Delivers, at arated speed of 2,100 rpm, net powerof 173 kW (232 hp) and meets theU.S. Environmental Protection AgencyTier 3 emissions regulations andStage IIIA EU Emissions Directive97/68/EC. With high horsepower andlow displacement, this innovative engineprovides excellent fuel economy anddurability which can significantlyreduce operating costs.

Torque Rise. Is increased as a result ofthe electronically controlled, computer-actuated unit injection fuel system thatprovides high injection pressure andmore precisely controlled fuel deliveryas the engine lugs back from rated speed.

ADEM™ IV Fuel System. Is a Caterpillar®

electronic control module which providesimproved engine response, performance,fuel efficiency, troubleshootingdiagnostics and reduced emissions.It allows integration with the electronictransmission control for maximumpower train efficiency.

Turbocharger. Packs more dense airinto the cylinders for more completecombustion and lower emissions,improving performance and engineefficiency. These benefits are especiallyuseful at high altitudes.

Air-to-Air Aftercooler. Reduces smokeand emissions by providing coolerinlet air for more efficient combustion.This also extends the life of the pistonrings and bore.

Dual Cooling Jets. In the block sprayoil on the piston skirt and cylinderbores keep ring temperatures low forlong ring and liner life with excellentoil control.

Pistons. Are two piece articulated-typewith forged steel crowns for excellentstrength and aluminum skirts forreduced weight. The pistons are oilcooled for increased heat dissipationand longer life.

Valves. Four per cylinder allow forgood air flow, enhancing fuel efficiencyand heat rejection. Valves and unitinjection system are camshaft-actuatedfor precise timing.

Power Train

Crankshaft. Is steel-forged, carburizedand induction-hardened for long-termdurability. It is dynamically balancedfor smooth operation. The crankshaftis completely regrindable, and theconnecting rods can be removedthrough the tops of the cylinders foreasy servicing.

Cat Engine Oil. Is formulated to optimizeengine life and performance and isstrongly recommended for use inCat diesel engines. Engine oil changeinterval is 500 hours.

Cat Remanufactured Parts. Are available,along with dealer proposed repair options,which increase machine availability andreduce total repair costs.

Cat Planetary Powershift Transmission.Features heavy-duty components tohandle tough jobs. The 345.4 mm(13.6 in) planet drives operate in allgears, forward and reverse. The additionof Electronic Clutch Pressure Control(ECPC) contributes to improved shiftquality, reduced torque spikes andoverall transmission durability.

Heavy-Duty Axles and Brakes.Are designed to last in all kinds ofoperating conditions. Two front axledisc brakes provide improved brakingcapability and better heat dissipation.Planetary final drives use free-floating,bronze sleeve bearings in the planet gears.

• Oil disc brakes are adjustment-freeand fully enclosed to lock outcontaminants.

Front Axle. Is rigidly mounted to theframe to support the weight of thecompactor, internal torque loadsand external loads applied duringcompacting and dozing operations.

Rear Axle. Includes a trunnion,two trunnion supports and associatedbearings, allowing it to oscillate plusor minus 12 degrees.

Four Piece Axle. Contains two axleshaft housings – the center housing andthe intermediate housing. Features andbenefits of this design include:

• Inboard brakes on the front axle onlyare positioned immediately adjacentto the differential and operate onthe low torque side of the final drive,requiring less braking to stop themachine.

Structure Construction. Combines the useof robotic welding on up to 90 percentof the 815F Series 2 with castings inseveral areas to increase strength byhelping spread the loads and reducethe number of parts. This provideshighly consistent welds with deep platepenetration and excellent plate fusion.The benefits are increased durabilityand fatigue strength. The computercontrolled machining ensures thealignment of pin bore, axle pad,cab mount and transmission/enginecomponents.

Box Section Engine Frame. Designed toresist twisting and torsional forces, thebox section engine end frame providesa solid foundation for the axles, engineand transmission.

Front Frame. With two plates providesmaximum structural strength duringcompaction and dozing applications.

Spread Hitch Design. Improves loaddistribution by reducing loads to thehitch bearings. The large center hitchdesign improves hydraulic line routingand makes service access easier.

Upper and Lower Hitch Pins.Pivot on double-tapered roller bearings.Box-style sections in the hitch pins andcrossmember assembly improve framestructure strength. Increased diameterlower hitch pins add to the robust design.

Engine and Transmission Mounts.With rubber isolation mount designreduces noise and vibration.

StructuresEnhanced design and materials provide superior strength to the purpose built structuresof the 815F Series 2.

Wheel Design. Gives the operator four-wheel width coverage in just two passeswith front and rear wheel tracking thateliminates gaps and overlaps.

Chevron Tamping Wheel Tip Design.Is used for equal compaction in forwardor reverse. Tips are full perimeter andare replaceable. The tip is welded to abase assembly, which is then weldeddirectly to the drum. There are 12 tipsper row and 60 tips per wheel forexcellent compaction.

Symmetrical Tamping Wheel TipPattern. Has a modified chevron tampingwheel tip design to provide greaterground pressure, more compaction,a smooth ride and excellent traction.Tip height is 190 mm (7.5 in) andwidth is 168 mm (6.6 in).

Cleaner Bars. Help keep the drums freeof carry-over dirt regardless of rollingdirection. A pass-through bolt designallows for easier serviceability.

Adjustable Cleaner Bar Tip.Are constructed from cutting edge steelthat is heat treated and direct hardened,which increases the wear life andtranslates into lower operating costs.

Compaction. Is achieved from the bottomof the lift to the top. The tapered pads walkout of the lift without “fluffing” the soil.The top of the lift is compacted and thesurface is relatively smooth and sealedso hauling units are able to maintain ahigh speed when traveling over the fill.815F Series 2 travel speed allows forfour forces of compaction: pressure,manipulation, impact and vibration.Since it can also spread fill, the numberof spreader tractors may be able tobe reduced.

1 Exceptional All-Around Viewing Area.Reduces strain and fatigue, makingoperators more productive.

2 Caterpillar ® Monitoring System.With electronic analog gauges is ahighly effective and reliable warningand diagnostic system.

As a warning system, it constantlychecks machine functions and tellsthe operator when there is a problem.Easy-to-read gauges display fuel level,temperatures for engine coolant,transmission and hydraulic oil, enginerpm and gear range. Hour meter,odometer and analog tachometerreadings are also displayed.

As a diagnostic system, it identifiesconditions, shows current readings andplays back maximum or highest readingsregistered during recent operations.

The right side panel contains a threelevel warning system, providingfull-time monitoring of key functions.The system alerts the operator ofimmediate or impending problems withair inlet temperature, brake oil pressure,electrical system, low voltage, engineoil pressure, engine over-speed, fuelfilter status, parking brake status,steering oil pressure and transmissionfilter status.

3 Quick Gear Kick Up/Down Button.Allows the operator easily downshiftor upshift to a different gear. It is aconvenient way to shift that saves timeand effort.

4 Ignition Key Start/Stop Switch.Is positioned for easy machine startingand stopping.

5 12-Volt Power Supply and ElectronicTechnician (Cat ET) Diagnostics.Is provided inside the cab for poweringradios, telephones or a laptop computer.This is particularly useful for poweringa laptop running Cat ET to access theenhanced engine and transmissioncontrol system diagnostics.

6 Steering Column. Adjusts to multiplepositions. The leather-like steeringwheel and transmission controlprovide a sure grip and comfortablefeel. The horn is conveniently locatedin the center of the steering wheel.

7 Pilot-Operated Blade Controls.Are conveniently located and allowfor precise blade movement.

8 Operator Seat. Is designed for comfortand support. Seat cushions reducepressure on the lower back and thighswhile allowing unrestricted arm andleg movement.

• A fully adjustable air suspensionseat with self-contained compressoris available as an option.

9 Built-In Storage Space. Is designedto hold cups, lunch box, insulated bottleand personal items.

10 Repositioned Vents. Throughoutthe cab keep fresh air flowing whileimproving the cab’s heating, cooling,defrost and defog capability.

11 Throttle Lock. Allows an operatorto set the engine speed and remove hisfoot from the governor (accelerator)pedal much like cruise control on anautomobile. Using this feature increasesproductivity, fuel efficiency andimproves operator comfort.

12 Decelerator Pedal. On the left acts asboth an engine decelerator and a brakethat overrides the engine speed selectedby the throttle lock. This enables theoperator to slow down when throttlelock is engaged and to return to throttlelock without pressing a button. It aidsin maneuvering around scrapers, haultrucks, tractors or any other obstacle.

13 Windshield Washers/Wipers.With in-the-blade washer deliverysystem are standard features on frontand rear windows. The front wiper hasintermittent speed capability.

14 Rear Vision Camera Monitor.Connected to a camera mounted onthe radiator guard, this monitor allowsthe operator to see the area behindthe machine.

Blade Package. Consists of the blade,push-arms, trunnion mounting, dozer-length skid plate with replaceable wearplates, reversible cutting edges, self-sharpening end bits, hydraulic linesguard and hydraulic lift cylinders.

Operator Controls. The tilt cylinder is anoption that gives the 815F Series 2 moreversatility when dozing. The controlsare seat-mounted and located in aconvenient location to the right ofthe operator.

Outside Mounted Straight Blade.With multiple box section constructionincludes a heat treated moldboard andDH-2™ steel cutting edges and end bitsfor long life. The outside mounting is astronger design because stresses are puton the frame rather than the blade soblade flexing is reduced. It also allowsfor higher lift and a wider blade can beused than with an inside mounted design.

Applications. The 815F Series 2 excelsat compacting, spreading fill, backfillingand boosting scrapers. With the ability towork at higher speeds over other typesof soil compactors, the 815F Series 2can keep up with a fast-moving scraperfleet or an articulated truck haulingoperation. When speed and dozingcapability are required job duties fora soil compactor, the 815F Series 2has no equal.

BladeMultiple box-section construction with heat-treated moldboard and DH-2 steel cutting edgesand end bits contribute to long blade life.

Rear Vision Camera. Uses a cameramounted on the radiator guard anda monitor in the cab to allow theoperator to see the area directlybehind the machine.

Air Suspension Seat. Provides addedcomfort for the operator so productivitystays high.

Air Conditioner. Uses blended air andR134a refrigerant for immediatetemperature changes.

Radios. Several radio options areavailable factory installed: AM/FM CDor AM/FM CD with satellite radio(a service contract is required froma satellite radio provider).

Product Link. Allows the customerand/or dealer to monitor the machinefrom a remote location.

Rear No-SPIN Differential. Replaces therear standard differential. It deliversmaximum traction in low traction orinconsistent ground conditions.

Fast Fill Adapter. Used during peakperiods when high production is neededand little down time can be afforded forfueling. Fuel is pumped into the tankthrough a filling nozzle at rates up to378.5 liters (100 gallons) per minute.As fuel enters the tank, air is forcedout through an open vent. When thetank is full, the vent closes and thefilling nozzle automatically shuts off.

High Speed Oil Change. Uses anevacuation system to speed up theengine oil change which helps toreduce the service time.

Turbine Pre-Cleaner Group. Replacesthe standard stratatube air cleaner witha turbine-style air intake cleaner whichis useful in dry, dusty work conditions.

Heavy Duty Cleaner Bar Tips. The shapeof these tips enables them to penetrate thewheel more efficiently than the standardcleaner bar tips, thereby reducingwheel drag and improving machineperformance. Constructed from cuttingedge steel used for blades and buckets,this high alloy steel is heat treated anddirect hardened, which increases tipwear life by up to 240 percent overother designs in sticky, abrasive soilapplications.

High Intensity Discharge (HID) Lights.Adds four lights on the cab and two onthe radiator guard to brighten up thework area. HID lights are two timesbrighter than the standard halogen lights.

Hinged Hydraulic Oil Cooler. Can beswung open without special tools.

Hinged Air Conditioning Condenser.Swings open and coupled with theswing out oil cooler allows the coolingsystem to be cleaned quickly and easily.

Operator Station. Can be removed orreplaced in about 45 minutes withouthaving to disconnect hydraulic lines.Quick disconnect couplings allow fastdisconnect of the air conditioning unitwithout releasing refrigerant.

Engine Shutdown Switch. Is locatedinside the left engine enclosure panelfor simple access and extendedswitch life.

Battery Box. Is located in the right sidebumper for convenient access to themaintenance-free batteries.

Tool Box. Is located in the left sidebumper for additional protectionagainst harsh work environments.

In-Cab Blade-Style Fuses. Are newto the 815F Series 2 to improve fuseserviceability and reliability.
