 1987

and has provided a rich environment for members to become

“ambassadors” (legates) for the Catholic faith. Philadelphia is

blessed to have its own chapter and has a strong membership base

from all areas in the Philadelphia region.

During the monthly dinners, members listen to lively and engaging

speakers on a variety of topics relevant to faith, family, and business.

Legatus members also have access to “Legatus Forums,” which are

private business peer groups (similar to Vistage and YPO), where

members can benefit from the wisdom of other business owners.

To learn more about joining the Philadelphia Chapter of Legatus, call our Membership Chairperson,

Theresa Murtagh, at 610-496-7390, or email [email protected].
