Power Train
Crankshaft. Is steel-forged, carburizedand induction-hardened for long-termdurability. It is dynamically balancedfor smooth operation. The crankshaftis completely regrindable, and theconnecting rods can be removedthrough the tops of the cylindersfor easy servicing.
Caterpillar Engine Oil. Is formulated tooptimize engine life and performanceand is strongly recommended for use inCat diesel engines. Engine oil changeinterval is increased to 500 hours.
Cat Remanufactured Parts. Are available,along with dealer proposed repair options,which increase machine availability andreduce total repair costs.
Caterpillar Planetary PowershiftTransmission. Features heavy-dutycomponents to handle tough jobs.The 345.4 mm (13.6 in) planet drivesoperate in all gears, forward and reverse.The addition of Electronic ClutchPressure Control (ECPC) contributesto improved shift quality, reducedtorque spikes and overall transmissiondurability.
Heavy-Duty Axles and Brakes. Aredesigned to last in all kinds of operatingconditions. Two front axle disc brakesprovide improved braking capabilityand better heat dissipation. Planetaryfinal drives use free-floating, bronzesleeve bearings in the planet gears.
• Oil disc brakes are adjustmentfree and fully enclosed to lockout contaminants.
Front Axle. Is rigidly mounted to theframe to support the weight of thecompactor, internal torque loadsand external loads applied duringcompacting and dozing operations.
Rear Axle. Includes a trunnion, twotrunnion supports and associatedbearings, allowing it to oscillateplus or minus 12 degrees.
Four Piece Axle. Contains two axleshaft housings – the center housing andthe intermediate housing. Features andbenefits of this design include:
• Inboard brakes on the front axle onlyare positioned immediately adjacentto the differential and operate on thelow torque side of the final drive,requiring less braking to stop themachine.

Operator Station and Controls
1 Exceptional All-Around Viewing Area.Reduces strain and fatigue, makingoperators more productive.
2 Caterpillar Monitoring System.With electronic analog gauges is ahighly effective and reliable warningand diagnostic system.
As a warning system, it constantlychecks machine functions and tellsthe operator when there is a problem.Easy-to-read gauges display fuel level,temperatures for engine coolant,transmission and hydraulic oil, enginerpm and gear range. Hour meter,odometer and analog tachometerreadings are also displayed.
As a diagnostic system, it identifiesconditions, shows current readings andplays back maximum or highest readingsregistered during recent operations.
The right side panel contains a threelevel warning system, providing full-time monitoring of key functions. Thesystem alerts the operator of immediateor impending problems with air inlettemperature, brake oil pressure,electrical system, low voltage, engineoil pressure, engine over-speed, fuelfilter status, parking brake status,steering oil pressure and transmissionfilter status.
3 Quick Gear Kick Up/Down Button.Lets the operator easily downshiftor upshift to a different gear. It is aconvenient way to shift that savestime and effort.
4 Ignition Key Start/Stop Switch.Is positioned for easy machine startingand stopping.
5 12-Volt Power Supply and CatElectronic Technician (ET) Diagnostics.Is provided inside the cab for poweringradios, telephones or a laptop computer.This is particularly useful for poweringa laptop running Cat ET to access theenhanced engine and transmissioncontrol system diagnostics.
6 Steering Column. Adjusts to multiplepositions. The leather-like steering wheeland transmission control provide a suregrip and comfortable feel. The horn isconveniently located in the center ofthe steering wheel.
7 Pilot-Operated Blade Controls.Are conveniently located and allowfor precise blade movement.
8 Contour Seat. Is designed for comfortand support. Seat cushions reducepressure on the lower back and thighswhile allowing unrestricted arm andleg movement.
• A fully adjustable air suspension seatwith self-contained compressor isavailable as an option.
9 Built-In Storage Space. Is designedto hold cups, lunch box, insulated bottleand personal items.
10 Air Vents. Throughout the cab keepfresh air flowing while improving thecab’s heating, cooling, defrost anddefog capability.
11 Throttle Lock. Allows and operatorto set the engine speed and remove hisfoot from the governor (accelerator)pedal much like cruise control on anautomobile. Using this feature increasesproductivity, fuel efficiency and improvesoperator comfort.
12 Decelerator Pedal. On the left acts asboth an engine decelerator and a brakethat overrides the engine speed selectedby the throttle lock. This enables theoperator to slow down when throttlelock is engaged and to return to throttlelock without pressing a button. It aidsin maneuvering around scrapers, haultrucks, tractors or any other obstacle.
13 Windshield Washers/Wipers. Within-the-blade washer delivery systemare standard features on front and rearwindows. The front wiper has intermittentspeed capability.

Wheel Design. Gives the operator four-wheel width coverage in just two passeswith front and rear wheel tracking thateliminates gaps and overlaps.
Chevron Tamping Wheel Tip Design.Is used for equal compaction in forwardor reverse. Tips are full perimeter andare replaceable. The tip is welded to abase assembly, which is then weldeddirectly to the drum. There are 12 tipsper row and 60 tips per wheel forexcellent compaction.
Symmetrical Tamping Wheel Tip Pattern.The modified chevron tamping wheeltip design provides greater groundpressure, more compaction, a smoothride and excellent traction. Tip height is190 mm (7.5 in) and width is 168 mm(6.6 in).

Tamping Wheels and Tips
Cleaner Bars. Help keep the drums freeof carry-over dirt regardless of rollingdirection. A new pass-through boltdesign allows for easier serviceability.
Adjustable Cleaner Bar Tips. Areconstructed from a ductile iron castingwhich provides excellent durability andwear life.
Compaction. Is achieved from thebottom of the lift to the top. The taperedtips walk out of the lift without “fluffing”the soil. The top of the lift is compactedand the surface is relatively smooth andsealed so hauling units are able tomaintain a high speed when travelingover the fill. 815F travel speed allowsfor four forces of compaction: pressure,manipulation, impact and vibration.Since it can also spread fill, the numberof spreader tractors may be able tobe reduced.

Blade Package. Consists of the blade,push-arms, trunnion mounting, dozer-length skid plate with replaceable wearplates, reversible cutting edges, self-sharpening end bits, hydraulic linesguard and hydraulic lift cylinders.
Operator Controls. Lift and tilt areboth standard options, and the controlsare seat-mounted and located in aconvenient location to the right ofthe operator.
Outside Mounted S-Blade. With multiplebox section construction including heattreated moldboard and DH-2 steel cuttingedges and end bits for long life. Theoutside mounting is a stronger designbecause stresses are put on the framerather than the blade so blade flexingis reduced. It also allows for higher liftand a wider blade can be used than withan inside mounted design.
Applications. The 815F excels atproduction dozing, spreading fill,backfilling, stockpiling, boostingscrapers and compacting. With theability to work at higher speeds overother types of soil compactors, the 815Fcan keep up with a fast-moving scraperfleet or an articulated truck haulingoperation. When speed and dozingcapability are required duties for asoil compactor, the 815F is at thetop of its class.

Blade

Air Suspension Seat. Provides addedcomfort for the operator so productivitystays high.
Air Conditioner. Uses blended airand R134a refrigerant for immediatetemperature changes.
Rear No-SPIN Differential. Replacesthe rear standard differential. It deliversmaximum performance in low tractionor inconsistent ground conditions.
Fast Fill Adapter. Used during peakperiods when high production is neededand little down time can be afforded forfueling. Fuel is pumped into the tankthrough a filling nozzle at rates up to378.5 liters (100 gallons) per minute.As fuel enters the tank, air is forcedout through an open vent. When thetank is full, the vent closes and thefilling nozzle automatically shuts off.
Heavy Duty Cleaner Bar Tips. The shapeof these tips enables them to penetratethe wheel more efficiently than thestandard cleaner bar tips, thereby reducingwheel drag and improving machineperformance. Constructed from cuttingedge steel used for blades and buckets,this high alloy steel is heat treated anddirect hardened, which increases tipwear life by up to 240 percent overother designs in sticky, abrasive soilapplications.

500 Hour Oil Change Interval. Increasesuptime and production by doubling thetime between oil and filter changes.
Engine Access. All metal engineenclosure and hinged access doorsallow for easy daily maintenanceand inspection.
Left Side Service Access. Providesconvenient entry to the engine oil filter,grease points (lower), air filter (front),power train oil dipstick (top), coolantsight gauge (top), power train oil fill(below cab), power train oil filter andhigh speed engine oil fill.
Right Side Service Access. Featuresthat are easily reached under the hoodinclude fuel filter and water separator,fuel primer and engine oil dipstick.

Hinged Hydraulic Oil Cooler. Canbe swung open 70 degrees withoutspecial tools.
Hinged Air Conditioning Condenser.Swings open 120 degrees and coupledwith the swing out oil cooler, allows thecooling system to be cleaned quicklyand easily.
Operator Station. Can be removed orreplaced in about 45 minutes withouthaving to disconnect hydraulic lines.Quick disconnect couplings allow fastdisconnect of the air conditioning unitwithout releasing refrigerant.
Engine Shutdown Switch. Is locatedinside the left engine enclosure panel forsimple access and extended switch life.
Battery Box. Is located in the rightside bumper for convenient accessto the maintenance-free batteries.
Tool Box. Is located in the left sidebumper for additional protectionagainst harsh work environments.
